The New Chess Masters (Tunde Onakoya) | DLD 24

Tunde Onakoya is a chess master and teacher from Nigeria. In this touching, personal DLD24 presentation, he shares his story of growing up in poverty and finding chess at a young age.
Tunde recalls how chess gave him an intellectual identity and helped him get an education, as he was able to earn scholarships to represent his schools in tournaments.
He now runs Chess in Slums in Africa, a non-profit that uses chess to educate children across Africa - so far, more than 10,000. One of them is Ferdinand, a differently-abled boy from the largest floating slum in Nigeria who excelled at chess and is now preparing for an international tournament despite facing challenges with his cerebral palsy.
Tunde Onakoya’s goal is to give the gift of chess to at least one million African children, helping them develop critical thinking and providing opportunities for a better life.
