05: Resident Evil 4 ✅ I prefered DMC3 but RE4 deserved it more despite being a game I don't really like.

07: Bioshock ❓ Beautiful game with one of the best artistic direction ever but I'll take Super Mario Galaxy over it. Call of Duty Modern Warfare (i don't like it) had a great impact too this year.
08: GTA 4 ✅ With Mario Kart Wii as solid contender
09: Uncharted 2 ✅ That was a poor year...
10: Red Dead Redemption ✅ Without a doubt. But Xenoblade Chronicle deserved a GOTY too 😢
11: Skyrim ✅ Alice Madness Return deserved recognition too but Skyrim is THE game of this year.
12: Far Cry 3 ❓ Borderlands 2 deserved it more IMO.
13: The Last of Us ❓ I prefer The Last of Us but GTA V deserved it too.

15: The Witcher 3 ❓ Damn... Hard choice but I think Bloodborne is the 2015 GOTY. These two games are easily top games of ps4/xone era !

17: Breath of the Wild ✅ I Honestly think it isn't as great as people say but like it or not, it deserved the GOTY. Cuphead is in the same case than Xenoblade with RDR: it deserved GOTY but there was a game which litterally took all the attention 😢
2018: God of War ❌ Red Dead Redemption 2 deserved it way more IMO. And Monster Hunter World was a good opponent too.
2019: Sekiro ✅ RE2R deserved it too.
2020: The Last of Us 2 ❓ Ghost of Tsushima ?

No way GTA V would have gotten GOTY and TLOU didn't. TLOU was alot better in terms of story and had innovative gameplay.
Same thing with GOW and RDR2. GOW won because it completely revamped the series and revived it with new gameplay different from the older games, whereas the gameplay in RDR2 is still the same as the first game. I do think RDR2 is a good game, but all people talk when praising it is realistic details and how good the story is. The story is amazing, yes but after playing it once you realise how the game doesn't have that much replay value in terms of the rest of the world. I loved hunting and fishing, but there is no incentive to do it (except for the fishing side quest which is very quick to complete all instances of) e.g I hated how even if you bring food like game back to camp, it doesnt have an effect on the gang? Same if you donate money to camp, it doesn't have any desirable effect. Side missions were cool, but again same thing as the first game. And no, realistic details does not make up for gameplay.

Something which can be a solid point for a game may be less important for another.
Games like DMC, Doom or Dark Souls without good Replay value is a big problem. A game like GTA or even Monster Hunter aren't supposed to have a High replay value.
I give TLOU GOTY over GTAV because I prefer this kind of game but GTAV was / is a tornado which still top 10 most played game after 10 years. It has a lot of qualities.

Honestly morrowind was such a good game, I think it should have won 2002, I could be wrong, oblivion was also an amazing game.
I'm a little confused there because there's the "GOTY Edition" of Morrowind. They might have judged Morrowind without the add-ons. It still makes no sense when they call one version of it the "Game of the Year Edition".

There’s a few people in this comment section mentioning the Arkham games which I am surprised never showed up on this list. A few others that I’m surprised about are the injustice games and mortal Kombat. One personal favourite of mine that i am more surprised isn’t in here is borderlands 2. Borderlands is the best looter shooter and is a one of a kind game.

I obviously loved streetfighter two and played it like crazy with my brother, but I think it’s pretty obvious that the original Mortal Kombat should’ve won that year just because it was so groundbreaking and fun. I have a sneaky suspicion that it did not win because of the violence and gore. I’m assuming The game of the year did not want to be associated with it because of that but maybe it’s just because people liked streetfighter two more. I don’t know. Either way I had a blast playing both of them and I almost feel like they should’ve tied for winner just like god of war and red dead redemption two should’ve tied for winner. It’s rare, but sometimes you almost need to choose two games in the same year.

I honestly and truly believe that there should’ve been a tie the year god of war and red dead redemption two came out. I know that’s completely insane and weird to say and it’s probably not fair in terms of their always being a winner. But I genuinely feel that both of those games deserved to be winners that year. They were both so much fun. However, I will say, though that if I absolutely had to pick one over the other, it would be red dead redemption two. Mainly because I felt like it had more diversity in terms of how many things that you could do, how you could play the game, how your experience could vary, and so on. God of war, while being somewhat of an open world really was much more narrow and what you needed to do. It only varied in terms of which direction you decided to go and varied, and how many puzzles you could find. Obviously, the story was really good. But I’m just saying that red dead redemption two just had so many more things that you could do and discover and play. And the world was far more vast. People are literally still discovering things in that game in 2023. So if I had to pick a winner, it would be red dead redemption two. But I almost think they should have tied.
Honestly I thought RDR2 should have been game of the year for 2018. I do love God of War tho, close second in my books.

I think the reason why it got GOTY was because if you think about it. Yes Uncharted 4, is a masterpiece! But Overwatch brought something original for a multiplayer game that got fans attention to it by the arts, characters, gameplay, and original content!
