Pikes Peak is an amazing place for a hillclimb. This year had crazy difficult conditions and just because he's an all time legend, Rod Millen shows up in the Pikes Peak Tacoma which is still one of the most bad ass hill climbing monsters of all time.
im sooo happy to see the pikes peak tacoma running again. i remember seeing it sooo many years ago and falling in love with how bad ass it was and seeing it again just brings back that smile again
@@irishwristwatch2487 Yes, this engine was use in GT500 since 1989, back then nissan skyline dominate the race, i think they won 29/29 event and toyota get tired of it, so they use supra chassis and swap this 2.0L 4cyl and beat the crap out of skyline, Yes... this little 4cyl beat RB engine.
No wonder why Porsche barely changes its design, no matter the competition they are near the top all the time. In terms of successful body/chassis designs i think only Lancer Evo comes close. And driver is top notch, used all the available surface and hit perfect apex mostly every time
AWD and being heavy might have helped in the wet conditions (downforce bleeds off at high altitudes, but mass is a constant, so he always had a certain level of traction), but it still took a seriously committed driver.
the gearbox is pretty much as good as it gets, so turbo lag is non existant, plus awd and a car that is save to push and won't snap on you + these 992 turbo S always seem to have insane drivers behind the wheel. I guess the other cars have anti lag of some sort, so that can't be it.
Big respect to anyone willing to go open cockpit at a race like Pikes. You're out in the weather, the fog, the cold, and in most places if you make a mistake you're going down a long way.
Big respect to anyone willing to drive at speed up Pikes Peak in weather like that regardless of what they're in, it's like that clip of Kimi Raikkonen flat out through a cloud of smoke except it's like 10+ minutes long.
Surprised how fast the lightly modified road cars were, especially when looking at the 1000hp+ cars. Its quite striking how such vehicles can be virtually equalised by adverse weather...
@@joe125ful In good or even decent conditions, it is absolutely necessary to be competitive at Pikes Peak. The wet and fog definitely dialed everyone WAY back.
The Tacoma is a beast - designed for the times when the peak was more gravel than tarmac IIRC. Saw it at Goodwood FOS - the way it launched itself up the hill was insane!
@@jarvissonger9214you can see it in action at 8:24. It's bodywork was completely built from the ground up, so it doesn't really look like a truck anymore. It's much lower to the ground, weighs just 885kg and pushes about 1000hp

I saw that 935 last year doing hot laps at Indianapolis. Same driver too, real cool to see him serious about taking a limited production race car racing.

It is adjusted significantly more to the clockwise direction later in the run when it gets wet...) Also standouts: -- The stock 992 Turbo S gave me chills...serious skills there. Hard to believe a stock model (minus exhaust?) beat a GT3R with 1000hp *and* a GT2 RS Clubsport! -- Equally, if not more impressive...Dai Yoshihara was on the *limit* in that Model 3 -- The sound of Ford V8 is always a nice addition to the mix!
