2 years later, I found the information still very relevant.
How did you know I was struggling to plot a mystery? Thank you!
I know all. But I'll leave THAT as a mystery ;)
Holy cow, you have saved my crippling Mystery Thriller plot with this! You know sometimes, when a story would have a sequel planned, maybe returning to normality won’t always be the case, and the characters world is forever changed.
Oh wow, I didn't realise this video would be so helpful. I'm glad you got so much out of it :D
I really respect the humbleness of a video like this. To me, you are a professional, and to see that your writing process is not flawless, and that you also had to pull up the structure of one of your own previous videos is very comforting as a beginner writer.
I wrote this out and then watched" Knives Out". Then using it on a mystery/psychological horror story I had developed. Very hepful Thank you
I’m a Pantser not at all an Outliner, so it’s absolutely fascinating to me when I see other writers like yourself create an outline 😂 like I’m seriously impressed😱 I tried to do that but I just can’t, for me I write ✍🏾 as I go…I know it’s strange😆 but I enjoy watching this, it really helps me compare to the mystery series I’m currently writing and there’s something very soothing and calming about this video and even hearing the birds chirping in the background. Sorry long paragraph 😆 but thank you for this!
Aw I'm really glad you enjoyed this. Loads more to come. In the next long video, I actually start plotting out my next story. I swear sometimes being a pantser writing as you do might be better in some moments, as I get so caught up in the structure I forget to actually write, haha! Thanks for watching :D
@@JoeWebb-TheStoryteller LOL! Yes you’re right, even as a Pantser myself, I guess having a little bit of both (Pantser/Outliner) can come in really handy☺️ I know sometimes I need to write a few notes/ideas/outlines from time to time, it helps and Yess I look forward to watching what you have coming up!
I've been waiting for this video! Let's go! 🤩
Hope you enjoy it :D
This was such a useful video!I was struggling so hard with my comic outline when I found this video. I scrapped that outline so quickly and started rewriting it again, using your outline example as a guide, and it's SOO much better now! Thank you so much!
Joe, this is so helpful! More than anything I’ve seen on RUclips so far in writing!
I’m trying to plot a mystery in parallel to my character’s individual stories and this was an enormous help. Looking forward to seeing more of your content 😇
Oh that's great news, I'm so glad! I look forward to putting more out! :D
you're an actual lifesaver for this, i had no clue where to start at first but now i have a solid amount of my story down!
Omg I love this. I'm glad you did it.
I find it hard to get myself in the groove of writing. But having the ability to write alongside a writer I look up to is very motivating.
I wish you the best of luck in this writing world. And I hope you have a wonderful day Joe. Stay motivated and always be positive. We love and support you.💙
Thank you so much! I hope this helps you get in the groove, let me know if it does :D
@@JoeWebb-TheStoryteller little update. I've watched it multiple times. I find it very therapeutic and relaxing to write with. Keep up the great work. I look forward to all your videos.
This was a very useful video. Hope you do more of this
I had already known about this way of plotting but still filling in the details gave me a much rounder picture of what exactly needs to happen next in my story. Now I can go ahead and outline my single chapters, Thanks!
It’s really cool being able to see both you and what you’re writing! Nice video :)
Thanks Erin! :D
Thanks. I watched through. Helpful to see!
awesome! thanks for this insight!
Omg Joe gold!!! That’s Sat night sorted!☺️
Great video! Thanks. Helped a lot!
I got to the end of the vid! thank you for your help. I barely started trying to make a story and I think mystery is very intriguing.
Hi, i was looking up about making mystery short stories and found your video. I've been playing this in the background as i take naps or short breaks from my work.
I really enjoyed this type of video and felt your presentation was satisfying, entertaining and informative, even with the many mishaps that you went through in the making of the video.
So anyways I enjoyed the behind the scenes process, and will love to see more. Enjoy the sub 👍
I didn’t write my story but I wrote notes on what you were saying (waaaay too many pages I’m sure) and in my head filled in what would go where. I’m going to go find your other videos now. This was great!
Heyo ! Thanks a lot for this video ! I'm writing a romantasy mystery and i've been struggling with the mystery part of things and how to plan out clues / the investigation, but you've helped me a lot ! im not too far off so that gives me confidence to finish the first draft and move onto revisions !
the fact that you type so fast as a coder is so fascinating and I loved your method
Thank you! This is exactly what I needed for planning my new mystery!
Also this is an excellent way to prepare for Na No Wri Mo (take out the spaces).
I’m writing my first mystery novel. I want more of these.
REALLY getting a lot out of this video. Typing along with you. Thanks!
This actually helped me a lot. I'm currently for school needing to write a short story but I'm extending it out, a lot. I was thinking of extending the page number from around 5 to about 50 maybe 100, and this should help a ton.
Love this. So helpful. I've copied it all down and now I'm going to fill in the sections with my mystery. Thanks for this video. I didn't mute you btw. 👍
I'm gonna watch this while filling in your incredibly helpful sheet :D I've been getting my plot in slightly more order just by typing it out in short, so that's great!
YOU CALL THIS MESSY? I'm just absolutely stunned how quickly you've basically written an outline, without any actual characters. I need my characters for plot, so this was very interesting...
Brill, looking forward to reading it. Also I'm glad this was helpful to you. I am overly organised, sometimes to my own detriment, haha! XD
@@JoeWebb-TheStoryteller Well.... I'll send it to you soon, I think you'll be stunned that it's the most organised it's ever been, and is still quite a mess. Have fun... XD
What an awesome video. Thanks for making it.
Aw thanks for watching it!
Thank you! Sincerely an aspiring mystery writer. 😁
Thanks for this video
I got to the end! a superb video, i learnt an awful lot. Any chance of more like this? particularly a romance one?
JOE you ROCK! Much appreciation from South Africa!
Thank you! Much love for your comment, from South Wales :D
Hey Joe can you please make a video about how to write a horror mystery novel . Also if you can highlight the mistakes that should be avoided - that would be great. Now about this video, I loved watching the raw process and felt bad at the point where the trees were cut off. More power to you🤍
You mentioned making videos about how to do comedy in story telling at one point, I look forward to those!
more of these would seem redundant, but it's a really enjoyable format 🥳🥰
bro this guy is so underrated he needs more subs ngl.
I see this very helpful and its an opportunity for me to learn mystery story writing in my summer vacation from your inspirational videos....
Also you were asking for a playlist on 3 acts....; so from my end go for it.
I'LL SURELY BE ONE OF THE VIEWER AND ALSO A SUBCRIBER NOT TO MENTION OF YOUR VIDEOS.
I actually like the way you teach...
So I recommend you to continue your video journey on this channel.
Thanks from India,
Very helpful knowledge...
:)
Thank you Time-Lapser! Looking forward to seeing more of you in the comments! :D
Tells us to ignore him.
Me: okay!
(Just kidding. I clicked on the video to listen, not to hone my selective hearing)
Note: "guidance" could also involve an opportunity to recontextualize the clues they've gathered. Perhaps why they're at a dead end is because they obsessed over one puzzle piece when they should have been studying another. Or perhaps they assumed that a puzzle piece "must" be part of the puzzle when it isn't and the real clue was overlooked at the place where the piece was found.
Oh boy 3pm 🍔
Any tips for plotting out and outlining a action adventure story?
I'll try to do a video on it at some point, or you can go through the same process I went through. Try to use the 3 act structure (I have a series on it) and plot it out yourself if you like
him and his food lol
i love this video and think a series would be great! (yes this is a year later shhhhh)
Hi Joe, I've started following your channel recently. How do you know when the number of clues is enough? Thank you :D
yes! yes! yes!
You should do something around "in media res". That'll be awesome! cheers, my friend.
This is exactly what I need. I am going to sit here with you and plot a mystery novel as well. Even if it ends up being trash, I refuse to not finish thjs
NEW SUBSCRIBER! Hi, I think you explain things well for me but this is only the second video I'm watching and I can't seem to concentrate because I keep watching you lol that sounds creepy I just mean you're cute and you have pretty eyes but anyways I look forward to watching more of your videos and learning from you.
I'm a plotter and i write too many details while plotting
I appreciate what you’re doing; it’s awesome. Maybe next time don’t do it during lunch/dinner? 😂
Haha, agreed 😂
Could I use this structure with other than mystery stories?
I am really busy till 31st, so I would definitely do this on 31st or probably the next week. Some stuffs going on:[
Hope everythings alright!
@@JoeWebb-TheStoryteller Yup just busy for a audio video competition. But really it has all become a mess, I am just sitting now in front of my pc watching it crash again and again. My mind seems to blast🤯
Power cuts whilst explaining the outlining of your mystery.
*Queue dramatic music*!
The tree choppers were the red herring, the real clue was the Tesco Tea; Tesco didn't appreciate the slander!
Plot twist. The kettle killed the power, in the kitchen, with the induction heater.
Can you upload a doc file with the complete thing?
Sure thing. A few people have asked me to. Check back in a few hours and I'll have linked it in the description :)
Actually, I've decided actually I'm going to do a bit more work on this and really refine it. I'll release a video on this, eventually.
Hey...thanks for uploading a lovely video.. honestly enjoyed it very much. How can I download the stuff you wrote?😭
Thank you! :D I'll tidy up the document and I'll find a place to upload it :)
Actually, I've decided actually I'm going to do a bit more work on this and really refine it. I'll release a video on this, eventually.
Hey again... 🌹. I'm still waiting for it 😅😅😅
Thanks for the tips.I'm writing a story about one of my neighbors Elon Musk
what software are u using to create this fasting plotting
It's word
Me (compelte amateur) :
Watches video is working along, pauses goes on phone.
Get's up from around pc goes on phone, start watching useless youtube shorts.
Get's upset closes phone for a little bit, think to myself about the story.
Suddenly gets massive inspiration, then hammers out an outline of what I wanna do and accompish with my story, feels super happy.
Honestly I started writing for about week now and i have 0 background in it and oh my gosh, I can see the potential light at the end of the tunnel. I just might be able to write something.
Posting this for accountability, also just me screaming into the void the emotions I feel. Also lowkey procastinating already.
P.S I have never read or written a mystery novel before, would appreciate some recommendations from anyone.
P.S.S I haven't realised how little I know till i started to try and write about stuff.
P.S.S.S I already regret posting this before even commenting it.
Try reading Dame Agatha Christie,
Walter Mosley,
John D. MacDonald and
James M. Cain. They are all very different writers. Hopefully, by reading their books, you’ll get a feel for the genre which will allow you to explore many, many other mystery writers. Have fun and good luck.
@@jadakowers590 thank you, right now I'm pretty deep in my Japanese studies. I will save your suggestions on my phone so I remember them.
