As a South African, I have to agree with you. So much meddling from our government has damaged our national airline beyond belief! Well in WWII it was not unusual for a fighter pilot to be 21 years old or younger. Not sure why people get so hell bent with younger pilots and I am not young.
the reason other countries seem to have older pilots is because most of them require pilots to pay their way into the industry which is very expensive. Then you have to build your hours and experience by flying smaller planes + being a flight instructor. In the US you can skip the high costs by being in the military but you have to be lucky and work for the military. For African airlines looking to grow and cant afford to lure foreign pilots, it only makes sense to run your own flight schools, pay to train your own pilots from within your borders. The pilots pay off some of the loan by working for them. With pilot shortage looming, you'll be seeing a lot of young pilots. The countries/Airlines that depended on the old models will be forced to invest in their own flight schools because luring other pilots will become very expensive and unsustainable.
It’s because Ethiopian airlines pays for your education, it’s basically free unlike in most other countries where it’s extremely expensive. Thus you have to work for years and save unless you’re born into wealth. Btw the main captain in this video isn’t young, we Ethiopians just look younger than we are 😁
@@ambessashield9360 Young compared to other countries' pilots. The main captain can be in his middle age. Young enough compared to other carriers' pilots.
Sam - great video! I would not have guessed at the quality of Ethiopian Airlines. I remember my first time having Ethiopian food. At first we all laughed when invited out by a friend. We couldn't imagine what that could be. (We lived in a time when starvation in Ethiopia was top international news.) But, we were so pleasantly surprised! I would love to go there someday and experience it firsthand. Thanks again!
Such a biased comment, thanks for being surprised that Ethiopia is able of achieving such things. Why is it always needed to mention the surprise. That alone shows the Bias!
@@markbogers4097 Yes, I believe I admitted my bias. I'm in my 60s and I remember when Ethiopia was a complete disaster. I haven't followed developments there over the past few decades - so yes, it was pleasant to see things are much better there than when I was younger.
@@christoney2491 To be honest that was Tigray region of Ethiopia, many Ethiopians in the South, Addis Ababa, and Amhara any other place other than Tigray was untouched no one was starving, it was the 1% of the people who made the 100% starve, not to say it did not happen but very foolish how the songs portrayed it to be completely, such as "It won't Snow in Africa"
@@OutletR Thank you. Yes, much of the world gets "information" filtered through political lenses. Another reason why I enjoy Sam's videos so much, is that he travels to places I've never been and shows them in an interesting and entertaining light. I really like his channel.
@@markbogers4097 Ethiopia had a major famine in the 1980s when the Marxist government fought the Eritrean rebels (who won in the end) and used famine as a weapon of war. That is a fact, not bias. The famous Live Aid concerts were held in 1985 to help with Ethiopean famine relief. Fortunately Ethiopia now has a normal government that helps to develop the economy and doesn’t starve its own citizens.

p.s. it is highly competitive to get into.
I really appreciate apilot who brought us from lalibela to Addis on Sunday afternoon around 10:40pm.
We are very proud. Thank you for visiting us
My favorite Airlines. Had a much better experience flying with Ethiopian Airlines then Brussels Airlines or Air France.
Proudly African ❤❤❤
A beautiful airline, and very stylish and friendly cabin crew. 👍😊🛬🛫✈️🇪🇹
We Africans sometimes do things right. Ethiopian airlines is a prime example. This is for those who still think Africa is a war zone
Hi Sam, always watching from LAS. I have flown ET last year FCO-ADD-SEZ, bought coach and bid a reasonable amount to upgrade to business class, if you know their load factor in some routes bidding to business is a great option. An excellent airline for the value and network.
Many thanks Sam for visit Ethiopia and introduced our proud Ethiopian Air lines.
