  • Carbatia Ghat Bhadrak | Gandhi In Odisha | Coast Canal | Mantei River | Charibatia | Odisha History
    Hello Everyone
This video is little bit different from others..it's fully narrated with historical informations...
When I came across The Mantei River , thought to share some informations about it..If you Search Mantei River in Google Map..it is shown as Mata Dei River. It's a tributary both to The Brahmani & The Baitarani River after they joined just before Dhamara Port. It is a Tidal River..When there is high tides in Bay of Bengal there is an increased water level at River.. and interestingly water goes backward sometimes..River is connected to Bhitarakanika National
Park (indirectly through Brahmani and Baitarani) which is a home to saltwater crocodile..So there Is a greater chance of occurrence of crocodiles in Mantei..Interestingly when you cross Mantei from one end to other..you have to cross through a boat which is neither operated through a electric motor nor through propeller. It is operated by a rope which is bound at two ends.Only after seeing the video you can imagine..There is no bridge. Mahatma Gandhi ,Father of our Nation had visited this place twice and stayed here two nights during Dec 16-18 , 1927. There is a Gandhi Smruti Bhawan constructed by government here..Britishers had constructed a canal (Coast Canal ) from here i.e Charbatia Ghat to Geonkhali at the bank of Hooghly River (72 km distance from kolkata) for proper water Irrigation to land after the worst ever famine in odisha 1866 ..which is known as Na 'Anka Durbhikhya .Length of Coast canal was 221 km and approximate cost of construction was 36 lakhs at that time.It was also easier for Britishers to transport their commercial goods from Odisha to West Bengal..Coast Canal construction started in 1880-81..renovated in 1888..and finally ingurated in 1900-1901 , which is clearly mentioned on the wall of sluice gate at Ghat..Britishers had constructed their revenue office, quarters ,tax collection center for their easier communication..In which house Gandhi had stayed and the britishers offices..all are dilapidated ..only a tax collection centre you can see here..After road communication opened from Howrah to Cuttack via Balasore in 1897 , Coast Canal lost its importance and due to negligence it got silt all over..If you Search on map you can see it's presence perfectly..it would be great if there could be a bridge across Mantei River and renovation of Coast canal..one weekend visit wiil be very worthful if you come to this place..
After all thank you for reading this..hope you will enjoy the video..
