Confessions of a middle aged woman: just turned 50 and instead of dying my hair purple(I’m a hair stylist that’s too cliche) I bought a pair of these boots in white. To my surprise I was able to work in them all day no problem. One of my only pairs of docs that didn’t require break in, everyone’s feet are different so I think I just got lucky. For anyone who’s worried about breaking the tongue in on these, the Sinclairs have a single piece tongue and when the zip piece is removed look very similar to the Jadons, but without the stiff two part tongue! they do have a slightly different toe cap and no zip on the side but I’ve found them much comfier and longer lasting than the Jadons (I wear them all day when I work as a barber comfortably) :)

  • @olivia-zh6ou
    @olivia-zh6ou 3 года назад +55

I have a pair of Jadons, I love how they look and stuff and they’ve lasted much longer than I thought they would. I really love the thick sole, but that’s really the only good part for me. One bad thing about the sole, that I’ve experienced, is that they make it difficult to take normal steps because they are so wide and heavy. I have very small feet and I am used to being close to the ground with something more like converse, so they were difficult for me to get used to. The leather is very stiff, even after three years of fairly regular wear. And while it is still stiff, it also seems to act like pleather is some spots and I have even found some splits in the leather, which I was hoping were just holes in the coating or something. The tongue was very hard to deal with when I first got them, but I’ve gotten used to it. I have a terrible dislike for the side zippers, and the seam in the very back(caused many blisters). The zippers made it difficult to pull the boot on straight, and this lead to the leather right around the heal area, to wear away very quickly, causing awful blisters(this happened even when I made sure to loosen all the eyelets properly, so I eventually gave up and started yanking them on like an idiot). They do get very hot, if you’re not wearing thicker socks, your feet can sweat and start slipping around in the boot. These boots didn’t take me very long to break in, but that’s because I wore them for almost three weeks straight. I find that even after three years, they still have almost zero flexibility in the soles. Also, one last point of issue for me would be the insoles, or half insoles. These insoles were very uncomfortable for me in the beginning, and I don’t know why it’s built this way.
At the end of the day, I do still love them and the way they look, but there are quite a few aspects that I would definitely encourage people to consider when looking into making a purchase. They are about $230.00 Canadian, at least they were when I bought mine, and I don’t know if I would buy them again, just after my experience(the very painful experience might I add), at least not that this price point. If you don’t feel that you can break them in yourself, there is a large market for gently used doc martens, so I’m sure that there would be a nearly new, broken in pair of boots in your size, and for a much more reasonable price. Sorry for the long comment but I think it’s important that people consider this heavily before buying a pair of boots, only to find out that they don’t like the look or feel, or even the quality of the boots.

The soles weren't really a problem for me walking wise, but I'm used to heavy shoes and platforms, they were actually quite low for me 😅, but they gave me blisters on the bottom of my feet. I also had literal wounds on my toes and heel. After that they are comfortable as fuck to me tho. The tounge for me wasn't really an issue at all, nor do my feet get hot and sweaty in them. But that might be because I wear them mostly in winter and rainy cold weather. The half sole pad thing however is driving me nuts because it unsticks from the boot and I have to rearrange it into place every single time. As far as putting them on goes that's a breeze for me, but again is probably because i had a pair of undercover boots that were higher and didn't have the zipper on them so it took me like at least 5 minutes to put them on. It's intresting to see the diffrent experiences people have and what they prefer in their shoes tbh.

Believe it or not, my feet are wide, and I usually struggle to push my feet into boots. BUT size 7 perfect. I'm an 8 shoe. Very happy. Can't wait to wear these in, and wear more often. The regular size was crushing my feet, but the wide size was comfortable as a cloud. I tried Bates, but even their Xtra wide sizing is too narrow for me. I guess I got wide feet.
My feet being flat also made me have to get special insoles that flatten out the inside of the shoes so that they don't hurt my feet.

When we were youngsters (im now 61) Doc Martens were the thing in London. I had a pair when I was in my 20s but they did not suit me and were clunky. They were work boots really, then Punks wore them, and also skinheads and suedeheads in the mid 70s and the 1980s. They were an appropriation of workmens gear and they were hardwearing. Very soon they moved over to a fashion boot and adapted, workmen went over to cheaper boots with better steel toe caps. The two groups, punks and skinheads hated each other- but both wore Doc martens, Punks often wore Black and Skinheads always wore red ones, with lots of eyelets. Techies on music gigs and theatres workers always wore them (many still do) as they went with the black jeans and tee shirts they work backstage. They were a symbol of youth rebellion. I retired from teaching last year and Docs were still prized, mostly by girls BUT banned as school attire, which gave them even more kudos. I see them on young people on the underground and when you look hard they are always split where the foot creases along the front and the sole seems to wear thin. They have been a boot of the rebel for 50 years now, I wonder when that will change. Mark from london UK

I'm really happy with my jadons but all your points are sound. Still, they kinda work. The leather seems really durable, the sole is very comfortable despite that weird construction, the 2-piece tongue is fine, overall the build feels really solid. Maybe I got lucky? They've been making similar styles for 20 years or more but these are definitely getting more popular (it's the only platform boot I've seen guys wearing), and they manage to stand out even from all the imitations out there. Yes they are a bit overpriced but somehow Docs get away with it. Oh yes, I'm a guy 😆

A different sort of boot but a current trend with *big* questions about quality: Roller skates! (or I guess ice skates as well, lots of the same companies) Some are hand made in Red Wing Minnesota, some are good quality made in China, some are so cheap they're dangerous.

  • @michaelruff6547

A series I’d like to see would be of different iterations of military/combat boots over the years, as well as the different boots issued to people deployed in different climate zones; desert, jungle, arctic. Then compare a “combat” style boot to see how similar/different they are to actual combat boots. Maybe even do it near July for Independence Day
Also, I know how much you love your Redbacks, and I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but Redback has a new line called Blue Tongue Footwear. They’re a bit cheaper ($106), but unfortunately made in China, and as such I’m cautious about purchasing them (the Station specially). Think you could cut them in half and see if their quality is just as good or if the lower price reflects some cost cutting measures?

Thanks for the video. I’m in my 50’s and bought Jadons about half a year ago. I wear them occasionally when I want to look a little edgy.
The good: I actually didn’t need to break them in, and they are comfortable and easy to walk in. Also on rainy days my feet stay dry.
The bad: Despite being easy to walk in, you WILL feel your legs getting a work out on longer walks so you won’t be able to walk as far or as fast due to fatigue. Also the tongue on one of the boots keeps slipping sideways; I don’t feel it but can see it.

for the zipper/no zipper, they also make another style (cannot for the life of me remember what it's called) that looks pretty much identical to the jadons that has no zipper, it is usually pictured with ribbon-type laces but you could obviously just change those! I have a pair of these shoes. I bought them this year in August and I’ve worn them pretty much every day. I didn’t have to break into mine, they aren’t the most comfortable shoe ever but they aren’t a nightmare to walk long in, though you really have to pick up your feet when you’re walking. I got my shoes in a size 6 and they’re a little big on me, but I don’t mind because I’ll be able to wear them longer without my feet outgrowing them. Within about two or three weeks of wearing them the leather began to crease only in the left shoe. About two weeks ago I noticed that a small piece of leather in the front beginning to peel. Trying to figure out how to fix it. I’m honestly kind of disappointed since a lot of people have reported them being durable and comfy, but they started to crease and the leather peeled off within a month. I still really love the design though and plan on buying other pairs of docs

They really aren't the best as far as longevity goes, but they certainly are comfortable. I found them incredibly easy to break in since the leather was fairly soft and pliable to begin with, minimal heel sores, but I have always worn the cheapest possible socks or just none in general. But even after 3(4?) years of regular maintenance the leather didn't hold up so now they're absolutely cracked to shit. That's seems to be pretty bad for a pair of boots nearing the price of grensons on sale, and one that wasn't exposed to harsh environments as well as being maintained.
Funny you mention the zipper because that's exactly what I was deliberating over for a while as my reason for not buying them, I hate the the appearance of it so much but fuck me if it isn't convenient.

Sir, I would have to disagree with your statement "zippers dont belong on boots" (3:28). I 100% disagree, if done properly, zippers can make getting in and out of your boots quick and easy. Yes usually zippers indicate a crap boot, but some have figured out how to do it well. Or if your like me and dont want to have to worry about if the zipper fails then the boots junk unless you go get the zipper fixed. I myself get the zipper that is laced into the boot, if the zipper fails you can take it out and just put in your normal boot laces. And yes being able to jump in and out of your boots in a must for some people, first responders, military, or just construction workers who like to sleep in alot, zippers have their place in boots and if your worried about the zipper being crappy then the entire quality of the boot is probably crap. I'm sure the company didnt only skimp on the zipper quality.
