I don't even remember what movie it was in but I distinctly remember the line, "Are you a MexiCAN or a MexiCANT?" Whether Tex was making a reference, just came up with it on his own, or repeated it from somewhere, I don't know. I'm sure many fans of the mobile (sic) combat single house disposal bin have also said that over the past few decades.
Edit: In case you don't know who Tex is, he's another content creator with some very popular BattleTech content. He also enthusiastically endorses other related channels including this one. Just search for "Tex Talks Battletech" and clear your schedule. He presents his massive lore dumps as in character lectures from a grizzled old mercenary from the Periphery who is now semi-retired as an Inner Sphere History professor. Very entertaining and informative.

@@juangalton999 I also got hooked when I was 12, but that was from the Saturday morning cartoon during it's original airing in 1994. Looking back on it now, that cartoon is absolutely terrible. Laughably so. They didn't really try explaining the massive amount of setting lore as it was targeted at kids so there was not much point. Even though they DO get most of the lore that gets mentioned correct, it's presented in an absolutely basic and direct way that causes most discussions between Clan and FedCom individuals male a typical on camera dialogue between professional wrestlers seem subtle and nuanced by comparison. And I'm not talking about the good ones with charisma, like The Rock and Chris Jericho or any number of current top level performers. I'm talking about a large man in a ridiculous getup pointing at another large man who shops at the same fashion outlets and shouting a really stupid catch phrase, as was traditional back in the eighties. Except one of them has a bunch of glowing green facial tattoos. And that doesn't even get into how the artists had no sense of perspective. One guy ejects from his mech, lands in a tree, tangled parachute and all, then jumps down and suddenly looks to be taller than the tree when he stands up. The same characters standing next to the same mech in one shot appear to be as tall as it's knee and then in another shot ten seconds later the mech's foot is taller than they are and nothing has moved. What appear to be Overlord class dropships (which are about the size of a small city block and carry a full battalion [36] of mechs) are frequently shown with mechs half as tall as the dropship marching out of hangar doors that take up an entire side of the hull. And the bad guys somehow kidnap the entire population of a planet in the time it takes the hero to walk back from a fight where both his and the villain's mechs got trashed.
But it got me interested enough to buy Mechwarrior 2 for PC and get into the novels (which are usually much better written...usually). So it worked.

You'd get your first look at the 30-ton Trash Can as you move into an intersection. But the Urbie, he knew you were there a long time ago. He moves like a heavy mech: stompy, bobbing his head. And you keep still because you think, maybe, with his cheap Periphery Radar he'll lose you if you don't move. But, no. Not the UrbanMech. You stare at him, and he just stares back. That's when the attack comes - not from the front, no - from the side. From the other two Urbies you didn't even know were there.
UrbanMechs are a pack-hunter, you see, he uses coordinated attack patterns and he's out in force today. And he fires at you with an Imperator AC, a 12-ton Anti-Mech weapon, like a sledgehammer, on the right arm. They don't bother to go for the cockpit, like a Hunchback; they just shoot here - in the center torso, and here in the leg. Or, maybe, across the gyro, spilling you across the tarmac.
Point is: you're alive when they start to eat you.

My friend Bill had a junker like that in high school. We joked that his collection of Billy Joel CDs in the center column were worth more than the car. It was old, busted, and had bits hanging off of it. He would leave it parked with the windows open and the keys ignition, DARING somebody to steal it because the insurance claim would get him a better car. Yeah, that sounds like an Urbie.
Or another dude, a very large young man (played nose tackle on the football team) who's grandma or something bought him a car when he turned 16. It was a Pinto. I'm not certain, but I think he might have had to cut out part of the back seat to get the driver's seat far enough back that he could fit inside the thing. Dude would drive past and you'd do a double take wondering if you had just glimpsed a clown car being driven by a four hundred pound gorilla in a varsity letter jacket. I'm pretty sure it was still faster than an Urbie.

The way I see it the UrbanMech is one of the few realistic mechs in the entire BattleTech universe. It fights in an environment where other vehicles would struggle. Having legs make it slower than a wheeled or tracked vehicle (physics are real after all). It's big gun is suited for ambush work and infantry support. It's main job would be destroying fortified positions.

But to explain why I myself enjoy the mech, I like the UrbanMech because I tend to like an underdog. It’s not an exciting or flashy or pretty ‘Mech, but it’s functional in the set of circumstances it was intended to be in. That said, I do think some of the variants make very odd choices, especially the ones that come later on and use higher tech stuff. Some of them seem more like variants for the sake of variety (FASA/whoever owns them now problem most likely) rather than well-thought-out design choices. I think it’s possible to upgrade the mech but keep it fairly cheap and not lose what makes the mech what it is.

I had 20 engine hits, so I had zero functional heatsinks, my armor was shot, and my next AC20 shot would very likely shut my mech down from heat. I took that last shot at a barely hit wolverine, pierced right into the wolverine's srm cache, and took him down with me. The hunchback also carries twice as much ammo, even in the old podunk 3025 base model. Later iterations on it (at least based on the original loadout) don't really do much aside from upgrading the lasers to pulse or ER versions, doing the same with the autocannon (ultra/LB-X), and adding more ammo with most of weight saved by things like endosteel structure and ferro-fibrous armor. Because when you get something right the first time, all you really need are some basic upgrades on the same sort of gear. I'm personally fond of the 5S model, which has pulse lasers and an SRM-6 on top of the standard big gun and armor (it also has jump jets).

After years of playing the MechWarrior and MechCommander games, I finally started getting into the Battletech tabletop. I appreciate all the hard fun work you do, MechFrog, for the fun and informative videos.
I love the Urbanmech not for what the 500-ish BV 1.4mill C-Bill trash can it is, but the Trash can I think it could be. I found it to be very beginner-friendly as my first foray into constructing my first Battle mech configuration from scratch; being critical and identifying the strengths and weaknesses of a particular mech chassis, then allowing me space to create something for myself - personalizing, making something my speed - I guess I owe this mech a lot for loving the game more than I ever thought I could.
It was with this mech that I perused through my tech manual, learned and applied the math, and built my first Urbie in case my friends and I have newbie-friendly 4-player Urbie-Derby matches.
Below, I will be sharing my first attempt at a build ~ 900BV. It may look boring, but I enjoy it a lot when employing the extended torso twist and the low/narrow profile quirks from the chassis that this has. Thank you, Battletech community.
And thank you, Urbanmech, for being a clutch little piece of trash.

I've had great success with the Trashcan. When used right. Each time, it's been when I was given a certain BV to buy mechs, and I'm in a city. I can field nearly a company of the little waddlers for the cost of an Atlas. In literally any other situation, it's a target worth laughing at. I mean, the name says it all. If it isn't a dense urban environment, or dealing with ground pounders, it's a waste of resources. I've got the sheet for a modded one to this day. All Machine Guns, flamers and small lasers. In our home game cannon, it was stationed on Hesperus to deal with Union strikes. It was dubbed, "The War Crime".

If you ask me it’s made fun of with names like “trashcan” for a reason. We all know it’s a bad mech, but lots of us have what I like to call the urby story. The urby story is where the little guy was fielded on TT or on a computer game where it did something it really shouldn’t have been able to do. For example cockpit critting an atlas turn 1 in my case.

    • @mbr5742
      @mbr5742 3 дня назад

It is not a bad mech if used right, at least in the time frame it was designed (3025). This is the mech equivalent to the Cold War KaJaPa. 25to tracked vehicle with a (at the time of creation) solid 90mm gun (same as the M48A2 and A3 tanks of the same period). That beast would hide in ambush and go for the sides/back. Or the supply convois (M3 Bradleys make nice escorts. IF they can get the first shot with their TOW out. If not - well to quote a certain cute Tiefling: FIREBALL!(1) )
Same with Urbies. They hide, the sneak, they know that city and it's sewers. Urbie sized sewers. Where your big, fat Dragon or Black Knight can not go. If you send in your Wasps/Stingers/Locusts - well they can not take an AC/10 round all that well (Locust can in the chest - barely). In a proper environment expect a plate you overlooked to slide away and an Urbie come out on his JumpJets firing at your rear like a Tarantula from the Terran Trade Authority setting. They have eyes everywhere. That tell them when to show up over hardwired telefones. That stand by to fill that AC/10 round sized hole in your chest with a nice Inferno rocket. Their AC/10 needs little power so they hide with reactors on low power. In urban camo paint. The first thing you see of them is when the slowly swivel their torso around. The last thing you see in your rear view mirror is when they slowly swivel their torso around. And then the AC/10. From 30m. Into your rear.
      (1) Thankfully for the Bradleys it was only an excercise

  • @liljenborg2517

For a lark, we did a mission of my 2 mostly medium lances vs a whole company of Urbies. One Urbie got our blackjack with a hit to the back that lit the ammo. But even then, because damage is simultaneous, the blackjack took out the AC-10 of a second Urbanmech with its medium lasers (that had missed its own shot - a glass canon with no canon is just glass). Otherwise it was a total wipe.
We found the Urbie to be a pretty ineffective mech. As an “ambush predator” it rarely got off more than one shot before getting smashed, even in two or three-on-one situations. 10 points of damage an leave a pretty big crater in any location’s armor, but, unless you’re lucky enough to hit the same location with other mechs, most mechs, even an URBIE, can take a few 10-point hits. All mechs lighter than an Urbie can escape if the Urbie can’t knock it down on the first hit, many mechs larger than an Urbie can survive the 10 damage and get away, or turn and smash the little guy. Any mech 50-tons or more can nearly kick the leg off an Urbie.
The real fun was when we then did an Urbie on Urbie fight. That was a bit more fun, because it was the only thing an Urbanmech was truly effective against was another Urbanmech.

Ah, the Urbie. To quote Tex (Black Pants Legion): "The memes. Oh, God, the memes." The Urbanmech will forever be known as the little trash can that could. As for the AC/20 variant, well... To quote Tex again: "Because what's funnier than a trash can that cores an assault mech in a surprise attack?" For my money, one of the best variants is the UM-R27. It's not terribly expensive as it only has two tech tricks. Enhanced actuators and CASE. This coupled with three SRM 6's makes this Urbie pretty good at shooting fast targets. Indeed, the UM-R27 is a decent weapons platform to deal with those pesky Savannah Masters.

people always forget that the urbanmech is never meant to operate alone.. it's meant to be supporting a mix of infantry and vehicles. it's an assault gun, the StuG of battlemechs. on the offensive it's meant to blow up defensive hardpoints and buildings stopping the infantry, on the defensive its meant to be a mobile pillbox able to put some hurt on enemy mechs and tanks.

  • @Andrewlik
    @Andrewlik 5 дней назад +2

    He round and adowable :3
Serious answer, the urbanmech is the Bidoof or the Cirno of the battletech franchise. Adorable small dumb goober that is given near deity status by the fanbase for comedic effect. It punches above its weight and feeble stature, leading to it feeling like an underdog in any situation it is fielded in, and everyone loves an underdog story. Yes, a good force will simply out maneuver it or snipe it outside of range. But its like a pawn in chess: objectively the weakest in alot of cases, but a good commander will make the maximum use out of it possible.
Also an urbanmech might be a bit of a morale booster for backwater garrisons where having a mech, ANY mech, feels like something they can use. Its just big enough to "require" an armored response, which in alot of cases is all you need it to be.
    Is it a good mech?
No. "Okay" or "niche choice, but good for its niche" for some variants as they may be the cheapest way to get X or Y big weapon on a unit, the urb 63 is the cheapest by BV LB10X unit outside of field gun infantry which might not be allowed at your local table. The Arrow IV urbanmech is both hilarious and also the cheapest Arrow IV mech as well.
    We love urb

Some time go I shared a story about an Urbie, the last mech standing, which DFA'd two nearly pristine enemy assaults on a jungle map - pushed one off the map, the other one off a cliff headfirst - and broke both his legs in a process of winning the game in the dumbest way possible.
Now I have a story from my BT gaming group. Or rather, a report on a ludicrous trend.
There's a lot of Urbie memes in my group. We know they're nothing special and underwhelming, at least on paper, but it's never not funny to take one if you have some spare points left. It got to a point where the two most experienced players, who basically run the local steadily growing BT community, almost always use Urbies in introductory games for new players. Not just for the sakes of a (somewhat overused) meme, but also to, hypothetically, give the newbies (who also get to use much better machines worth more BV) a fair chance to win their first game. But those stupid trashcans overperform EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. How? AC20 headshots. Through armor crits. Blown off limbs. Destroyed joints. You name it, they did it. In many games, sometimes during multiple games in one day. It's beyond bananas.
There's no point to find here. There's only the laughter of dice gods.

Rolled 12, hit head. Rolled 8 or 9, one critical hit. Rolled 4, destroyed cockpit. My little Urbie hollowed out the cockpit of a medium mech at long range. The other player hunted down and killed the Urbanmech pilot, but it was a glorious few seconds for him or her.

The range on that snub-nose means it can almost always contribute to the fight, the absurd amount of armour, +2TMM and low price means it's hard to knock it out without over-comitting, and (unlike most urbies) it's juuust fast enough to keep up with the assault mechs you'd want to support with it.
jokes back to front: It even has a little emotional support laser in case infantry shows up.

Then, we got a mission to destroy a base at the end of a valley. Our "intel" led us to believe we would face a lance of heavies and some turrets. Instead, we faced 3 lances of Urbanmechs armed with PPCs or LRMs, sniping at us from extreme ramge from the steep ridges on either side of the valley.
Only one of us had the jump jets to close quickly.
