Nike's bag alone will not build the juggernaut, players have to want to play for you too. Many younger players become less hungry getting a lump sum of money early but we will see if it works.

The tip of the spear was Mike Bellotti. Oregon was a door mat in the 80’s. Rich Brooks hired MB as his OC in the late 80’s, and they immediately improved. Mike took Oregon to heights never seen before. Finishing # 7 in 2000, and finishing #2 in 2001. It was his success at the end of the 90’s that peaked Phil Knights interest. That’s when Knight started investing heavily into the Ducks. Point is, that would’ve never happened if it wasn’t for Bellotti. What we see today all started in 1988/89 with the hire of MB… Another thing to consider, he was offered higher profile jobs while he was at Oregon, but he always turned them down. Ohio St came calling and he said no. His love for Oregon was unwavering, and it’s looking like we are seeing this same scenario play out again with Dan Lanning. Will we see another MB in Lanning and have a coach stay for over 20 + years?
It’s looking like that could be a huge possibility.

    • @3rdandlong

@@jimedick9496 Yeah, I don't want to see Oregon as a "hang-out spot" or as you say "door-mat" to the next career move. In the 80's, you look at high profile people like Belotti and sense they are sincere and committed. I met Mike at the old G-Willkers on Coburg Rd, and got to shake his hand. He came across as sincere and wanted the team to make it to Championship game. Don't ask me what I thought of Taggart. He was not sincere. This school should not be used as a learning facility for your next career move. But I sense Dan is going to win more than 1 Championship for Oregon. I just feel it in the Force LOL.

Bellotti was a special coach. Oregon owes it all to that man. Another thing to consider, he was able to keep the huge majority of his Assistant coaches sitting his tenure. That’s unheard of these days.
Lanning just has the “It” about him. There’s a reason why the greatest coach wanted to promote him as his DC while he was at Alabama. Only to have Kirby Smart sneak in and grab out from underneath Saban. Having those two coaches think that highly of such a young coach, is all a person needs to know about Lanning. He’s special, and I agree with your statement. I think he’ll bring multiple championships to Oregon before he’s done.
There is one team that still scares me, and it’s not a college team. It’s the Kansas City Chiefs. That’s his dream job, and if they came calling, I don’t think he’d turn that down.

So OSU is my new adopted fav team to go along with Utah. We had some great matchups over the years with the Utes, and their fan base is terrific. They have very classy fans. Before and after games, win or lose, they always showed respect and extended well wishes…. Since rumors of Oregon first started circulating about joining the B1G, the huge majority of OSU fans have been very supportive of the idea. Once it was official, I’ve seen so many of their fans welcoming us Duck fans. I hope OSU and UO fans continue that class of showmanship towards each other for years to come, just like the relationship we have with Utah fans.

      1st down: Run it
      2nd down: Run it

I believe you’re wrong. Dan loves Oregon. He loves the program. He has already formed deep roots at Oregon. He wants to elevate Oregon to its first ever national championship while elevating himself to his first ever championship win. Doing it at Alabama only continues the trend of winning championships. It credits not him but Nick Sabin for building Bama to what it already is, a power house. He doesn’t want to try and fill the enormous shoes of Nick Sabin or stand in his enormously long shadow. Dan wants to be a first. Oregon and Dan are perfect together.

    • @jimedick9496
      @jimedick9496 4 месяца назад +1

It played a huge roll, that’s for certain. Joining the B1G moved the needle for recruiting as well. Oregon has been placing around 10 nationally, give or take a few spots. This last year they are anywhere from 4-6 pending on recruiting service. So it’s helped. Lanning stated that he’s having an easier time selling the program to the recruits since joining the league.
I’m still not sure he leaves though. The PAC was still a P5 league with a guarantee of at least 1 playoff birth. Not a bad problem to have. That’s the football aspect. His personal side seems to love it at Oregon. He has stated more than once, he wants to set his roots down and raise his children in one place. He’s not interested in moving from place to place. He wants his kids to have a stable environment and he has that at Oregon. I think that played a major roll in his decision to turn down A&M, and now Bama. Plus, he’s got everything and anything he wants or needs at Oregon.

That said, I think Oregan is going to be a team to watch for sure, but I think the real team to be keeping a close eye on are the UT Vols. You wanna talk about a trainwreck being turned into a diamond!?.... Just look at what Josh Heupel has been doing in Tennessee. That team might actually shock everyone and run away with the playoffs. He’s a terrific hire! He’s won everywhere he’s been. He’s not a good recruiter, but he’s ACC excellent X and O’s coach. With that said, I beg to differ. Lanning’s has coached and recruited in the SEC country and he excelled at it. He knows the south and he was an excellent recruiter. He helped build that Georgia defense that was an unmovable force.
DeBoer landed a gem with Penix when he transferred from Indiana. Lanning landed a great one in Bo Nix as well. Here’s the difference. Penix has a terrific long ball. Oregon DB’s are good, but not great. They are Oregons weakest group on the team. UW was a matchup problem for Oregon... When you compared both teams to common opponents, Oregon blew them out, while UW barely got off with a win. The eye test said Oregon should kill Washington. My point is, remove Nix and Penix, and replace them with a mediocre QB for both teams. Who do you think would win? Oregon
They simply have more talent and are the better team. Oregon lost to UW by a combined 6 points, yet out gained them offensively. The play of Penix was outstanding, and his play was the difference. Remove Penix, and UW is barely a .500 team. Remove Nix, and Oregon still wins 9 games, if not more. They dominated their opponents whereas UW barely beat.
Lanning knows the SEC and the offenses they run and the defensive schemes they use. DeBoer has coached the North and far west. This is very new to him, but with Lanning, he’s right at home.
Just my opinion, but I think it’s a solid one.

Dan Lanning's reputation is not as stellar as some might think. While he has his supporters, many view him as someone with character issues. His temper, nasty attitude, and harsh words towards others don't exactly endear him to everyone. It's worth noting that Nike's financial backing plays a significant role in attracting players, not Lanning himself. The money paid to Jamaree Caldwell is ridiculous. Consequently, team cohesion could become a problem. What some may interpret as passion, others see as insecurities, and there are instances of jealousy when he's not in the spotlight of college football discussions. The backlash the media received when he was on the panel of the college football, Natty says all of what people think of him. No other coach would have received that kind of backlash. He’s an a**hole. Additionally, claims that Alabama had an interest in him have raised eyebrows, too, among many, so he used that media rumor as a promotion, saying he’s staying in Oregon. I see straight through him.
