Allan Holdsworth "Shallow sea" Roma march 23 1997

  • Holdsworth Novak Carpenter
    In 1997 I approached Allan before a concert at the Big Mama in Rome. I told him: "I would like to record the show, I am a teacher in jail and I sometimes show music videos to the prisoners" Allan stared at me without saying anything for a long time, he was trying to read my eyes to check if I was trustworthy, then he looked carefully at the video camera and finally granted me his permission. I was very close to the stage and the concert was about to begin, the Big Mama manager ominously approached me and said dryly: "You can not record!" "But Holdsworth has just allowed me ..." “Don’t bullshit me, he never allows anyone to record his shows!” “Just ask him, do you think I am that idiot to hold a videocamera in front of him?” “No way, switch it off” Allan realized what was happening and asked the manager to come closer. He told him more or less “ He teaches to prisoners, he wants to show them the concert, I allowed him to shoot otherwise his pupils would torture me” Still doubtful the man stepped back and the amazing show could start.

    Wow - for anybody else, this guitar solo would be the greatest solo they'd ever played in their entire life, and it woud be talked about for decades. For Allan, it's just another gig in Rome...and he probably thought he sucked.

      And he probably apologized for his guitar sound....
      He was simply mind boggling to say the very least.

    The ultimate trio as for me, and "the sixteen men of tain" as my favorite Holdsworth album. The most "jazz" oriented of Allan's band due to Novak and Carpenter immense swing skill. Salut les artistes!

      Absolutely! I’ve always considered Allan’s music “psychedelic”, the tone, phrasing, and chords Allan uses often remind me of psychedelic electronic/ambient music, and his solo stuff is one of the few things I’d categorize as “psychedelic jazz fusion”, along with Ozric Tentacles

    Imagine if he played a pentatonic lick by accident !!

    • @jfo3000
      @jfo3000 Год назад

      You might know this, but he plays pentatonic, though different than everyone else...except that now many have copied him. His are 3 note per string "stretch" configurations that don't sound bluesy.

    • @dylano0126
      @dylano0126 7 месяцев назад

      @@jfo3000 Not just the 3-note-per-string, but also in groupings (like 4, 5, 6, etc) and permutations. Also sometimes he'll go up pentatonic scales chromatically, changing the key and such. Even with the simplicity of the pentatonics, Allan found a way around making them sound like his normal selection of scale like messiaen mode 3 and such. That's what you call genius!!!

      I agree. And i also think that he's a shell of his former self. It's almost unbearable, nowadays his playing seems to be made up of 99% "outside" runs that just sound belligerent - and his abilities are fading away. Much love to the man, i'm a HUGE fan, but he definitely isn't all there anymore.
