Back in the late 90s, I would rent just about any Konami game I saw. Seriously, all the games I played of theirs were quality titles!!! The good old days.
So many creative bosses, so many creative stages... The stage with the dumpster full of broken bosses will always be my favorite. This is a shmup done masterfully.
Konami was king when this was released. Metal gear Solid, This game, Castlevania SOTN, and many other games for PS1......I guess they blew all of their load at one time because they could use some of this magic now
Incredible music. The boss theme in particular reminds me of the boss music from Megaman X5. I can't understand why this brilliant game was a Gaiden and not the future of the series.
Glorious game. My second favourite in the series, after Gradius II. The only thing that holds it back a little is the overabundance of mechanical enemies and bosses and, accordingly, the lack of organic and fantasy-themed creatures.
My god... So many years and I didn't know of this masterpiece. Is probably the BEST gradius in the series.. Silly me, I thought Treasure kicked the ass of Konami with Gradius V but, man this one ...... *sniff* *sniff** is a masterpiece.... :`)
What a good Gradius game this really was back in the day. But looking back ... this one beats Gradius 3 and Gradius 4 in my book. Gradius 3 just rehashes allot from Gradius 1, 2 and Salamander while Gradius 4 rehashes from Gradius 1, 2 and 3 ... just throwing in 3d Objects. All the while this game ... takes either completely _new_ ideas or ... puts a unique twist to old Levels(the Gravity Well that eats the Mountain Stage that appears in every Gradius) ... all the while it's graphics held up *very* well ... still looks great!
There was the 3 Parodius games on the snes, a Parodius on the nes (may have been 2…plus Gradius 1,2 and life force on the nes/famicom. And the sfc/snes Gradius 3. Then rebirth on the wii. Also nemesis on the game it and Gradius on the gba is pretty awesome. I wish they’d rerelease Gaiden, rebirth and galaxies.
Que macizo esta el Gradius Gaiden, ya había escuchado que era uno de los mejores. Pero también está excelente el Gradius V PS2 luego el Gradius lll y Gradius IV
Konami also made these four playable star ships as Monster Cards in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. Vic Viper, Lord British Spacefighter, Jade Knight, and Falchion B (Beta).
Same reason why Konami didn't bring the Gradius Deluxe Pack, Salamander Deluxe Pack and TwinBee Deluxe Pack outside Japan. By that time, they simply didn't have faith in shoot 'em ups doing well outside Japan. It was pretty miraculous that at least the Parodius Deluxe Pack did make it outside Japan (but only to Europe, with the North American release being cancelled). What's more ilogical is why this game never made it to the Sega Saturn, when all the aforementioned Deluxe Packs and also the other Parodius titles and the Konami Antiques MSX Collection (which did have several MSX shoot 'em ups) did make it to the Sega Saturn alongside the PlayStation. This was the only shoot 'em up that Konami released exclusively to the PlayStation while not making it to the Sega Saturn, even if it was afterwards.
The best we got was the version in the Gradius Collection for the PSP. It's a crime that neither Konami or ACA hasn't put this on any of the newer consoles. This deserves to be played on a larger screen that the PSP.
easily one of the best shumps. no others have this much soul. others can be high quality but it always seems like a generic or manufactured type of high quality. and others can just be way too over the top
WOW! I always loved the Gradius games, but this one takes the cake. could never really play them because they just too ass-tardedly fucking hard, and I wound up chucking the controller, so watching these long plays is a chance for me to actually see past Stage 2.
No, Konami copyrighted the Salamander name, and for a while I and a few friends thought that Konami and M2 would follow up on Gradius Rebirth with Salamander Rebirth. Sadly this never came to fruition and the game has never happened. Instead Konami continued on with a Contra and Castlevania Rebirth and it looks like the Salamander game got canned.
How this is not a Japanese PSOne Classic on PSN I have no idea. Yes, I know it is available as part of Gradius Collection, but I do not own a PSP. I want to play this on my PS3!
The old days of Konami when they cared now they're faded into distance just like alot of video game brands. They lose their mantra, will and money and greed take over and are hated by their fans. After Gradius V, we'll never another version except an indie clone or a fan made variant..Atleast there's still R-Type and Darius franchises just sigh..
"Close your eyes...use your head..." OOOPPSS!...wrong shmup series, LOL! (if you really know about Taito, you'll get the joke!) anyways, astounding gameplay as always, Valis AKA Keeper Of The Sword!
As awesome as the PS1 was, us Americans could have used more shooters on it. Sony of America skipped us over on this game, Zanac X Zanac, and Darius Gaiden. Jerks!!!!
Of course there are! There's Gradius Collection (Gradius 1 and 2), Salamander Collection (Salamander, Life Force and Salamander 2) and in the Konami MSX collection you can find the ports Nemesis 1, 2 and 3 plus Salamader and Paroudius as well!
What's up with the backgrounds Konami? Every Gradius game has barely to no backgrounds lol. So lame, Last Resort, a game that came 5 years before this crap has much better backgrounds
Remember those days when Konami was one of the cool guys in Gaming? This was the proof
@Hunter6213 then blamed the gamers when their sad attempt at using his IP for a cash grab failed.
Back in the late 90s, I would rent just about any Konami game I saw. Seriously, all the games I played of theirs were quality titles!!! The good old days.
@Hunter6213 and since they sue both Japanese and non-Japanese rhythm games.
@Hunter6213 oh how far the mighty have fallen!
before the 3D konami was the Queen
So many creative bosses, so many creative stages... The stage with the dumpster full of broken bosses will always be my favorite. This is a shmup done masterfully.
Have you ever played Super Hydorah by locomardito?
The music is excellent.
man, what an awesome game, I'd love to play it. That second stage that's full of the still-active remains of old bosses, too... awesome stuff!
Konami was king when this was released. Metal gear Solid, This game, Castlevania SOTN, and many other games for PS1......I guess they blew all of their load at one time because they could use some of this magic now
Unless you're a DanceDance Revolution fan (and that is a reach in itself)
this game is the only one which still holds up today. at the end, metal gear and castlevania are just games you liked when you were young
I agree that metal gear solid's gameplay has aged poorly but I think Sotn is still pretty great.
yeah its alright, though it feels more like a generic platformer. definitely agree that metal gear is far more overrated though.
Konami rocks too in a lot of consoles, them can still rocks now, just give them time :-)
Gradius Gaiden is the 2nd best gradius game.
The moai head boss have such a hilarious death sound.
I think this game definitely had the best level design out of all of the series.
Konami just rocks. Music, gameplay.. man, what a great title this is
MrCageman Amazing game! 👍😎
Just like Castlevania Symphony of the Night uses the same soundfont as Gradius Gaiden. Both are released at the Same Year (1997).
*rocked
yeah, thats past tense, bro. they suck hard now.
Konami meant quality back in those days!!!!
Incredible music. The boss theme in particular reminds me of the boss music from Megaman X5. I can't understand why this brilliant game was a Gaiden and not the future of the series.
Light In The Attic is releasing a double vinyl soundtrack!
Glorious game. My second favourite in the series, after Gradius II. The only thing that holds it back a little is the overabundance of mechanical enemies and bosses and, accordingly, the lack of organic and fantasy-themed creatures.
The music is absolutely fantastic...
In this series it always is though
Well, that was entertaining to watch. You have some legendary playing skills there.
Fantastic job.
Best Gradius ever made! 🔥
My god... So many years and I didn't know of this masterpiece. Is probably the BEST gradius in the series.. Silly me, I thought Treasure kicked the ass of Konami with Gradius V but, man this one ...... *sniff* *sniff** is a masterpiece.... :`)
I'd sure like to play this game sometime... Gotta love those classic Konami Moai Statues with the Ripple Beam!
Konami always had great soundtracks and special effects.
'You think you can beat me with that, loser?" Moai Twins
Then when you defeat them, you can say I JUST BEAT YOU WITH THAT... LOSER!!!!!
"Urgh..." -Moai twins
What a good Gradius game this really was back in the day. But looking back ... this one beats Gradius 3 and Gradius 4 in my book. Gradius 3 just rehashes allot from Gradius 1, 2 and Salamander while Gradius 4 rehashes from Gradius 1, 2 and 3 ... just throwing in 3d Objects.

My second favorite space shooter game
This is definitely the more organic-alien and more friendly version of Einhander
My god what an awesome choice for a longplay. I imported this game from Japan ages ago when it came out in 97. Great times.
Play this again. Loop 2. Heaven Core will face you in the Boss Rush.
omg....
You're also Moai become quads and Booster core side must be avoided as well.
man, the music was SOLID
This is one of my favorite Gradius games
"That doesn't hurt"
-- a plant
"You think you can beat me with that? Loser." - Moai Statue
Kei Nanjo aka Easter Island head.
"THAT DOESN'T HURT..."
- - Giga's Rose
"That doesn't hurt"
// Dead*
@@JoeyLamontagne Then you can say HA! I JUST BEAT YOU WITH THAT!!! LOSER!!!!!
Ahh yes, i used to play this on my PsP
Also up there in terms of boss design. This was an all-around good game.
I run all four Gradius Gaiden ships and Delta Tri as part of my Yugioh deck.
That reminds me, I need to search for someone that has a Gradius deck in a video gameplay of one of the Yu-Gi-Oh! games. I would like to see that.
Dat Speed! on Stage 9!
And also the music.
If you are a Nintendo fan and never played any of the Gradius game's . Then you definitely need to try it . It's a lot of fun .
The first one came out on NES. I think more came out on snes and there was one rebirth one on wii
There was the 3 Parodius games on the snes, a Parodius on the nes (may have been 2…plus Gradius 1,2 and life force on the nes/famicom. And the sfc/snes Gradius 3. Then rebirth on the wii.

Stage 7-- a typical humdrum volcano stage...
*GRAVITY BEND BEHIND YOU*
*stage is destroyed by black hole*
What the @#*? !!!!!!
That was cute how that boss of Stage 6 died. Shriveled up and fell off.
really loved stage 7! Nice longplay!
I always loved how the junk planet had bosses from gradius 3
This game is more Gradius IV then the Gradius IV arcade version on PS2
warlockguy42 How so? Was there something wrong with Gradius IV?
EnigmaHood No the arcade version on ps2 felt way different than Gradius IV on GBA
warlockguy42 Maybe the GBA version was the one that wasn't true to the arcade version.
EnigmaHood-_-
warlockguy42 What?
I love this game!
Konami, we need Gradius Collection right now!! ;)
Destroy The Core!
Stunning job.thank you so much ...
Este es de los mejores gradius de todos el mejor me encanta el juego y tiene mejor musica 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Konami also made these four playable star ships as Monster Cards in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. Vic Viper, Lord British Spacefighter, Jade Knight, and Falchion B (Beta).
Why this game never saw a North American or PAL (Europe/Oceania) release is beyond me. It would’ve been perfect localization fodder.
Same reason why Konami didn't bring the Gradius Deluxe Pack, Salamander Deluxe Pack and TwinBee Deluxe Pack outside Japan. @@CricketDynamo720 At least emulation is a thing but I agree.
I love gradius Gaiden
easily one of the best shumps. no others have this much soul. others can be high quality but it always seems like a generic or manufactured type of high quality. and others can just be way too over the top
No, that's Brain Golem. And how I heard that quote was "I hope to be entertained."
WOW! I always loved the Gradius games, but this one takes the cake. could never really play them because they just too ass-tardedly fucking hard, and I wound up chucking the controller, so watching these long plays is a chance for me to actually see past Stage 2.
This have better stage music then gradius galexies

@MasterRBertLink
Yes. I believe it's DLC for the various systems.
Sadly they don't make games like this anymore
Konami doesn’t, but there are a lot of great new shmups ovee the last 5 years
Gradius Gaiden. Best one.
Darius Gaiden. Best one.
Interesting coincidence. 😅
Good work , damn this is a fine game .
How this is not a Japanese PSOne Classic on PSN I have no idea. Yes, I know it is available as part of Gradius Collection, but I do not own a PSP. I want to play this on my PS3!
Toda una belleza de juego es genial

It'd be cool if there was a special attack where you'd call picard from star trek and he clears the screen of enemies. "make it so"
fun,good game
Can you imagine a crossover of two series? Gradius and Strike Witches or Gradius and Sky-Girls.
that would be awesome. but meanwhile gradius has crossed over with sky girl already.
all gradius games are fun
Purple plane has the best laser

The brain enemy what are you doing here dragon quest
I has seeing this game's power item another game.
17:03 Wow, trash-talking Moai heads!
_Night at the Museum_ vibes? 🗿
Fantastic game, love Salamander 2 as well. But my favourite is Gradius 3 on snes:)
Konami were great in past times. Now this greatness has disappeared into nowhere, many series are forgotten, nothing interesting is created.
Can you guys imagine a crossover between two series? Gradius and Touhou Project.
+Samanosuke2727 That would be pretty awesome too.
very challenging game!!!
Otomedius!
Apparently, I've been missing all of the great PSX games. :|
Frikin awesome game
GRADIUS GAIDEN FOR SEGA SATURN 1998 KONAMI
Should have done. It was really odd it wasn't.
EXCUSE ME!!! Where's Heaven's Gate (the TRUE final boss of the Boss Rush)?
Purple jet is the best one among the 4
To me it's the real Gradius 4.
The arcade game we got was kinda underwhelming (and too "classic") for a proper sequel to 3.
As awesome as the PS1 was, us Americans could have used more shooters on it. Sony of America skipped us over on this game, Zanac X Zanac, and Darius Gaiden. Jerks!!!!
Not have Loop 2 ?
35:22 This unironically sounds like Mangle’s sounds in FNAF2.
can you do longplay on gradius III and IV: Gradius IV?
Nice game this port should be renamed gradius gaiden+ When konami made a saturn version
I've been hearing about a game called " Salamander ReBirth " on some webpages devoted to Gradius. Is this game real?
There was an upgrade with green circles coming out of you which was very powerful? Where is that?
AreoTaco
In Otomedius Gorgeous I guess, Esmeralda was such extremedly OP
AreoTaco Round Laser. It's only used for Jade Knight.
This game would have been much better if it was produced for the Saturn!
Is there any Gradius games for the Sega Saturn?
Of course there are!
There's Gradius Collection (Gradius 1 and 2), Salamander Collection (Salamander, Life Force and Salamander 2) and in the Konami MSX collection you can find the ports Nemesis 1, 2 and 3 plus Salamader and Paroudius as well!
+Andrea Celauro Wow. Thanks.😀

Cool.
