    Third:
    In this episode...
    Time for another DIY Project, and this time, we are gonna make some slide out truck bed drawers!!.
    I have used large bins as storage up until now and this was fine and dandy, but why not add some usable space and bring the base of my truck bed up a little higher. With the way I use my truck, the height of the bed was being un used and space was a premium as far as surface area.
    Solution....Truck Bed Drawers!!!
    I saw many of these on the Tube, but wanted to give my simple and cost effective version that any of you can do at home with limited tools. Shout out to “Third Coast Craftsman” as his vid really helped me with these
    THAT IS THE KEY....LIMITED TOOLS.
    Some of these boxes you all make are amazing, and a lot of that depends on time put in, but also your resources to quality wood shop.
    I did this in my apartment garage with just a few power tools.
    Hope you all enjoy and please hit thumbs up and leave us a comment!!

    I will be building one of these soon. I will be using 3/4 ply on the entire build because of the over all lighter weight, strength, and the extra 1.5"+ of usable space saved (albeit small) in the drawer width, and to eliminate possible splitting of the solid wood stringers over time. When it comes to the side cubbie lids I will just double up the 3/4 ply on top for a ledger for the lids to sit on.

    • @SophisticatedRedneckery
      @SophisticatedRedneckery  2 года назад +1

      Sounds like a plan. I had a friend it do it that way and it was not sturdy enough to hold his gear on top and failed. Maybe going down to 5/4 on steingwrs would be a better option. I am loving mine. So much storage and solid as a tank!! Goood luck !!!

    Great job and wonderful video. Like you I’d love to get my kids involved in whatever project I’m working on. One thing I noticed is that the weak link with your drawer is the actual drawer fronts being screwed and from the front. Typically drawers are not constructed that way because the force of pulling the drawer open is 100% on the screw threads. Just a small detail I noticed! Thanks!

    • @SophisticatedRedneckery
      @SophisticatedRedneckery  3 года назад +2

      Hey Jason. I pre drilled the strips with a countersink bit just a bit. Then used the 5/8” small wood screws.
      I didn’t not attach my boxes to bed. They are heavy with all the stuff in them and the side panels hold it all in place.

    Awesome. You weren’t kidding about our builds being alike, but I like the differences. Is this for purely storage or would you sleep in it? Your side storage solution is very nice. For ours, we decided on boxes because we both sleep on top. It was nice that you got to show the whole process too. With ours, we built it years ago and weren’t rebuilding it for a video LOL. Also, good fathering skills 😊.

      I did not anchor mine down as I wanted to try without first. It has been great. Only time I hear it love is when I hammer a bump in road. But it is heady loaded down with stuff. The drawers have enough weight in them they rarely move. I built them so they are within 1” of tailgate when it’s closed so they won’t move more than that if i slam on breaks etc.
      I have been very happy with them. They are loaded up with tools and a jack etc. still slide great but not too easily.

      Consider a 1/2” rubber “horse stall mat” for the top… grippy but holds up super well over time… and no messing around with FlexSeal.

    Why did you paint with Flex Seal?

      I asked too soon! No to flex seal

      @@syked-upadventures6019 haha. Yeah. Had another person use it and I get the purpose but...just didn’t work out. It did waterproof the top boards so that’s good but needed a better finish. Much better now.

      You should be able to grab them at any big box store or hardware store. They would be in the hardware isle.

    Good video but can you at least give a shoutout in the comments to the "Third Coast Craftsman".... You legit made his drawers in a video he posted a couple years back. You changed it and did good but in the box down below you could just throw his tag in there.

      Yeah. Def will. He does great work. Seems we are all making the same drawers now. Only so many ways you can do it.

      @@SophisticatedRedneckery agreed I'm not saying you couldn't or didn't come up with your own ideas but it's just close enough it would seem better of you just added something like some inspiration came from .... Just a respect/integrity thing

    2 HEAVY - Your best bet is purchase an aluminum- Not worth doing this. Your truck will sag- and your gas will SUCK

      Has worked great for over a year now! Truck runs great without any noticeable difference. Storage is amazing especially when towing the boat! Highly recommend to anyone who can’t afford a deckit style system!

    Hey from the uk. Just purchased a new works van and I’m going to build a raised floor at the rear doors. I’m definitely going to build them this way. Great video. How are the drawers holding up now ?
    Thanks

    How did you get the shapes around the bed for the side pieces?

    • @SophisticatedRedneckery
      @SophisticatedRedneckery  3 года назад

      Hey B. I just scrolled the side backwards ans cut with jig saw. So basically used the side bed to trace the lines. Then just cut and tweak.

      Hey Rob from UK! The drawers are holding up great ans I beat the crap out of them. Through heavy weights on them etc! The only thing I would add is glue the drawer fronts and screw as they take the brunt of the abuse! But overall. Sooooo happy with them.

      Sounds a good plan. I will also use glue.
      Thanks again
