25 years ago today I was privileged to hear this work live, performed by a quintet that included the composer's widow Irina at the piano and first violinist was Oleh Krysa, a perennial Schnittke interpreter and for whom Schnittke wrote more than one composition. These five performers achieve the same intensity that I remember in that performance then. The Piano Quintet is a transcendent work that should be more frequently programmed.

Such fabulous music. Why can't we ever hear more of it?

I deeply bow to the five musicians. To the electricity they manage to radiate here. Each one of them does not play Schnittke's music but materializes into a character of and during its opaque but statement-strong narrative. It let the piece take my breath. Thank you.

This is modern music which is highly ahead of its time. Enthrallingly captivating with so many lovely variants.

After 4 of the most bleak, raw and empty movements, the palpable sense of hope in the main theme of the finale is devastating. What an extraordinary work!

Very weird but very touching. Schnittke's piece in memory of his mother. Thanks for uploading this.

Muchas, muchas gracias.

Thank you very much for this exquisite piece of music. I have heard it yesterday alive in São Paulo, with Quarteto Osesp plus pianist Lucas Tomazinho alive. Fascinating!

Cette oeuvre profonde fut composée après le décès de sa mère, à sa mémoire, en 1976. On comprend mieux son intériorité et sa puissance émotionnelle.

Schnittke really says things in music that are difficult. The trills and microtones going into the middle of this music here give us the picture . The ending actually seems radiant with hope not promise but hope. This is now the quintet Id moslike to hear in public not the Brahms or Franck anymore ! Fabulous performance here ! one can hear the Brahms somewhere ,anywhere musicians are playing and we need it .This Soviet anguish and dour ,bleating bleakness shuld be a rare thing unless one wants to feel Trump getting Stalin's power in the U.S.A

The interpretation that I have in mind is that of Martha Argerich and friends but this one does better than just standing the comparison, particularly in the "tempo di valse" section.... Thanks for posting !

For me, the bleakness was overwhelming as well as the mental anguish. A monument to irretrievable loss. I now the work is there , but how often do I want to listen? The musicians were superb.

Schnittke's langage is so peculliar. Polystylistic technique meets neo baroque elements of the Concerto grosso in several pieces. His Quintet is my favorite one (love to play the cello part).

Portions of this music, with its seeming struggle between the foreboding and the beautiful, would make a great soundtrack for dramatic scenes in which Dr. Jekyll struggles with his Mr. Hyde persona.

Sounds like an abstract of "Darling Donka Shoen" sorta. It's really good. Maybe that's sarcasm. Maybe his feelings on the despair of losing one you loved or never having them, who had no recapitulation. Maybe not, but.....anyway really kickass! Love the panning. Makes it sound so much better than centering, it really fills out the stereo field and gives each part more distinction.

Horrifying is the probably the description schnittke would have liked for this piece, also saying pseudo music is like saying pseudo art, you're not really capable of defining either yourself, few people ever have been, only one i've ever heard of doing the like is marcel duchamp.
