As a visual designer, I have a ton of respect for sound designers. Their work really is what makes the visuals in games and videos become real. The sound design for Hyper Light Drifter was one of the things that caught my attention immediately in the initial kickstarter trailer. Kudos Akash, I look forward to seeing what you and the rest of the Heart Machine team puts forth.
Thanks guys! The song playing during the timelapse is a piece by Disasterpiece in our current build of the game. Keep the comments coming! This all helps with future videos!
I second what was just said about showing a gif or sprite of what the sound well be used for in game. I would a also love to see a segment of the music composers putting together theme tracks, ambient bg music, etc. [Also, i think many people like me would be excited for a full length version of the announce trailer track for download] Keep up the amazing work, Team! We all have faith in you!
You sir, are the man. Thank you for all your hard work. The ambient soundtrack and sound effects are stunning. Enjoying the game so, so much. Easily 9/10
Always thrilling to see people so passionate about their jobs... thx for posting this and for the hard work on making this master piece project the best it could be! really appreciate man. ^_^
Really excited for this game and love what I've heard of the music. However, those chimes ringing off the gunshot were so cool! You shouldn't have got rid of them.
Did anyone else think the wire recorder was much smaller before Akash's hand entered the frame? I was thinking it was about bread-loaf sized. I wonder why it had to be so big? Something to do with vacuum tubes?
It is quite big! Weighs about 40 pounds as well. It actually has a handle on the side in case you need to carry it around to a jazz club or the beach. And yes, there are a bunch of tubes on the inside as well as large gears/spinning plates. The speakers themselves are also quite large!
Being a sound designer must be the most fun job. Just running around your house recording a bunch of different sounds and then compiling them to make a whole new sound.
Thanks for this little peek into sound design! Definitely looking forward to seeing more, I've always wondered how synthetic sounds are created! :) [ What's the song playing during the timelapse? Sounds like some epic sci-fi movie music... ]
Interesting. What I would like to see is: what are the basic "building blocks" of sound you actually work with?? I draw/paint sometimes, so it is very clear how colors, lines and angles have to be used... but how do you start with sound?
So awesome!!! I would love to see what sprite or animation you are using these sound effects for. Like perhaps show the sound in the game or even sync it up with a gif so we could see what you might use this sound for. I imagine you have a list of sound effects that you need to complete is it by character/weapon/level/ what is your work flow for handling the vast amount of sound effects that you need to implement? How do you keep track of it all??? Anyways, this is awesome!
hi, just discovered this game and I'm really thrilled, great sound design but the music used in the time lapse (and gameplay) is awesome! Any chance we could get it?
Quick question, curious as to why you use a stereo sound effect for something like a gunshot, is it just to add more overall beef to the sound, I suppose? I've seen a lot of pinpoint type sounds like guns and other sfx are usually always created or recorded in mono.

I would love to see a whole series of these, showing the raw sounds and the process it took for the final sound. Thanks for sharing!

That gun sound effect sounds like it could shoot out a rainbow torpedo leaving behind sparkling glitter.
Pure inspiration

Thanks for coming!!
The soundtrack on the trailer is wonderful. Please make it available on iTunes for download.
Absynth and lots of bitcrushers
Nice. Insight vids are the best. Will you guys be making more vids giving insight on design or the visual style, or just sound?
Cool video! Any chance for a "HLD full-behind-the-scene-documentation" ? :)
Wow Logic Pro really does make GarageBand look like a children's toy! :P

please, what kind of mic stand are you using? I've got a sm57 too, but no stand yet
That ended in the game, didn't it? That's the rifle sound I think.
How can I get started with learning sound design?
