Mitsubishi X-2 - A Short History of the Japanese stealth fighter prototype

The Mitsubishi X-2, formerly the ATD-X is a Japanese experimental aircraft and stealth fighter prototype. It was developed to test stealth fighter concepts for a possible Japanese fifth-generation jet fighter.

The X-2 is a technology demonstration aircraft designed to achieve both stealth and high-mobility. New technologies were demonstrated, such as stealth airframe shape, new composite structure, radar absorbent material, and high maneuver flight technology using the XF5-1 engine and thrust vectoring paddles.
The avionics, however, were limited to what was needed for maneuvering and did not include fire control systems, electronic warfare systems, advanced data link equipment, or weapons.
With the development of this aircraft, we have accumulated design and development technology domestically and passed on the technology to the next generation, demonstrating to people at home and abroad the option of developing the next fighter aircraft domestically.
Japan became the fourth country capable of developing manned stealth aircraft after the United States, Russia, and China, and this has improved its bargaining power when it comes to joint development with other countries.
