    • @titmusspaultpaul5
      @titmusspaultpaul5 4 года назад +1

      Yeah, me too. Classic artist use to do the dsme thing but they would hold their pencil up to the subject, usually a couple of foot away, and take measurements with the pencil (you see them in movies squinting and holding the pencil near their eyes looking at the subject) then transfer that to paper. This is just a much much easier way. Some people i see trace but i think using this tool or a pencil for measurments is the way to go for me at least....cheers.

  • @vickim6990
    @vickim6990 5 лет назад +1

    Good morning Rix. I like to work with carbon, charcoal and graphite. sometimes i build so much of all of them to get it super dark because i use a brush to smooth it that i cant get it to look smooth again. What should i do?

    • @RixCanDoit
      @RixCanDoit  5 лет назад

      Assuming the paper you are using is of the 'smooth' variety, and assuming you mean it looks blotchy, you can first try to remove the blotches with your kneaded eraser, and if that doesn't do it, you can darken between the blotches to match the tone of the blotches.

      Smooth paper, like Bristol smooth, and good technique. It takes practice. I had the same problem also once upon a time. Be sure to apply your graphite 'evenly', with a light touch. Then when you blend, also with a light touch to avoid digging into the paper, gently move the graphite/charcoal around.

    Can someone help please. Im new to drawing, and would really like to get into it more seriously. Where can i find quality drawing paper, pencils, erasers, etc? I live in a small town, so i dont believe there r any art shops in this area. Wouldnt think somewhere like walmart would have quality materials. Or would it b best to order offline? If anyone knows a place, or a good website to get these things from, please let me know. Help is really appreciated. Thanks

    I always wonder, if you're doin an exact size and like for like copy of a drawing like this one, whats the point usin the measurement tool and doing it like that, woukdn't it be easier to trace the main lines and then fill it in? just makes little sense is all, seems to waste alot of time

    • @RixCanDoit
      @RixCanDoit  3 года назад +1

      Sure, you can trace. I've done product reviews on trace boards that light up as one way to start a new drawing. For me personally, I like the challenge of measuring. It actually takes practice to do it right. It improves your ability to see shapes and sizes when you 'gauge' negative space and then confirm how close you were by measuring. I did a video on 'negative space' as well. Anything you can do to exercise your eye/mind for shapes and distances makes you better. The grid lines only act as reference points to gauge from.

      @@RixCanDoit Can i ask how you even start larning to do lifelike? I've seen people doing it (ALWAYS SPED UP.... WHY) and they can use like 8 deifferent pencils and shades of color in one TINY little area, like the tear duct. i'm always wonderin, how the hell do you know that's onna turn out the exact color you want... I'd think you'd kinda roughly put a base color across the entire drawin (if you're doin color) like the skin color, i'd think you color in the whole face if it was a head, then go ver that with a different shade in certain places, but they don't, they will almost go mictoscope mode on every tiny little place bit by bit... i just don't know how they can do it that way... it's way too precise for me!

    • @RixCanDoit
      @RixCanDoit  3 года назад +1

      I cannot answer for color. I'm not a color artist. In my case I build up 'tones'. While with color it is going to be this color or that, in graphite and charcoal it isn't about color, but about the intensity of the tone. You can see if two tones are the same or not. If you are drawing from an image, you simply increase the tone until it gets to be as close as the original.

      @@nameralashunI posted a video nearly two years ago and have since moved on to creating and uploading many, many more. A comment pops up with no context and says "Try black and white portraits in Google search. Omg". It was not made as a reply to any particular thread, so the question was "Was this a reply to someone's comment?" because it would seem really odd that you would suggest I don't know how to find black and white portraits when my videos clearly show I have no problem with that. It was your "Omg" that caught my attention. In my day, it was "Duh". So who is this girl talking about?
      Mean? No. Just really confused.
      Then you respond that you were directing that comment at me. And then directing me to some challenging portraits with wrinkles. Again, I'm confused. Where is this all coming from?
      Mean? No. Offended. No. Confused. Definitely.
      You write in small chunks without providing the full context or referencing what you were responding to. And you "OMG" it as well. How well do you think that phrasing translates to those of us who have been around much longer than you?
      Your incorrect assessment that I'm offended and then subsequent name-calling ("know-it-all") points to you being the sensitive one in this thread. I just think you ought to know that whoever's video you comment on you should try to be a little more clear.
