  • "Too hot to handle: how the voice of Black and Minority Ethnic NHS staff is neither listened to nor acted upon - and what NHS Boards can do to change this."
Middlesex University Business School is delighted to announce the first of series of webinars discussing critical ideas around culture and leadership in healthcare.
These webinars will showcase work done by researchers from Middlesex and other institutions that explore key concepts of leadership, culture, equity and the implications for both the NHS treatment of its workforce and the provision of safe and effective patient care. The webinars take place at a time when there is both a growing recognition that culture and equity are crucial issues for the NHS and serious challenges in making the progress needed.
The first webinar will feature Joy Warmington and Roger Kline, who will be launching the first ever substantial report on the failure of the NHS to provide a safe and effective means of listening to and addressing concerns raised by Black and Minority Ethnic staff. The report, entitled Too Hot to Handle, was prompted by several NHS Employment tribunal race discrimination cases during 2023, notably that won by Michelle Cox which highlighted the shortcomings of the current means of addressing concerns raised. Their report draws on lessons from those cases. A staff survey ( Sept 2023 - www.brap.org.uk ) commissioned specifically to explore how people experience progress on race equality within the NHS, highlights the obstacles faced within organisations, that exacerbate racism and inhibits it from being effectively addressed. The report includes recommendations for NHS employers and some for trade unions in an environment where race discrimination remains embedded.
The issues being covered in this series of webinar are a prelude to the Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) being launched in September 2024 which will be especially focussed on leadership and culture in healthcare.
