Hey everybody, we missed an upload last week and our numbers started to plummet... but luckily at around the same time we started getting a little bit of splash-back from Kate Bush when her song 'Running Up That Hill' started to trend (thank you Stranger Things 4!), which bought us just enough grace to finish up this next upload....
Red Rubber Ball was written by Paul Simon and was quite a big hit for The Cyrkle, but their version feels a little tame to us... certainly when compared to the incredible live performance by Simon & Garfunkel on their album Old Friends. It was this version that we heard first, and it's still the definitive version for us, so it's our absolute pleasure to present our cover of this fantastic 60's song.
I (Mat) have floated this one as a potential candidate for every single album we've ever put out, so I'm over the moon to finally get it on a record, even if it's not the most well known or sexy song we could pick. There's something about the lean structure of it that's so appealing: it bounces along relentlessly and is done in what feels like a heartbeat, but it's densely packed with great lyric and chord choices, as well as possibly the greatest hook in history (slaps guitar)
Eagle-eyed viewers will notice that we've gone with a slightly different method of attaching the Neumann's to the mic stand this time: It's called the 'gaffer tape it because you forgot the mic clip' method, and will be expanded upon in our forthcoming course on how to more or less scrape by as a total chancer in the music business. The course is usually £5995, but for a limited time only we're offering it at just £35... so book your space on this incredible masterclass now and you too can be winging it through life by the skin of your teeth in no time at all.
Thanks so much for watching and supporting our stuff, we really appreciate it and we hope that this puts a little smile on your face.
Mat & Soph :)

The acoustic version sounds great! I saw The Cyrkle open for The Beatles in Boston in August of 1966. Bobby Hebb was a single act also on the bill. That 35 minute concert was the reason I went into music as a career, and I've never had one regret!
Oh wow, that must've been one hell of a night!
Thanks so much for watching - we're over the moon that you enjoyed this and thank you for a lovely comment :)

Hello there Victor! Thank you so much :)
This song is an early work written by the great Paul Simon!
Indeed it is, and a fantastic one, too!
I’m flying to Denver for a show checking out your videos for ideas for my own shows. You two are so good! Every performance is wonderful. This song was a hit when I was a kid, I only discovered recently Paul Simon wrote it.
Hey Soph & Mat!!! 🙌🙌🙌

Ah thank you so much Leeroy that's so kind of you :)
Glad you enjoyed this and thanks a million for watching xx
Awesome! Great job and nice harmonies! Love this song! 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much!!
Bravo 😊
This is beautiful. No complicated production, just two guitars and two voices in apparently effortless harmony.
Until this cover the only version of this I'd heard was The Seekers' and I thought their performance a bit too earnest, almost melancholic. As though the protagonist is trying to convince HIMSELF that everything's OK when it really isn't. It's hard to pinpoint why; maybe it's because the whole thing has a serious Country & Western vibe and there's no lift on the last line of the chorus until the very end of the song. Heck, maybe it's just me, but having now listened to a couple of other versions -- The Cyrkle, Simon & Garfunkel -- it works much better with the lighter, more upbeat tone.
I'm happy to say that after this "extensive research" yours remains my favourite version. 😉
(In the interests of completion I also checked out Cilla Black's cover. Good grief. Nothing against Cilla, but I'm afraid the overblown late 1960s orchestration reminded me of nothing less than Leonard Nimoy doing The Ballad Of Bilbo Baggins. So thanks for that interesting route to the most undesired of earworms.)
Hahaha! Oh no! So sorry to have sent you down that road 🤣
Wow, we actually didn't know there were so many versions of this - The Cyrkle and Simon&Garfunkel's are the only two wer were aware of until now! Thanks so much for the kind words and we're over the moon that you enjoyed this cover. We doubt that it'll do particularly well with the Algorithm, since it's not a hugely well-known song, but the people who know and love it like we do will get a kick out of it ;0
thanks a million for a lovely comment, Kev. Hope all's well with you and take care!! xx
Nice work on this. Support through Metal Head Hippie.
Hey there thank you 7 strings :)
Wow i didn't know simon and garfunkel did a version of this. I have to go hear it now. You guys really nailed this quirky old song haha. Love it.
Did you know Paul Simon actually wrote this one? I'm not sure if I mention it in the description... he's such a talented little sausage.
