Wonderful video, album track by track breakdowns are my favourite thing you do 🙂 Looking forward to Noel telling you you're off your rocker in a few weeks!
Said before, but another example of where you so much deserve NG to feedback on all your outstanding research and consideration. The guy should be grateful, I mean what an honour to have someone create such great content of positively trying to understand you. Legend!
Even in the verses of live forever, it’s clear he’s talking about how he wants to escape boring Manchester. “Maybe, I don’t really wanna know, how your garden grows cos I just wanna fly” he doesn’t want to spend his life hearing his neighbours talk about their gardens and how they’ve planted new flowers, he wants to fly above with the rest of the rock stars. “Maybe did you ever feel the pain in the morning rain, as it soaks you to the bone” did you ever feel the pain of waking up in this depressing city where it is once again raining. Fairplay James, great vid.
Can you PLEASE do the same thing for Be Here Now and Standing on the Shoulder of Giants? You did it for (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? and now you've completed Definitely Maybe.
One of your best videos James, i love every second of DM. Im planning to leave my country going to Spain im from Argentina, listening this record in this moment of my life make me feel so indentify with young Noel. Thanks for this mate, great job.
I love these kind of videos, I'm from Uruguay and not many people my age know Oasis, so it's so nice seeing people that enjoy Oasis as much as I do.. tysm for this amazing video 🫶🏼
Absolutely fascinated by the connection between MWC and Whatever! I never saw that! Really enjoyed this, as always thanks for putting together such a class video James.
I love these videos! They're probably my favourite that you do. I've long thought of the first three as a trilogy, I didn't realise Noel had said the same. I'd also add in SOTSOG to make a quadrilogy(if that's a word?!). That album and it's b-sides reek of the end of the affair. It feels and reads so much like the morning after, the waking up and looking around and the realisation that everything is falling apart and the people around you are fake and/or no longer friends/lovers. Gas Panic(my family dont seem so familiar and my enemies all know my name) Roll it over, (Look around at all the plastic people Who live without a care Try to sit with me around my table But never bring a chair) I can see a liar, (He sits upon a throne He lives a sleazy lie But he's all alone again, again) Where did it all go wrong, (do you keep the receipts for the friends that you buy) Sunday morning call, (Because your thoughts and words won't last forever more And I'm not sure if it'll ever, ever, ever work out right If it'll ever, ever, ever work out right Will it ever, ever, ever work out right?) Put your money where your mouth is, (the bets are going down for judgement day so put your money where your mouth is) Let's all make believe, (lets all make believe that we're still friends and we like each other) cigarettes in hell, (I don't mind not being immortal cause it aint all that as far as i can tell....From the man who wrote live forever!) One way road (If I know where I'm going, I don't know from where I came - that sounds like the guy he's singing to in d'you wanna be a spaceman) I mean the titles alone are quite pointed and certainly in stark contrast to a lot of Oasis song themes to that point. Admittedly Go let it out doesn't really fit in with this theme, nor does little james but that was written by Liam. Who feels love does if it was put at the end as a kind of coda...as a finding himself again song. (I’m leaving all that I see Now all my emotions fill the air I breathe Now you understand that this is not the promised land They spoke of There’s nothing more to be If you can be the remedy who heals love)
If you think about it some more, you'll see just how well opening up with Go Let It Out works as an introduction to the happy, angsty high before the comedown. It's then followed by a mellow, positive, psychedelic trance. A nice message, but for the benefit of being traditional. Yes, Little James (a well done instrumental, if you ask me, with simple childlike vibes), is a bit odd, but it's brilliantly placed right after an angry brawl tune, but right before an extremely dark, anxious withdrawal tune. Like a calm in the eye of the storm. Finally, things start piecing together for him, starting with the aftermath being in Where did it all go wrong, followed by Sunday Morning Call... Then another angry wake up pointer tune at the height of realization of the Lies and the Liars(I believe it's either his alter ego personified, or it's targeted towards the soul suckers he's withdrawn from in his life). Lastly is a piece of calm, but melancholy acceptance, and laying your cards out on the table, as in turning over a new leaf, starting another chapter, but never forgetting to keep the users and abusers in their place, and see right through their facade. And Roll it over his soul. I love this album. I never appreciated it as a whole until this past year, while revisiting it and discovering it as an adult who's experienced the feelings and scenarios portrayed in this concept record.
Thanks bro. I’m a yank from Michigan. My grandmother is from England. I love British music. I’ve been to England once when I was 5 (I’m 33 now). A classic debut rock album with its strong consistent material that still sounds as fresh and unique. While Morning Glory is my favourite Oasis album, Definitely Maybe is one of those albums that came at the right time to continue why rock is as relevant and influential like the classic eras.
Great video, James, as always! Personally speaking, after watching your video, I think that (Its good) To be Free is the perfect B-Side to Whatever - title-wise maybe also some sort of conclusion to Definitely Maybe and a prelude to WTSMG?
I appreciate your love for and in-depth reviews and explanations of Oasis' misic. Here's what I don't get; why on earth is it referred to as "Pop" music, instead of Alternative Rock? Dont worry man oasis where a rock band, they don’t even sound anything like the britpop bands of the 90s there the only band that sound rock/punk classic rock
Theres an oasis book by mick middles i read back in the 90s where noel says 'married with children' is written from Louise's perspective. Keep up the good work on the channel
Excellent analysis James. Really well done. I wonder where we would fit in All Around The World. Somewhere in middle section as well I guess. Thanks. This was really enjoyable again. Noel also said that the Chameleons album Strange Times was all over his early writing so maybe that would an interesting angle for some future video!!
Its kind of perfect that it takes a theologist to unravel the true message behind the books of Noel and his younger brother Liam. Somehow it reminds me of a Kain and Abel story in the bigger context. What a great analytical work you do James. Much appreciated.
All the singles off Definitely Maybe are well worth having. They have b sides that most other bands would be chuffed to release as album tracks. Some of my favourite Oasis songs are those b sides off DM.

I see in a different way, Rock n Roll star is like the opening credits of the movie. Then flashes back and we get to know how did they get there. Last song is an ending credit, after all that journey, the guys just end up in a boring life, Married with children, despite all that crazy life.
Interesting video! Just on Whatever - I thought I heard an interview once which suggested this was aimed at his dad (e.g. his dad didn’t like him listening to blues music, hence the line “I’ll sing the blues if I want”).
Great vid as always. Noel was able to take his personal experiences and songify them in a genius way that sounded like a melting pot of his influences that everyone was into and a bit of grunge/electrafiction
Very well researched, interesting. Not a massive oasis fan but loved this album on its release. Never picked up on the lyrics, was always a turn it up full blast, rock and roll album for me. I like Noel, intelligent and witty guy. On the verge of national treasure status, always looks cool.

I used to play in a rock band when i was 17-18-19 years old, and i am from a very small town (10.000 people). In Manchester they may not have the glamour of London, but jeez, at least they have clubs to play. Where I am from we had nothing! We literally had to improvise concerts on the beach or in some rural abandoned building in the countryside !!!!! And w never complained. Of course I had to get the hell away from there in my 20s if I wanted to get a job, and so i did.
JAMES- could we get a deep dive on the brothers dynamic / feud- I know you touched on it in the reunion video but we want MORE. Also your videos are the best on RUclips 🎉
The crazy thing is that Noel most Definitely Maybe think of all of this consciously when composing this album. It seems that it would all line up with what was happening in his life at the time. His music has always been autobiographical, but accessible to the average listener, which is what made him the best songwriter in his generation. Rivers Cuomo from Weezer tended to write in the same way back in his glory days.
In the Definitely Maybe 10th anniversary DVD (I think it was) Noel talks about the track order and says it was to do with some label exec talking about people in the listening booths at HMV only having an attention span long enough to reach track 4 or so
Hey James have you heard of the band wunderhorse? I just came across them and their song midas they’re from the uk. I haven’t listened to much of their stuff but they seem to be really doing it really well good rock music.
Reporter: What can people expect from the first Oasis album? Noel (puts down his pint): "12 songs that are about being alive, about having a good time, about being happy, about enjoying yourself" Liam: "and then about being sad, dyknow what I mean. About knowing it can get better, about just life" That is what Definitely Maybe is about
Just shows how powerful Pete Townsend’s concept albums were . Yeah, The Beatles did concept album first but it’s about nonsense . Pete wrote about real life .
Looking forward to you doing similar with WTSMG Roll With It into Wonderwall into Don’t Look Back In Anger makes for a good sub-story, the completion and opposite outcome your Act 3 there You’ll do a good job of that. Make it happen!
20:23 comments at this time now don’t fit since the release of the Sad Song demo from ‘92 with Liam on vocals. Hey, but it’s just for fun and not an academic paper.
Definitely Maybe is a definitive classic Oasis album, it's not worth having an album collection without it in my view, and without this album, there would have been no Oasis, and these videos would never have been made.
Sadly, I think you’re exactly right. He’s done a deal with Tavistock. There’s no plausible alternative. He didn’t start from scratch and write all those songs. The origins story of the band getting signed is absurd. Check it out, with this idea in mind. Once you do, you find it not believable. As Mark Devlin says, bitterly: “Nobody’s fathers a plumber”. Be aware we don’t really know anything but what they’ve chosen to tell us.
No chance they are going to get back together. They don’t even speak & haven’t for 12 years. Not even a text or Christmas card are exchanged. Until that happens there’s no way Noel will have that much hassle around him now. He put up with it for 15 years & it’s now 15 years since the band played live and they haven’t been able to even have a conversation let alone touring again. ✌️👍✌️
It will take Peggy dying for them to reunite, but then one of them would probably not go to the funeral out of spite for the other, mind you direct cremation is available with no funeral @@Gavaldo
I'd always seen the last three songs as being the "cost" of his lofty dreams and escape from his life at the time. It would cost him true love and connection with his girl. She could not or would not follow him down his newfound path in life.
While I don't think Noel wrote these songs in order for this specific story I think maybe when ordering the album he liked the story they made by being in this order and stuck with it
Noel said “its about the angst of being a teenager in 1977” he was born 1967, so he would’ve been 10. Is he talking about the general punk explosion that happened around that time, and how cool it must’ve been to be a teenager? If so, I understand it that way.
What happened to the masterplan part 2, I understand if you aren’t proud of it or anything like that, I’m just curious because I really enjoyed the video and wanted to rewatch it but I can’t seem to find it now
Wonderful video, album track by track breakdowns are my favourite thing you do 🙂 Looking forward to Noel telling you you're off your rocker in a few weeks!

20:23 comments at this time now don’t fit since the release of the Sad Song demo from ‘92 with Liam on vocals.
Hey, but it’s just for fun and not an academic paper.
Is James talking himself into doing a rock opera The Who style based on Definitely Maybe and the b sides ?
Strongly agreed 👍 💯 with you james definitely maybe tells a story.
Now all we have to do is wait for a future Noel interview to make some comment on this, as I think he did on your What's The Story one!!!
So Poetic with Good Music.
Today I learned about Liam & Bonehead getting arrested for repeatedly shoplifting booze and trying to buy more booze at the bar with fake £50 notes 😂😂
Definitely Maybe is a definitive classic Oasis album, it's not worth having an album collection without it in my view, and without this album, there would have been no Oasis, and these videos would never have been made.
What happened to your video about What’s the Story?
Another great vid
this was amazing
especially the bit about the b-sides which i all love, now their meaning makes so much more sense
Cmon James! Making my Tuesday better here in the States
Glad to hear it 😎
I think noel is a freemason. Look at his ring and the symbolism on all their artwork. He's a magician. But I still love him
Sadly, I think you’re exactly right.
Can't be a freemason if you're an atheist, and Noel Gallagher has multiple times said he doesn't believe there's a God.
@polycube868 that's what a freemason would do
If they are inducted into this year's HOF, do you think there's a serious chance Noel and Liam will reunite?
Or Noel will just say "F**k that!"?
i dont think either of them care about the HOF, honestly.
@@ArenClegg I sincerely hope you're right!
Plottwist: Digsy was always the main character and the whole album is really all about him and lasagna metaphors
I'd always seen the last three songs as being the "cost" of his lofty dreams and escape from his life at the time. It would cost him true love and connection with his girl. She could not or would not follow him down his newfound path in life.
While I don't think Noel wrote these songs in order for this specific story I think maybe when ordering the album he liked the story they made by being in this order and stuck with it
You have to leave out columbia as according to all the original members say liam and chris wrote it noel only wrote 1 line.
brilliant james
Noel said “its about the angst of being a teenager in 1977” he was born 1967, so he would’ve been 10. Is he talking about the general punk explosion that happened around that time, and how cool it must’ve been to be a teenager? If so, I understand it that way.
Big Daddy James with another banger
‘Rock’n’Roll Star’ is so obviously their manifesto - ‘in my mind my dreams are real’.
Love Oasis lore ! absolutely hooked.
Banger alert 📢🚨
What happened to the masterplan part 2, I understand if you aren’t proud of it or anything like that, I’m just curious because I really enjoyed the video and wanted to rewatch it but I can’t seem to find it now
Needs re-editing due to some copyright issues - will be back up at some point
I may have to partially redo it, but will get to it at some point!
