TRANSCRIPT:
hey I'm replacing the chain on my bike here and I thought I would do a quick comparison. right here have a used SRAM pc 1051 that I took off my bike sometime ago and just kind of kept it as a backup. this one here is a kmc x10 that I've been running and I just took off few minutes ago off the bike and I'm replacing it with a brand-new one, upgrading to a brand-new kmc x10 SL gold and I wanted to do a quick comparison here tosee if there's an actual weight difference and if so is it is it worth the extra cost. so turning on the gram scale here let's go with the SRAM pc 1051. as you can see
here it weighs in at about 250 grams. now this is cut to length as it was on my bike, this is not the full length as it was out of the package. this has been a good chain but i will say it did wear out rather and surprisingly quickly and it was in need of a replacement I don't remember how many miles I got out of it but it was in need of replacement way sooner than I would have expected, which kind of disappointed me about that. I have used some of the more expensive, higher-end chains in the past specifically the 1071 which has hollow pins - basically the same chain with hollow pins and it did seem to provide quite a bit longer service life. this kmc x10 I was extremely pleased with. Oh back to this one by the way this I think I got this one on ebay for about twenty dollars usually they're roughly I think 25 to 27 on ebay and slightly upwards of thirty dollars at retail price and your local bike shop. this one here i got for twenty dollars on ebay as well. I was extremely pleased with it it shifted well and it provided an exceptionally long service
life and put quite a few miles on it, some of them are really harsh in harsh conditions, sand and so on and it just seemed to go on and go on. its really got some kind of tough anti-wear coating on it like they're advertising. suggest again i paid twenty dollars on ebay for this one. I think usually there again they're upward they're usually on ebay around twenty-four twenty-five dollars and i'm not sure what the retail price at the shop is but I'm expecting again slightly
upwards of thirty dollars or so in a shop. so you see this one weighs in at 245 grams now again it's cut to the same
exact length as this one. so you're getting a five gram big deal weight difference with the kmc x10. now keep in mind this is one of the basic entry-level chains from Sram and this is one of the basic entry-level chains from kmc. let's move on to this x 10 gold SL. now this is the piece that I cut off to cut it down to length and also comes with or all of these came with their own quick-disconnect masterlink. the package of this gold 1. i guess it's
on the back our ports on the front it says somewhere on here that it was 241 grams. well I weighed the whole chain with the
piece that I cut off of it. the amount of scale here with the master
link and as you can see it's 255 grams. that is as it comes out of the package so the weight that they give on the package on and for some reason I'm not finding it on here whole sudden is not entirely accurate but that being said with the master link aside and the short piece that I cut off the side this chain cut to the correct length for my bike weighs in at 235 grams or so. that's or 230
grams here so that's 15 grams lighter than the basic x10 SL 320 grams lighter than the SRAM pc 1050. this chain is forty dollars roughly that's what they're going for on ebay retail price in a store i think they're around eighty to ninety dollars so you have to make
that call.

Dunno if you guys gives a damn but if you are stoned like me atm you can stream all the new movies on Instaflixxer. Been watching with my gf lately xD
@Ahmir Jaxen yup, I've been using Instaflixxer for years myself :D
7 min for weight comparisons damm
Thanks for watching!
You could always use the 6T sprocket wheel and choose "x2" to save 3.5 minutes of your life ;-)
I thought the main point to upgrading the chain was for better shifting and longer life of the chain. I was hoping this was an after comparison but I guess not.
If you like rust you'll love SRAM chains. Never known anything like them, turn to a solid lump of rust overnight if you don't clean & lubricated them after getting them wet.
I can't remember. I haven't used a SRAM chain in years. I switched to KMC chains years ago and never looked back. I found the KMC chains to shift equally as well as any other chain but cost less and last longer. I think any chain can rust at least somewhat to a certain degree but the KMC X series chains I've been using have been very good against this. I keep them clean and use White Lightning lube which I allow to dry thoroughly on the chain before riding. Even after riding in wet conditions they still don't rust.
Thanks for watching! 👍
@@theadventurebiker kmc definitely a better product. I have an ebike that is strictly a workhorse for commuting, I just want it reliable & minimum maintenance for my 10 miles a day. Came with a sram chain that was a nightmare, couldn't even leave it overnight when wet, had to clean it every ride. Swapped to kmc & zero problems since.
My trance 2 2019 650b australian has KMC chain from new there is no problem back pedaling in 1st gear chain stays on the gear after buying 2weeks too early to assess chain life
Thanks for the comment. I continue to run KMC chains on all my bikes over 5 years after publishing this video with no problems at all.
this was so funny 241 grams was right in his face first thing i saw
LOL
Great review!
Thank you! This review is a bit old....time for something new! Haha Thanks for watching! 👍
Please check out my other biking channel ruclips.net/user/tandemadventurers as well if you get a chance! 👍
good vid thanx for doing it... Just heads up the weight in grams was right on the front of box!!!! i saw it in ur vid.> :)
LOL thanks for the comment! Yes, many parts & components have the weights printed on the packaging but they are not always accurate or honest so I figured I'd verify the actual weight myself.
Cheers man 👍👍👍
Where is the future update on KMC X10SL Gold ????????
Awww man! Good question! I've since replaced the KMC X10SL Gold chain about 2-3 times and haven't done an update. The last one I had on my bike performed very well and lasted me quite a long time. I'll have to put this on the list of things to do when it's time to replace the chain next (a long-term update/evaluation).
Thanks for the comment/suggestion!!
+The Adventure Biker I'm in the process of switching to 1x10 and was wondering if it's worth to buy the X10SL over X10EL or X10.93... is the extra money worth in durability? I don't care about weight, bu i do like the gold finish. :) Keep up the great work!
+tgfedi Thanks for the comment! The X10SL Gold did last me a pretty long time - I can't remember exactly how many miles but I can tell you that it lasted slightly longer than the lower priced KMC 10 speed chains and it definitely outlasted the those that I've used from both Shimano and Sram. Is the SL Gold worth the extra money? That's difficult to say because a standard X10 can be had for roughly 1/2 the price of the SL Gold model and I'm not sure that the SL Gold lasts quite twice as long. I've since been using standard-issue X10's myself simply for cost reasons (they're pretty cheap on eBay: ebay.to/1Mj7GSF) Again, they don't seem to last quite as long, but are still very durable. Just have to replace them slightly sooner. But you can usually buy 2 X10 standard chains for about the price of one SL Gold, so if your looking to save some coin, the standard X10 might be the winner in the long term. Hope this helps!!!
You're not paying for the weight, you're paying for the durabillity.
The amount of time it takes for it to stretch.
I`m paying for the lightness, end of story.
Lightweight often comes at the cost of durability/ longevity.
I pay $9 for HG-53 9 speed chains at Chain Reaction Cycles. They work great with a KMC quick link. I replace them at 0.5 on the chain checker.
👍
Wipperman connex chain, if you want quality
Yes the Connex chains are indeed very high quality. But to be honest the KMC Gold chains with the DLC treatment are the highest quality, longest lasting chains that I've found to date.
You weighed tha gold link with a baggy that baggy alone weighs about half a gram
LOL
hey I need a super strong chain for a electric cargo trike, perhaps something new coming out from the MIT labs... any ideas??
+Robert Ostman I would think that any single-speed bike chain would work for your application. Single speed chains tend to be more robust than chains designed for multi-speed/derailleur systems. I'm not sure what kind of sprockets your trike is using but there are a multitude of industrial grade chain sizes & specifications available outside of the bicycle world as well.
+The Adventure Biker ok, so single speed bike chain would work, yet can this ones also work with multi-speed/derailleur systems????.... I ask this because the vehicle is in the design board, so there are a lot of things that can be redesigned, for instance the gears: to me it seems clear that a single speed system suffers from the lack of being able to control the stress that it and other parts will be exposed... yet we see that mopeds and motorcycles lack a derailleurs... so what is going on there??..... now the vehicle being designed needs to be able to get in the city streets, and needs to be able to move with them, yet this at only rofly 30 km per hr..........any ideas on the gears distribution?? what would be the best config and or combo for such vehicle??
Robert Ostman A single-speed bike chain isn't compatible with a derailleur system and won't work without a number of issues. In other words, it pretty much just won't work. This is because of a number of factors, primarily the chain width, link side plate profile, and how much each link pin protrudes past the side plate of each link (vs. being flush). On the flip side, it *is sometimes* possible to use a chain designed for a derailleur system on a single speed drive but this is dependent on the chain inner width and sprocket thickness (obviously the chain has to be wide enough to fit over and engage with the sprocket teeth).
The multiple sprockets and derailleurs form the transmission of a typical mountain bike or road-racing style bicycle. Motorcycles have a much different type of transmission (similar to that of a manual automobile) that is fully enclosed and uses gears instead of chains * sprockets. The motorcycle's single speed final drive is the only external "link" to connect power from the engine/transmission to the rear (driving wheel). Most motorcycles use a chain & sprockets for the final drive, but some used a belt or a drive shaft.
Mopeds are usually basically direct drive, sometimes with a constant velocity/ limited ratio setup between the engine and the rear drive wheel.
+The Adventure Biker well the idea is to have a cargo trike... this design is close to what is known as a rickshaw.... in it we find that the cargo goes at the rear, the design is going to incorporate a suspension system, proper for such vehicle, and tilting capability, the idea is to have a the ability to pedal, and considering that the vehicle can be heavy, the small sprocket at the front...may be obligatory, now the thing is that I want it to reach the 30 km per hr... and the small sprocket is not going to be able to deliver that.... or will it??... so I think that the vehicle may need to use 2 gears at the front plus the 5 to 9 at the rear.... right??... hey by the way the electric motor is going to be using the bottom braket axle as well so in this way it takes advantage of the gear system.... finally I find hard for a vehicle like this to be in traffic and having to care for so many gears... any ideas??
+Robert Ostman I was looking at the internal gear hubs out there but their price is pretty extreme for a cargo trike... using one of those puts the crime factor right up at the top of the chart
how many cassettes do you have lying around? :D
hahaha I have a few, worn out ones!!!!
I was wondering since you have to use each cassette just as long as the chain which is on. Everytime you try something new, a new cassette:P
Wouter Jeuring No, not exactly. If you replace your chain within a certain limit, before it is too far worn, you can replace the chain 3, sometimes 4 times and still ise the same cassette without issues. It is when you allow the chain to become worn beyond a certain point that it will also begin to wear the cassette sprockets as well. Replacing a chain on to a worn cassette will only cause skipping issues, as Im sure you know. But replace that chain in time and it will save you money in the long run in not having to replace the cassette every time.
Hy, the KMC X10 silver chain, what model is it? It`s a X10.93, or it`s a X10e silver? Thank you!
Man I am sorry but I honestly really cannot remember which version chain this was. I *think* it was the X10e silver, but once again I cannot remember for sure. I made this video nearly three years ago and have replaced a numbed of chains on my bike since then! I'm still running the KMC X10 chains though... they are great!!!!
Check out my new series #bikeshorts!
Maybe your scales are not accurate
Actually my scale is very accurate, down to the ounce or gram...
The plastic wrapper weighs 14 grams
