Only if the Artpop era had gone the way Gaga wanted, it’d have been a total success.
The poor single choices are the label to blame. The management team is a chaos according to Gaga. Aura is supposed to be a continuation of Telephone. All of this makes Artpop the flop era which everyone like to make fun of but I am glad this era and “flop” didn’t hurt Gaga like Witness era did to Katy.

    • @popdissected4400
      @popdissected4400  5 лет назад +275

Exactly! It's a bit of a shame Katy was met with a legitimate decline in tour sales, and record / single sales with "Witness". Katy REALLY took a career beating with that record, but Gaga managed to bounce back! I definitely agree the single choices off of "ARTPOP" were mostly to blame. And this era is by NO means bad, it was such met with a lot of adversary and controversy.

I like to think there’s an alternate reality where ARTPOP turned out the way Gaga wanted it, and how it deserved to be; A visual album, with ARTPOP ACT II., single choices being the right ones(, performing in space!!), the ARTPOP app having unreleased songs on it, and it widely successful with fans AND critics.

I'd love that happening but artpop act II definitely would have contradicted the point of artpop as an album. She first wanted to make those to see the ARTpop part of the album and also the artPOP part of the album. But the whole point was to put art and pop together, not to make it 2 different albums.

I’m not trying to drag B because I love her,
But people have been so double standard for when it comes to Gaga. When B dropped beyonce album, her songs didn’t chart well and it wasn’t mainstream and it wasn’t making a huge impact as Sasha fierce or 4, but they still didn’t give her any shit.
But when gaga put out artpop, even applause was charting well, as well as do what you want and Dope, and the album reached no.1 in billboard 200 and her impact on others was huge, people still says she flopped. Even Venus was popular among listeners.
I just wish Americans would idolise gaga as much as they idolise bey because they are just as impactful and just as talented.

NOTE: I state in the video "ARTPOP" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. I did in fact mean the Billboard 200. Secondly, in the segment discussing "Applause", I portion of the video had to be removed due to a copyright claim. In that portion, I discuss how many people were pitting Lady Gaga's "Applause" against Katy Perry's "Roar", which is why I mentioned Roar's sales numbers in the video. Lastly, it's been brought to my attention a lot was left out in regards to Gaga's management specifically - as well as her hip issue. With a lot of information being left out, I may create a new video that delves into that deeper! Thank you all for understanding.

ARTPOP Is Still The Best Album Of 2013 People Still Talking About It

  • @BRIXandSTRINGS
    @BRIXandSTRINGS 4 года назад +59

You say that Joanne was her most authentic record to date but I disagree, I actually think it’s her least authentic. This album on the other hand, ARTPOP, I believe to be her most authentic record. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that she’s progressively got less and less authentic with each year that’s passed since its release to the point where I don’t even recognise her anymore.
ARTPOP practically SCREAMS Gaga. I mean it literally embodies and encapsulates her whole gig. Extroversion, boldness, electricity, pop, extravagance, vocals, visuals, art, depth Et Al. Everything since has been pretty pedestrian, by her standards, and I think I would have respected her a lot more had she continued down this artistic route even if it meant losing the GP and the major record label along the way. Sure, business wise it’s made a lot of sense for her to do Joanne and A Star Is Born and because of these things she’s genuinely thriving right now. But at what cost? Artistic integrity? She’s so obsessed with proving herself and her worth to everybody that hated her at the time that she forgot about the people who’d been there all along. The drop off with her fan base since ARTPOP and the gradual decline in engagement between one another is evident.
Maybe she just got older. Maybe her tastes changed. Maybe she feels she’s now on the right path. Maybe she’s happier now than she’s ever been. Great! I’m happy for her if that’s the case but I’m just not here for this current iteration of herself. Maybe she’ll excite me again one day. Maybe she won’t. But, irregardless, this album, ARTPOP, will always be one of my all time favourites, if not my absolute No.1 of all time. It’s just a beyond incredible pop record. It engulfs you from the get go and doesn’t ever let up. It’s like being hit by a massive gay truck that pins you to the grill by sheer gravitational force whilst it travels at 150mph down a rainbow highway with Gaga at the wheel and jets of glitter and neon light spewing out the exhausts. I will never get over this album and there’ll never be anything quite like it ever again. And for that, I’ll always be indebted to her.

For me, what I’ve noticed is that when an artist puts out a record, people compare this new record to older work so much that they start to criticise every single detail in it, as if every record should sound almost similar to previous work or should have similar sounds and production, critics and people in general don’t recognise the uniqueness of a work of art until it’s too late and the era is over.

When I grew a little (I'm 11.) and understood the music better, I listened to the album and loved it just like all of her others. I remember finding out that it was considered a "flop" and being in pure shock. Honestly 2013 was a bad year for Gaga, for reasons that aren't necessarily her fault. She broke her hip, had a psychotic break, had troubles behind the scenes, betrayal, a "flop" (not really) album, and overall she was depressed (and more). I'm so happy that she is at a better place now. :)

After watching the one on Katy's Witness era I do wish this one had also dived more into the backgrounds of what was going on with Gaga during this time such as her depression, weed addiction, undiagnosed PTSD, departure from her manager and the general mismanagement of the era (lots of unfulfilled promises) and her rebellious attitude when her label tried to put her into a box. I do feel like all of these things added to the bad reputation and/or press that happened during this era. I’ll be one to admit as a little Monster I didn’t like ARTPOP during its initial release. But looking back now i do miss it! Now I can appreciate it for what it’s worth. I think a lot of people don’t like an album during its release but when it’s all said and done and a new era is on the way they look back and think it really was an amazing album and time. I do have to say if not for the ARTPOP era she would have quit the music industry after because of all the hate towards the album (and her manager left during a one of the most Crucial times in her life when she was at an all time low) not to mention she was so tired of giving it her all and having it thrown back at her like a bone to a dog.

Dope is such an intense and solid track on this album. Too bad Red Flame didn't make the cut. It was such a good fit for this album.

Another major component you're missing which tremendously added to the undermining of ARTPOP was Madonna and Perez Hilton.
With the Madonna comparisons and the "reductive" comment, Gaga became a huge target towards backslash, she couldn't post any photo or video without anyone making some strained comparison. Madonna continued to lead the Gaga hate trend with her Express Yourself/ Born This Way/ She's Not Me diss at her MDNA tour which the media ate up. (Personally, I think Madonna shiting on Gaga was a publicity tactic to get her spotlight since she just put out MDNA. Madge has been in the industry for years and she knows how to get buzz whether it be controversial media tactics and she used Gaga because she was the "New Madonna" although she is wayyyyy much more than her)
Perez and Gaga were very close friends since '08 but it wasn't until she appeared on his 2011 reality show "Perez Hilton Super Fan" that their relationship turned sour. Gaga explained on the Howard Stern show in 2013 that he was asking super rude and personal questions about her relationship life, was being very negative about Born This Way and when Gaga got angry and emotional he told his camera crew to continue rolling while she was in tears. It wasn't until Tara Savelo stepped in and shut it down. He apologized but Gaga stopped hanging out with him and he got mad. Gaga also mentioned to Stern that she believes their falling out was rooted in Madonna (since Perez is a die hard Madonna fan). After that, Perez began to bully Gaga on his site criticizing her weight, relationships, mocking her music, fashion and fueled the Madonna comparisons even more. Oh and he started to stalk Gaga putting over 5 different offers on apartments on the same extract floor where Gaga lived with her sister and parents in NYC. (There is so much more, he is so fucking sick. the text message he sent her after her surgery?!?)
Worst of all, they got Gaga while she was down and defenseless when she broke her hip and was recovering. Fortunately, Gaga was able to persevere and managed to reinvent herself with Tony Bennett, ignore critics/tabloid gossip and she's been going up ever since. Those years as a little monster were exhausting (iykyk) but I'm happy she's happy now

Ans this doesn’t even dip into all of the personal struggles , and struggles with her label she was having at the time. She had such a huge vision for artpop, and it truly could’ve been something groundbreaking. I guess it’s just one of those “wrong place at the wrong time” situations #JusticeForARTPOP

Good video 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 tbh I appreciate the fact that she tries different things and new sounds but unfortunately this era was definitely bizzare and most of the songs didn’t really stick with most people

I LOOOOOVED ARTPOP I think this era was messy due to her lack of creative control she had and many unexpected moments. I literally heard ARTPOP again Monday after not hearing it for a while and it’s still ahead of its time. The only song I don’t like really is Jewels and Drugs but other than that there’s no skips

this is a great video, you did a good job at staying neutral with explaining the albums performance however you did miss out a decent amount of details that, if you're not a big follower of gaga then i don't blame you for not knowing, also contributed to chaos of ARTPOP but as i said, this a really well done video :)
TL;DR - i wrote a little essay about the doom of ARTPOP which was way more than just underperforming singles and complicated concepts. a lot of built of tension finally exploded and the effects were spread all over ARTPOP starting from before the album was even announced. most of it can't be confirmed either due to legal reasons or because everyone just wants to move on but essentially it ranged from the media to the toxic fans to those she considered family all coming together at the worst time possible which gaga tended to stay silent about (and has rarely opened up since, one instance being her Zane interview in 2016 where she discusses addiction, PTSD and mental illness during this time). full essay below:
    1) Her ex-manager Troy Carter: We don't know the whole story since gaga is not legally allowed to discuss it (so it must be awful...) but we do know is that they clearly had huge tension between them dating back to her hip injury. She was due to start ARTPOP right after the BTWB ended in the first half of 2013 however she had to cancel the rest of the tour due to serious hip injury that required surgery and months of recovery aka the infamous blackout. There's heavy speculation that Troy urged her back on her feet as soon as she possibly could to begin the era and I think gaga explained during that time, a lot of people she considered friends and family turned their back on her during her lowest.
Another sign of tension between Troy and/or her label was when she leaked a demo of Aura in August 2013 herself out of frustration because she intended it to be the lead single but clearly lost the battle. In the end, this all came to a close on ARTPOP's release day when news broke that Troy and Gaga had split to which we still don't know who left who but the most gaga said is 'my partner/friend left me'. On the day she found out, she performed a very emotional version of Dope for some RUclips awards where she cried during the whole number.
    2) The label's lack of support: I'll try and keep this short after that massive Troy essay but essentially, gaga and her label have always butted heads when it came to single choices, cover art, tracklists etc. But it's clear gaga reached peak frustration when she leaked Aura (which broke the record for most searched thing on Google in 10 minutes). The singles in this era were constantly changing, starting with Venus and its confirmed video to DWUW being promoted from promo single to official single, Applause replacing Aura as the lead and rumours of Gypsy being the 4th single but the label fully stopped supporting the album campaign before G.U.Y meaning gaga funded the whole video out of her own pocket.
    3) The app and other cancelled projects: The infamous yet precious ARTPOP app was intended to be a creative hub for everyone and gaga had big plans to release demos, stems and all sorts through the app for anybody to use and make art with. Sadly we never got past the GIF maker tool which was there upon release and when the timers for the next sections reached 0, gaga put out a vague but sad tweet telling fans not to get too excited and the app is just the beginning.
During 2012/early 2013 gaga did a LOT of hyping amongst her fans with plans to create a visual for each song on the record, tweeting all kinds of lyrics and song titles, creating a second volume of ARTPOP known as Act 2/ACT II, describing the album as The Fame Monster's techno rave sister and jokingly the "album of the millennium" so she really made it out that ARTPOP was going to have a lot to enjoy and play with. Nobody knows how or why everything changed between pre-hip accident to Applause release but fans point their fingers toward Troy and the label for trying to stay commercial instead of experimental.
    4) Her fanbase: Obviously gaga still has and even had back then a strong force of a fanbase but as soon as things turned openly sour, the entire ARTPOP era weeded out tonnes of fans who felt they couldn't stick around due to the lack of smashing chart hits. Those who turned their backs essentially added fuel to the anti-gaga media storm, using social media to voice their hate and shadey opinions just because gaga wasn't doing Born This Way numbers. This clearly hurt gaga because gaga has always gone the extra mile for her fans by using her celebrity status as a political figure, giving fans lots of chances to interact with her, allowing gifts to be thrown on stage and even bringing multiple fans onstage and backstage. Once the hateful ones got loud, she felt very betrayed and stayed very silent during the ARTPOP era, likely in fear of creating even more hate.
    5) Angela Cheng and the media: If you're a huge gaga follower then this name will make you see red. There's a lot to explain about the Angela Cheng conspiracy so BuzzFeed summed it up nicely in 2015: www.buzzfeed.com/mylestanzer/lady-gagas-biggest-haters-wont-reveal-who-they-are-or-go-awa#.pwg6VqDqb
Angela played too much of a role in media's unfair assault on gaga. Gaga really could not catch a break from comments about her weight and looks to constant slamming of ARTPOP and it's performance as if debuting at #1 was a bad thing.
So as you can see, whilst your very informative video did help explain some of the ropes that pulled ARTPOP apart, there's a tonne of extra turmoil below the surface level that only big gaga fans or pop stans know about. ARTPOP between the cracks is a hard era to discuss because it's a lot of rumours and drama that nobody really wants to confirm since it was so bad. Thanks for reading if you made it this far lol

Wow! I didn't know any of this!! Thank you so much for sharing, I might even make another video that goes more in depth on the ARTPOP era with this information. And you're right - I love Gaga but am not a huge fan, so I don't know many of the ins and out of her career. These details add so much to this era and the complications that went on during it. Thank you for taking the time to type all this out for me, it's so informative and very eye opening! Thank you for watching as well.

@@popdissected4400 Since we're on the topic, I'd just like to add that Gaga dealt with severe depression after her hip broke and throughout this era, which if I remember correctly, she didn't get therapy for yet. It also resulted in her weed addiction, which she wrote Dope about. Originally Dope was a song aimed at fans called I Wanna Be With You but since her label saw it as a great opportunity to use it for sales (I don't remember the exact wording), she replaced it with the very raw ballad that is Dope. (Howard Stern 2013)
And then there's also the undiagnosed PTSD that she dealt with at the time, that we only really learned about a few years later. If I remember correctly it was triggered around this time because her rapist tried to contact her or something along those lines (she mentioned this in a press conference about her song Til It Happens To You), which I believe prompted her to write Swine. I also believe it had something to do with the "twisted thinking" she's mentioned about believing R.Kelly and thus working with him but that is just a theory that I can not prove.
And the last thing I remember pretty vividly (I haven't rechecked it tho) is Applause actually being leaked on the same day as Roar was released, causing a surprise release, which started that whole debate in the first place.
The fact that she performed mostly demos of her songs at the iTunes Festival before the album release hints at the fact that the promotion really was very rushed at that point -> mismanagement.
In conclusion, there were so many messy things going on during this era that distracted from the album itself by causing bad press that one could probably write a whole book about it. That being said, I'm very excited to see how you will analyze these things if you do decide to make another video and again, you did and are doing a great job :)

That's so cool! I've never gotten the chance to see Gaga live, but her performances are always exceptional! And I think you're spot on, ARTPOP didn't have much 'relatibilty' to most general audiences, which may have been why some didn't like the record. Nonetheless, it's still a good record!
