That is one of the greatest years. Especially with Millens bonkers gt4. It was a huge upset. Tajima and Mullen were both idols of mine. Why I got into racing.
Man, this race was so much better on dirt. I went this year, and while it was an experience, I don't know if I will do it again. Watching cars drive up the track on asphalt is not nearly as awesome as watching them race up on dirt.
PandyTim no WWF, oh, yeah. In the beginning, I just didn't edit because I'm a lazy old man..when people started telling me they liked it, I was pretty stoked. If you see one you like (especially if it's a car commercial) rip & share whatever you want!
+raikkonen2013 , me or one of the other marshals in my group would tape this every year, since we couldn't actually go out there to work it. We'd have a big party and watch it together. It just really bothers me that the only tape of it I have is a year they didn't go all the way to the top!
+oldSCCAguy yah but hey at least you have it on tape. Most of these events have been lost in history. Its amazing you got to share it. Brings back great ol memories for you I'm sure. By the way that Suzuki Escudo is one heck of a car.
CnyAutofreak Thanks! I used to record it every year, and we'd (road racing Corner Workers) have a party and all watch it together. Can't believe the only one that survived was the year the course was short. Grrrrr.
@@fatman1288 yes. I was kinda suggesting re the comment above mine. It is hard to select tyres fore multiple surfaces, but there's heaps of courses that have a combination. I also miss the old 'peak.

Rick LeRoy, I don't know if anyone *ever* showed it live, since it takes so long to complete it. Last time I remember watching it live was a bunch of different online streaming stuff. Maybe 2010 or so? If I'm wrong, and you've seen it live, gimme a reply..my memory's not what it used to be.
They don't televise it because it is an all day event from basically 6:30 ish a.m to 6:30ish pm and it is boring to be televised when a run goes without a hitch and when it does go wrong it's usually not that eventful
25 years later, the entire course is paved now, and a great time is just a smidge under 10 minutes. Just goes to show how much bigger the b@lls where back in the day.
HA! I knew at one point it had to have no real road. It WAS all dirt and mud when it rained. With all the training in the first DIRT game I had on that race, I couldn't understand why every video showing this hillclimb were on a perfect road, with no drift at all. XD
I miss the days Pikes Peak was dirt. It takes more skill to race it on dirt and it's much better to view dirt racing. It's a shame they ruined it by paving it.
Oh, so cool..found elsewhere on YooToob, old Chevy promotional film. '57 truck up the hill without using the road! ruclips.net/video/e-4A5pFbuLU/видео.html
Why do so many people have to complain about the roads being paved now. Old heads istg, it’s the same BS with group B. Yeah it was cool then and it’s still cool now lol

Love to see it. Even the commercials were a fun blast from the past.
This is so much better than this year's fully paved race!
Jon Geddes , agreed!! Crazy thing..I'm hearing that the paving has actually made the erosion *worse*.
+oldSCCAguy yah Say it ain't so.
Yeah this is excellent as good as rally for the same period. This is real racing, takes a giant dump on Nascar oval track yawn-fest.
it got paved 10 years ago, i remember watching this on tv when i was still in elementary school
@@danthe3d71 I’m just seeing this for the first time. Amazing.
Thanks for sharing, I miss this great old coverage! So many "good ol' boys" back then too.
thanks for sharing!! this is Awesome!! love those mustang 5.0's with big tires

I remember this years race... I was drooling over Rod Millens Celica and was well into my Toyota addiction at this point.
Dat old TV comecials

Very interesting David Donner ex Indy car converted to Pikes Peak race, awesome!!!
Very cool! Another event on the bucket list.
This was very cool watch. Thanks so very much
i was at this race on this day , only time i ever went . i was above glen cove . millens car sounded incredible
Just to clarify what the ESPN announcers were saying the Toyota 503E engine developed 1,100HP at the START and about 700HP at the top of the mountain.
Old commercials and all! Great upload!
seems nuts with the dirt road , these dudes are savages !! gotta love it 🔥
This is my kind of aesthethic
27:25 Teruaki Kobayashi??? Is he related to Kamui Kobayashi?
Gotta love the commercials.
Dam, being in the UK never seen the dirt version of PP but this is awesome.
imagine a true race..lived i c springs.. now is a .."really really"

i think that was Tajima in the Suzuki Cutlass, the pre cursor to the Escudo, both were available in Gt1 and 2

Cultus drivetrain in Escudo pikes peak car before ditching the twin 4 cylinders and doing the 2.0L V6 route in '96
Not in Gran Turismo 1 but both in GT2 and the Escudo for most future releases
rod millen is such a legend!
God those LS motors sound incredible
What a gem
they should of never paved it!. its now boring to watch!
Totally agree
@Peter Cunto half and half was too hard to "Tire" for - just massive compromise on both halves
Still plenty of rally courses that are dirt/paved/dirt.
@@AngryTurds there is but pikes peak should of remained dirt asphalt is boring asf

Wow, first year for the SuperTrucks! Nice!
The dirt track looks like more fun that the boring asphalt races
God fucking damnit I miss the 90's.
53:36 anyone else see the face(s) in the background hills/snow? 😮
Hey I have highlights of 97 that's when my dad did it my dad is also really good friends with the unsers and my grandpa to
the duncanjb , oh, dude!! Can you upload it?
You wouldn't happen to have the '97 Pikes Peak, would you? The one with the Suzuki Escudo?
Only True fans will remember the GT2 Escudo Pikes peak
So cool.. thanks a lot for uploading !!

Why don't they still show the PPIHC live on TV?
Rick LeRoy, I don't know if anyone *ever* showed it live, since it takes so long to complete it. Last time I remember watching it live was a bunch of different online streaming stuff. Maybe 2010 or so? If I'm wrong, and you've seen it live, gimme a reply..my memory's not what it used to be.

Rick LeRoy because ppihc has become meaningless since they made the dirtroads to streetroads.
25 years later, the entire course is paved now, and a great time is just a smidge under 10 minutes. Just goes to show how much bigger the b@lls where back in the day.
Millen's record is still the real record. Just say no to paved Pikes Peak.
I love the ads
One reason I'm here Escudo!
I’m here for the ads
*cultus
I feel like am 7 again even the Commercials are a trip
Just like to remind the World that Rod is from New Zealand originally
Man I grew up in the wrong era!!!
Like nowadays......all tarmac, always sunny...THAT WAS A RACE!
Now, unfortunately, it has lost much of its charm.

remember the days of ricks mears and the unsers.. pre-1985
lives in ellicot.. brother and i did guides in mountains.. hate the fact they paved and reduced the race to a race that aloowed the pussies in..
so much better dirt

I love super stock cars racing down on dirt. Would have been cool to see USA drivers race their camaros in WRC or something : D
@CrowJam- Camaros would not stand a chance against AWD WRC.
Why do so many people have to complain about the roads being paved now. Old heads istg, it’s the same BS with group B. Yeah it was cool then and it’s still cool now lol
Probably because it completely changed the way teams had to prepare for both surfaces, and it made a huge divide in the record timeline…
@@shaadydog1 times change lol it’s hardly a new concept that things change over time my issue was people complaining.
Just put some god damn security fence over the edge. FFS
Yeah people had money back then but nowadays it’s as if every competitor is sponsored by Ferrari
And Suzuki Wins!!!!!
"as gay goes up the mountain" xd
Watching old pikes peak videos and comparing it to the 2016 Pikes peak international hillclimb one can see climate change.
ruclips.net/video/omCAkCV9GB8/видео.html. Go to 4:40. In 1957 it had snow.

This is a dirt race yuck, I love the new track now
What a bitch comment.......
