    Dear Willie , what a conundrum !
    GB and not RE ?
    That is the question .
Whether 'tis classic in the mind
To suffer the aches and pains of a single seat .
And to wrest one's arms against a wind of troubles .
    Or by going Honda ,
    End them .
To travel , perchance to arrive , aye there's the rub down with an oily rag ,
The undiscovered country ,from which one on a Honda may return .
There's the respect of so long a warranty
For those who would bear the Whips and Scorn of Uncle Stu .
Goodnight Willie , there claps a Noble Spirit .
No over there , or perhaps there .
PS . We do know that you like a brown seat , but from the smell emanating from the tall thin shed , the present occupier does not .

A Honda for the price of a Royal Enfield, what's there to think about? plus the Honda top speed isn't restricted so although it's only 20bhp, its capable of actually going over 70mph. The problem for me is it's still £4000 which I don't wish to part with, especially when you can buy a RE continental GT 650 or Interceptor for just over £3000. Like you said give it another couple of years when this bike sector is completely saturated with 2nd hand Royal Enfields, Triumph 400's, Honda 350's etc then it might be worth looking for a bargain. Although for me I'd still be happier with my 47yr old Honda CX500. Old bikes don't feel sterile like the modern ones, so I'd still be searching for a cheap classic rather than the modern retro and yes I know a 47yr old bike will never be as reliable as a new one, so buy two and that way one will always be on the road. Classic insurance no road tax or mot, just change the oil every year and happy days.

One thing i like about the Honda is it's 90.5 mm stroke which reminds me of the old Bsa b44/B50 (90mm) and if you listen to it it has that real thumper crack to it even more so than the Enfield J series. That alone makes me want one and as a B50 was my first "big" bike back in the early 70s I feel this would be a nice swansong bike for me. Might have to sell my c15 and do it. Only young twice.

Do you buy motorcycles on looks alone? The RE 350 definitely looks more classic than the Honda but looks are only skin deep. When you marry for looks you still have to live with the woman, metaphorically speaking. I have no experience with the RE bikes but I have no doubt about the quality of the Honda. Do try one out and let us know what you think. A 350 from any manufacturer would not really be suitable for the higher speed and longer distances we experience in Canada unless most of the use is in town but they are perfect for a lot of the the back roads in the UK. You would probably be a little cramped on either of them. I am under 6 feet and find the seat to pegs geometry a little tight on my W800 after a couple of hours. Other than that is is fine.
    Cheers Willie: BJ

Spooky vid! I've been torturing myself over whether to order a GB350S (4599 EUR, five year guarantee here in France) as a replacement for my CL500. I only really have cash and room in the garage for 1 bike of my own (my other half is taking her test very soon so budget and space is tight). My heart is pulling me towards the 350 (love the looks and I could probably easily cope with the 20HP on the back roads which is where I am 90% of the time) but my head is telling me to keep the CL500 because of the versatility and the suspension, which is just right for the dodgy road surfaces. Be just my luck to order the 350, then Honda announce a GB500. Looking forward to the UK and European reviews of the GB350S as they're posted in the coming months. If the Z900RS were available in an A2 compliant restricted form (as is the standard Z900) I would be trying to steer my better half in that direction for her choice - absolutely gorgeous bike, the best of the neoretros in my view. Love your cheerful content 👍. All the best,

If I remember correctly, I found you through Mr TAYM. So… blame him. 😂
I think the Honda is a retro UJM and the RE is a modern remake of Vintage Classic motorcycles. I believe Yamaha had the SR 400 which I’d consider a retro UJM from the late 60’s 70’s. So they would probably appeal to different taste but be equally reliable.
I like the Vintage Classic style of the RE, HP being equal. If the CB 350 had something like 10-15 more HP than the Classic 350 then that would sway me for other reasons. The giddy-up appeal, I suppose. 😉
Another consideration might just boil down to who is a rider’s local dealer. In the end that’s why I added the Svartpilen 401. I’m gonna describe it as Techno-Steampunk in style. 😂

Hi Willie - it’s Big Rodders in Ireland. I love the idea of the new Honda GB350 - lowish weight, great pricing, engine not restricted and Honda build quality. However, it’s geared too high so has to be revved unless a smaller gearbox sprocket is fitted, which knocks out the speedometer accuracy. Also, I couldn’t take pride in any of the colours on offer in the UK. However, I plan to test ride one but whatever happens I won’t be getting rid of my yellow Monkey.

Think the GB will do well. But I personally think, that RE has a loyal fan base. The J platform engine has so far proven to be a very reliable engine.
But at least there is more choice nowadays in smaller capacity bikes, which is good.

Yesterday I saw the Classic 350 in green and chromed in the raw. I was astonished about the quality of the chromed parts, painting, metal parts, view of the bike while driving, wonderful spoked wheels and 18" rear wheel. Haven't seen the GB yet, buy the RE is a tough competitor with its paint schemes, 50's look and honest offer. From my point of view, I'd choose the Honda because its weight, less frecuent valve clearance checks, reliability and more service concessions. Both are great bikes though.

Let's kill one myth and that the Honda will be more reliable than the Royal Enfield cus it's a Honda. Since when has the RE Classic been unreliable? I've had lots of experience with new Hondas from 2009 up until 2022 when I sold my last one. I have to say the build quality of Honda isn't a patch on earlier Honda's and Royal Enfield could teach Honda a few things on how to screw a bike together and particularly at a budget price. Honda is supposed to be a premium brand, sorry, but it's still trading on its previous reputation.☹️👍

I rode a Classic 350 at a RE demo day two years ago and loved it, but the nearest RE dealer to me is 2.5 hours away by motorway so not an option for me; too far away should I have an issue or need dealer service. My first ever street bike was a 1974 Honda CB360 which I bought in 1980 for $400, this GB350 is neat but its a modern retro as opposed to a more real "classic". The Honda at least there's dealers everywhere if one needed dealer support but not something I would buy. I do think the USA is getting a GB500 and not the 350 which makes sense I suppose but suspect it'll look the same, just punched out to 500cc. Oh, sorry about your wood!!

You compare the RE and the GB entirely on looks. Some of us don't care as much about looks and care more about the technical details and how that affects the operation of the machine. We're all wired differently and there's no right or wrong way to make your motorcycle purchasing decisions. For example, the Honda has cast wheels which are lighter, easier to clean, accommodate tubeless and don't have to be trued and checked for rim runout on a periodic basis. Others will favour the RS's wired wheels even with the shortcomings in order to achieve an aesthetic. Both are legitimate views. For me, the Honda is the clear winner.

@@2wheeledwillie395 I didn't do a very good job of explaining what I was getting at. You state: "But at the end of the day looks are a big consideration when buying a bike".
This is true for you and a lot of buyers but is it true for everyone? Trim being chrome or plastic will have no effect on my enjoyment of a ride. Someone can ask me what colour a bike that I've owned a few months is and I struggle providing an answer without having a look at the bike. Is it grey? Silver? Two tone? I'm the sort of person who just doesn't care. That's the point that I was getting at. What is of critical importance for one person may very well be a trivial detail for another. We're not all wired the same way and there's nothing wrong with that.

Hello Willie, personally I'm not a fan of the RE Classic 350 so of the two I'd pick the Honda GB 350,
Although, if I had £4000 burning a hole in my pocket and a garage to park-up a bike in, I would immediately go out and buy the RE HNTR 350 which for me looks far better than both.
I will add that if you can't spanner yourself, the Honda will likely cost a fortune to maintain in comparison, I was quoted £100 for a full engine gasket set (just the gasket set) for my VT500 ED back in 1990 so I'd hate to think what there spares cost now.
