Salt and Sacrifice Review - The Final Verdict

  • For veterans of soulslikes, especially 2D ones, Salt and Sacrifice will fit neatly into your library as yet another largely successful interpretation of the subgenre. Those looking for the next level of challenge, artistic creativity, or gameplay innovation in it will almost certainly be left wanting though, as so much of this game’s DNA has already been explored countless times.
Still, while Salt and Sacrifice’s few wrinkles do add to the format, and with how well the boss fights pop off the screen, it's still a game that has much more to like about it than not.

@@HoshPoshJosh Have you fought the lightning mage? That one loves to use his stagewide AOE to juggle while slamming you down with his melee.
Not that it makes much of a difference since all bosses generally have the same movesets at this point, stagewide juggle AOE, somewhat more controlled AOE or homing magic, some even have AOE that turns into homing magic, and some form of melee to slam you in the ground and juggle some more.

Maybe I'd find it good if they modified launches to only occur when an extremely powerful attack hits and even then make it a short range knock down. Also implement crowd attack queuing so you don't get combolocked. Make salt spawn at where you fell from instead of your landing location.

It looks way better (still absolutely the same style, but I think the style of graphic and art is on purpose) , and the combat has been expanded with secret move sets, new interactions against bosses with new tools, a new monster hunter esque mage system . it definitely isn’t a revolutionary game, but it is a definite upgrade from Salt and sanctuary. If you haven’t tried it I highly recommend it. Gamebolt definitely didn’t beat the game and it shows, they haven’t gotten to some of those insane bosses that test all of your skills.

Just beat the game, took me 18 hours. And it is hand down the worst soulslike game i have played to date. It feels like it was not tested at all, as all enemies spam you with attacks non-stop, there is little to no balance to anything at all (word of advice: play with heaviest armor you can find and greatswords, otherwise you will suffer. A lot.): literally the first greatsword you can craft off of first mage boss will hard carry you to the end of the game and there is little to no reason to use anything else because difference between weapons is almost nonexistent and anything that is not greatsword is just plain garbage (daggers for example attack with almost the same speed but with significantly less damage, i mean 50 damage versus 8 damage is a nobrainer). With the right, above mentioned, setup all the bosses, especially main ones, are laughably easy, lasting a minute at most (i oneshot the last boss for the love of god. In a soulslike game), with only constant lack of stamina keeping you at bay, nonetheless optional mages will often bring you pain just because they will fill tiny arena with projectiles, burning puddles and whatnot, with zero chance to avoiding all of this, thus every fight turns to out tanking all the attacks with flasks. It feels like developers forgot to put pauses for enemies somewhere in AI scripting, or something. Level design is also horrible, every map feels the same, and there is no actual map, so good luck remembering where the hell you supposed to go, which is just stupid (and no, you can't have teleports between bonfires, you are welcome to walk all the way to the boss at the end if you decided to restock in town). Also developer had a brain fart at some point and decided to remove visible health bars from enemies - completely retarded idea in itself - and tried to justify it by saying that it makes the game more actiony. Well, it sure as hell does not. All it does is frustrates you a lot. Feel free to add very clunky controls on top of all this and you get yourself hell of a game.... not. Please, do yourself a favor and avoid this dumpster fire like a plague, unless you are into masochism or something.

to anyone complaining that you run out of stamina all the time- my, how ds3 and elden ring spoiled you, letting you roll spam thru every situation. that being said, LEARN TO DEFLECT (i.e. perfect block). deflecting uses no stamina, and there are items that heal you upon deflecting. the one that heals on dagger crits (the one all characters have) heals your entire health bar too, just an fyi. but back on topic: for mages- deflect their slow melee attacks. roll only when you need to, like on elemental or status attacks, or long attack strings that are too hard to deflect all of them. the timing for deflecting seems to be pushing block as soon as the swing starts moving forward, so it can be rough on delayed attacks, but practice and you’ll get it.
also, think of this game more like a 2d monster hunter than just a souls game, and it’ll make more sense.
oh.. and for moves like the hydromancer water spouts; don’t roll unless you have too, just jog left or right of them and use that down time to heal or use a ranged attack. overall it’s about learning when to hold off and when to be agressive. you can’t just go button mashing your way thru it with a big sword. you actually have to plan a bit. for instance- 2 mages and a a mess of enemies in your way? let them duke it out amongst themselves a bit, use ranged weapons to lure some enemies away, or find another way around. don’t just run in and then moan about how you keep getting juggled. use your heads
