@@Samsgarden Well, he obviously labored over his guitar intensely for many years earlier in his life, but once you reach a certain degree of virtuosity, there isn't really any point in deliberately practicing. At that point you're just developing ideas further, rather than things like technique, practicing scales, fretboard and theory knowledge, etc.
Technique is secondary. His originality in the composition, harmonies, voicings and improvisation are what males him so unique and artistically outstanding. That's something that some few have, real talent, and it can't be teached nor learned in a music school.
The first time i heard Allan was when i was about 16 so that would be about 1967 or 68. My friend s guitar teacher said listen to this guy from Bradford just down the road. Best fguitarist in the world he said. That becsme a standard joke with our group for a couple of years. Allan Holdsworth best guitarist in the world. Turns out it wasn t much of an exaggeration. In time i became a devoted fan and bought every album and CD he ever made. My big regret is i never saw him play live. When he died it was akin to losing a family member. What a phenomenon. He ll be appreciated decades ftom now.
It's funny from the mid 70's to the mid 2000's I tried to get my wife to listen to him. I finally booked a front row seat to see him at the Paramount. We were literally ten feet from him. After the concert she finally said she could listen to him all day!! I told her he was the most interesting guitarist of the last forty years. I guess she finally believed me!!
And I thought, "If only I bought a couple of Hughes and Kettner amps I could maybe at least get that tone." And here he is using 2 Fender Super Reverbs - And I have 2 Fender Super Reverbs already. And, and, and forget it.
From 86' to 95', Allan was in such glorious years... Atavachron, Sand, Secrets, Thruth in Shredding, Wardenclyffe Tower, Hard Hat Area, participations on Wackerman solo releases, Level 42... Wow.
Totally agree...and I'd add None Too Soon as well as 16 Men. Mid 80's to Y2K. Amazing run! Don't get me wrong...I've enjoyed every note until he passed, but those were certainly his glory days, as they say.
It is the second Golden Age of music. Baroque first. Then J.S.Bach was reincarnated in AH and came back to say, "hey you idiots, I've got something else to spur you along for another 350 years".
The thing is, as good as he was in 1980, by 1993 he's like twice as good, he grew exponentially. We're all still catching up to him and he's been gone for years now. BTW, he sounds great through Fenders
After blasting a hole through time and space on Pud Wud, he acknowledged the crowd going mad, with a nod. Sort of 'Yeah I think that was decent enough'. Cracks me up. The greatest.
Noon is a fine time of day to be sure my friend; it may be "better" as you say, (than perhaps 4am, for example?) but you misspelled it-there is no "e" on the end. What that has to do with Holdsworth's amazing abilities, I have no idea; I suppose it is because he played awesome solos during that time of day? Noon and Allan Holdsworth...a great time of day, and a musical genius!
I love how the drummer had to take his shirt off like he was playing a 2-hour rock concert! (Never seen a shirtless drummer playing jazz lol) I guess you have to give that much energy to even come close to keeping up with Holdsworth.
Yes, and I remember this level of impossibly great playing that was like staring into the void; terrifying and thrilling, from him every fucking time I went to see him, which was many! The thrill of his genius is impossible to do justice except by simply getting people to experience it for themselves.
Allan Holdsworth: Mr Einstein of the el guitar at his very best! Most of the time watching this video, with my jaws on the ground, i just want to burn my guitars..... This should be forbidden! It's a crime! On the other hand, very inspiring! Enough talk.. let's practice and practice and practice....... Thank you very much Master Allan!
i remember very clearly listening to him for the first time asking myself: how is this even possible? and here i am, a couple of years later, listening to him playing in this video, asking the same question anew. the degree of musicianship on display here is just so far beyond the apparent mental and physical boundaries of a human being.
My all-time favorite guitarist bar none. He is in a separate category from some other universe. Allan Holdsworth is now teaching all the other greats who have left us.
Do you remember that one time when an alien god decided to play guitar? What the eff am I listening to?! This is incredible, beautiful, insane music. The true master.
Saw him on this tour, too. Where he got to in the early 90s was just spectacular and utterly unique among guitarists. I've heard a few others try to get to that legato place, but no one has yet gotten to his level. Just magnificent. And what a tone.

Allans first solo here reminds me again why he is so great. Mindblowing stuff!
I've listened to and loved Allan for over 30 years (since I was kid - older brother is a guitarist). I hadn't seen this video and even though I sort of know what to expect when listening to Allan (in terms of how creative and musical he is), I just can't believe how on fire he was on this gig - it's simply mind-boggling!!
When i listen to most guitarists I can comprehend what they’re doing, even if I can’t do it. I can’t even figure Allan out when I’m WATCHING him play it.
Thank goodness this astonishing performance was captured for all to see. Allan and the band were at the height of their powers. Truly exhilarating and very very special indeed.
Skuli is KILLIN' it on PUD WUD !! 15:44 is TYPICAL Allan . He fucking played one of the most BRILLIANT guitar solos, ever and he thinks he fucked up and is embarrassed., SO Allan....
While living in Scotland, a friend introduced me to Allan's music. Upon first hearing, I was stunned by the complexity and depth of his playing. A true genius.
This is certainly Allan at the height of his powers. He was always the best electric guitarist I ever heard since buying the Tempest album in the early 70's (which was a quantum leap compared to the blues rock that came before) RIP.
He's sort of the one guy who both played terrifyingly hard shit that was equal to or greater than what other electric guitarists were doing, and went far enough out into left field to do it in a completely unique way that was all his own. No one had played anything like this in the history of the instrument, not in the jazz world, rock, flamenco, anything. Even anyone who's doing it now is trying to sound like him.
Many thanks for uploading, the quaffer is at his absolute best on this one, that Looking Glass solo is one of his finest live I've ever heard. RIP Allan, you are truly missed
Never had to set fire to his Guitar/dress in stupid looking clothes/smash up the amps/speakers what's it called now? extreme talent/ genius/forward thinking/progressive inventive mind set!!! what else can you say about Allan!! We have a Bradford Lad and a Leeds Loiner in the band Guitar and Drums.I used to get sick of informing/telling people about particularly Allan (and Ollie Halsall), people were blinkered about Yes/led Zeppelin/jeff Beck /J Hendrix etc etc etc Allan was light years ahead of these people I think only The Mahavishnu Orchestra was doing things inventive in the fusion world at that time.I like the way Allan developed the piano like chord structures for his music to uplift and infill the gaps and intros particularly in the three piece outfits.I know he missed playing with Alan Pasqua in the Life time episodes.I was saddened when Allan had to sell his Guitar to get back home.I have respect for people who give their all for their art scrape by financially, die penniless for the greater good. I think sometimes in the music world people survive in seconds of things happening, a really good solo, or song structure a brief moment of ecstasy until they find out that some bastard has run off with the gig money, or stolen some or all of their equipment! some wonderful thing that happened that day.I am pleased that John McLaughlin ended up in Monaco at least he could sell up, down size and still have a full plate of food or Miles driving around in a Ferrari, good luck to them, but I am always dead chuffed that Allan comes from West Yorkshire as though we aren't allowed to be creative in the North of England! you know Dame Janet Baker/Joe Cocker/ John McLaughlin/Bill Nelson/Gary Husband etc etc etc Gods own County He just took everything up to a whole new level!!!
Minds intact and enhanced, but sadly, all who listened and heard the genius must contend with the fact that the best concerts of our lives are behind us now that he's gone.
I dedicated all my solos on Sheer Cerebral Powers „Sucker Punch‘d“ record to the loving memory of Allan….especially on the title track and the single „Blow“
Hey Holdsworth fans … check out Joshua Meader from Australia. He’s been playing since a child and all he plays jazz to metal and everything in between. His improvisational skills are pretty intense. Check him out on RUclips. He looks to be about 28 years old. He doubles saxophone lines from the greats note for note. Crazy skills and musicality.
and interestingly, AH's successors produce safe music too. It's philosophically inconsistent to mimic his tone, his legato and to codify his playing into licks. The pretenders don't get it. Holdsworth never copied anybody.
I hope this comment isn't misinterpreted, because it's not like I don't LOVE Jazz, but Allan should definitely at least partake in a Heavy Metal side project. Playing leads like that would definitely make for some intense Metal. I know he was in Planet X which was sort of Metal/Jazz Fusion type stuff, but maybe if he did a collaboration album with Meshuggah or something. That would be interesting. Either way, Metal or not, the guy shreds unlike anyone else out there
It sounds like he's been practicing guitar non-stop for 500 years.
And he eschews practice

I’ve been listening to Allan for my whole life, 35 years now. The hard hat era is my favorite but I hadn’t seen this live until now. Wow, this is peak

Angelic combinations of beautiful notes...
Rest in Peace... Allen...Holdsworth..Blessed to have heard you.

You have a Keeper!!!
My old guitar teacher said women hate arpeggios so practice them alone. Are you sure your wife is a woman? One in a million.
Had a table chat with AH back in 1985. .such a nice man. 👌
There will never be another.
There will never be another of anything
