- The fantail is one of New Zealand’s best known birds, with its distinctive fanned tail and loud twittering song, and particularly because it often approaches within a metre or two of people. Found in native bush and forest as well as suburban gardens the fantail feeds on insects caught in the air .
In Maori lore , piwakawaka is the Sky Dancer , the agent of laughter , the gaurdian of departed spirits and a kaitiake , or gaurdian , of the forest .

A couple years ago me and my girlfriend we on a walk through one of the national parks and a fantail followed us along singing to us for at least 45 minutes, it was absolutely magical
Beautiful birds, these little guys follow around people in parks because you kick up bugs for them to eat. IT WAS MANIPULATING YOU THE WHOLE TIME!
I had one 'follow' me yesterday. So beautiful.
Enduring happy memories of NZ. These little birds regularly came through our open sliding windows into our family room, did a couple of circuits and made off again. Missing NZ.
They are awesome little birds aren't they. I occasionally have one come into my house . I'm glad that they bring you happy memories. Thanks for watching 😁
Such beautiful wee birds. We have a particularly curious one that likes to fly inside our home and swing on our dream catcher. It's very chatty. It often comes and sits on the fence with us when we're outside
One came into my house yesterday, I thought it might not find it's way out so I guided it out the door and it promptly flew back in for a chat 😀 . They do seem to love company !
Them cheeky birds a?
They're the most cheeky birds and cute ones to
Not gonna lie, in maori culture thats a bad omen bro….
@@johnnyboy4145Stop, don't scare us. A fantail literally flew inside my window and I'm not even from NZ
Their eyebrows always make them look grumpy 🤣❤️
The original angry bird 😅
They are the cutest. There is a similar bird in Australia. Called Willie WagTails
Fantails always love my birdbath.
I love this bird call!
Me too ! Thanks for watching 😁.
Adorable lil critters 🐦⬛
This one came to my balcony today but my sparrow neighbour didn't like it.
This Manu is one of Tānes children it was placed on the ground at Pirongia - Waikato to represent the end of war in Aotearoa 🙏✨✨
lmao 😂
I thought i was the messenger of death, which is much cooler
@@fallenhope1They are messengers of death.
When one flies into our house we always shoo it out the front door. If it leaves flying out the window or any other exit points then we usually get news that day or the next that one of our extended but well loved family member has passed away. Although these are wonderful birds, some of my family members hate them bc of their irrational fears but I keep telling them they are harmless until they come into one of our homes and if that happens to gently guide them out the front door instead of panicking
@@katyngah-ere4942 thanks for the info! always nice to learn more about the maori culture x
I seen a fantail yesterday after work. It was flying so close to me and jumping around my feet. I didn't seem scared of me at all. They are my favorite kind bird by far
I love this dinosaur
Always come to this video when I get them in my house a nice and easy quick way to get them out the house haha they follow the sound, black ones u don't want tho means a bad message or bad luck only the colored ones means ur getting a visitor
Great idea , I never thought of doing that , I've had a few come inside my house lately. I'll try that next time 😀
have you ever seen a fantail without its tail flying? there is one at home that has no tail maybe it escaped the rat that only got its tail . It flys well and must be catching insects on the wing.
No I haven't , sounds like you might be right , something may have chomped it . Good to hear that it seems to be faring okay.
wow you were able to get really close, is this species normally this friendly with people?
These birds feed on little flying insects and when you are walking in the bush they will flit around you catching the tiny insects that you are displacing but I'm sure that on this occasion they were just being friendly 😁
@@TonyPalmer That's an interesting fact about how they eat. Thanks for sharing that.
Lovely birds! do you have a car?
Daww such a chatty little grumpy birb
Watching a female eating flies around my deck. She comes withinI reckon 4-5ft from me. They're so friendly. I know it's for food but hey. Waikato NZ
