wow, this was truly insightful and probably one of the best videos on the subject I've ever watched. as soon as I have a buck to invest, I'll come back to check out your stuff, for sure. Great content.
Hey Scott! I love what you're doing and appreciate it very much! I've just started running my own record label to manage my little brother's dreams of becoming a singer. I don't have any budget to begin with and I don't have any management, business and music background. But I'm powering through! I would love it if you could share a bit on the business management and legal side of things like how do I keep my accounts, how do I approach a producer to work together, how to manage your company's money or even how to get money. Thanks a lot Scott for your time!
this is a really good video . i started my label in 2017 and never looked back. I love just hearing more information - *keep the videos coming - great content
Hi scott, ive been following youur channel for a few months , thanks for the videos! I hope I can start my own label in vietnam in the near future. :))
QUESTION ⁉️⁉️ so i wanna start a record label with a long time friend / artist that I've worked with. should i do a partnership or is there another way we should kickstart our label? what do you feel the blueprint should be in a situation like that. i know theres pros/cons to partnerships but if there's a way i could get that done successfully id do it in a heartbeat..
Yes, partnership would be best. Either 50/50 share of expenses and profits. Unless one of you does more then agree on a different split. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching! - Scott
Hi Jacque! In the course we talk about budget and revenue vs. expenses. We don't have anything specific on finding partners or financial backers. A lot of labels I've interviewed over the years have started out on a shoestring budget and grown at a more manageable pace. I've also talked to labels who are now very successful who have started out with $5000-$10000 of their own money or a loan from family. So that part of the business varies for a lot of individuals and maybe doesn't have the same approach as a tech start-up would. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching! -Scott
I took a look at the table of contents of your PDF, the big thing I was missing in the whole process was the actual production and creative process of recording an EP or Album. I see no mentioning of getting the best out of the artist / band creatively. What about talent development, the repertoire (what songs are good, what songs need work, what songs are not good enough etc.) I see no chapter that's about doing extensive pre-production or hiring a producer to get the best out of an artist. This is so important when you want to enter such a crowded market. The quality of the music should be front and center before you even talk about promoting and releasing it. The more attention to the actual art, the easier it is to gain and grow an audience, or not? (Maybe this is hard when your first band is your own or the band of a good friend... but I think having some outside ears that are not afraid to point out some weaknesses is crucial to raise the bar.)
is this good for a start: name: Rose's N' Red Entertainment (RNR ENT for short) type: International theme: Black, Red, Pink and White(+ a rose) things in my entertainment: Human singers, Virtual singers(vocaloid for example) :> SUB->VSNR(the Vocaloid- well VOXsynth) virtual holographic concert and mainly VOXsynth related
Should you call it a record label if you arn't making records? Or should you just call it a music label? In that case if you make records lp/ep / cd and streams etc.. should you call it a music label or is record label superior as long as you make records as the other formats are secondary?
Sorry to hear that. Can you send me an email and let me know what zip file you downloaded or what link you found it in and I can check on it. Thanks! podcast@otherrecordlabels.com
Great question, and one that varies depending on your country of origin and your region. Hopefully we can dive into that in a future episode! Thanks for being a subscriber! -Scott
Well I probably meant that I used myself and my music as a guinea pig artist for my new label. I didn't actually draw up a contract between myself and I. Although maybe not a bad idea in case the relationship turns sour. ;). Thanks for watching! -Scott
Great question, you may want to check with your lawyer or accountant. But I'm sure if you already have an entertainment company registered, that selling records could just be another income stream, and I would see no need to register an additional LLC. But don't take my advice, and ask a pro! Thanks! -Scott
What I'd like to know is how to get "catalog numbers"? Don't you need this to get royalties? So how do you make this thingie up? What good is your name, biz plan, logo, website, contracts and marketing if your label isn't recognized? I've watched a number of videos now and not one has brought this up, which I think should be important! Yes? No? 🤔
These are just internal numbers. You can make them up yourself. And you don't need them for distribution or royalty purposes. They are just meant to help keep your record label organized. They can use or be any catalog system that works for you!
I have an unsigned band that are going to press our own records because of all the bs and crap that goes with a label our band name is Genetic throwbacks yes great name for a record company GTS records got muitble bands and have the songs completed so wav file is needed no worrys got them -we own our masters and names ready to press thanks for a few tips but to much its simpler than you make out as long as you can fund it -thats wats its all about money best wishes -Davo of genetic throwbacks and electronic alliance and other's
Good question. If your business is registered than you would have to claim paying yourself as an expense and then claim the income from the label to yourself as personal income.
@@OtherRecordLabels hope you dont mind me following up with, how do I get the label to start making income? As far as funding a project? Personal money? Or what type of loan?
