  • Testing out the 2016 BMW 330e iPerformance on the "MAX eDrive" combined with the "ECO PRO" -setting. This test car had a rating of 44gr of CO2 per km. The official CO2 emissions of the 330e range from 44gr to 49gr depending on the wheels, so note that with wider diameter wheels, for example with the M Sport line, the range is most likely slightly less than with this car.
    Color: Mineral white (metallic).
    Wheels: 16" V-Spoke 390
    Test conducted on April 16th, 2016 in Helsinki, Finland.

    Thank you for a great review. Assuming this is one of the most useful and informative video showing real life with 330e. I've ordered one a few months ago waiting for a March delivery. Hope the outdoor temperature will raise up and I will have a chance to achieve similar e-drive range as you. Greetings from Prague... :)

    330e will shine when its use is a short commute but for those who use it for long commune AND if u have full battery i suggest: Use a sport mode+Auto E Drive its maximum efficiency due to the car in comfort mode (default) will always ise electric and will deplete all ur battery so use ur engine which is (sport mode, not sport+ or manual/sport on gear knob) this will allow engine to work hybridly with electric to gain as lowest consumption as possible, combine those energy to put deplete minimum resource on both, its very good car ONLY IF u know how to use it

    Nice video. Thanks. I have been driven my 330e since December 2015 now. In NL BMW managed to get about 30 pre-series 330e. And I was one of the lucky guys... I drove about 22.000 km now. Funny thing is that until spring the range on Max eDrive was max 22 km. And not a km more. So you're doing better. Maybe BMW did some last improvements? Since a few weeks (temperature is about 20 degrees Celsius now in NL) I managed to drive about 28 km. So temperate makes the difference! My fuel consumption on average is 5 ltr/100 km. Which is pretty good I think. Although my former car, a diesel BMW 3-series (the 320e ED) did 4.5ltr/100 km (and that is without electricity). Nevertheless, this is an awesome care with amazing technology and a high fun factor with so much torque and power. Enjoy your rides!

      +Jan van Wijngaarden Interesting! One of my friends just got his 330e delivered last week and at +20c he is getting 33km of range, although I cannot confirm what the actual range vs. indicated is. The batteries should be the same (cells by Samsung, packaged by BMW), so there might be a software update available to your car... ? I'd call the dealer and check. My car is getting delivered ca. the 3rd of June, so I'll post a few test videos as soon as I get it. Thanks for the update!

      +Jan van Wijngaarden Perhaps software upgrade needed. Wouldn't be very surprised if they could squeeze out more energy from braking with just SW improments. Talk to your dealer - they should be able to upgrade your car to latest i-Level with small or no fee.

      My car has to go to the garage in 10.000 km and will definitely ask if an upgrade is available. Thanks. Funny thing is that at the moment I can sometimes charge my car up to 30km. According to the display. It's less but I already managed to drive 27 km. So it goes up!

      What are your thoughts on driving a rear wheel drive vehicle in snowy conditions? or even in a city with hills/snow? Do you think it's less of a problem with the 330e since there's a heavy battery over the rear axle or does it still have issues with spin out and stability in these conditions?

    I wanted to know how efficient the sat nav works at trying to fathom out the best route. Will it automatically pick the best route for economy (as i have two routes to my work) A - inner city - around 4.8miles and B - Motorway (50mph) around 4.3miles. Can i over ride the system to use the inner city route so that it will use pure electric??

    • @BMWiPerformance
      @BMWiPerformance  7 лет назад +1

      Hi +Ashley Stubbs ! The built in nav only shows one route, which is the fastest. Even though you would use the highway route, you can always click on the eDrive selector on the base of the gearshift and select Max eDrive. This limits your top speed to 70mph, but you can drive 100% on electric mode. Hope this helps!

    Interesting, thanks. We currently have both an i3 (mine) and e90 (spouse). The i3 has converted me to the virtues of ePower for urban driving. It gets 90% of our use at this point; the e90 is strictly for secondary and long distances. I'm even starting to contemplate a plug-in hybrid akin to a 330e when the e90 needs replacing. I'm a bit surprised by the power consumption though maybe I'm spoiled by the i3. I got 9.3kWh/100 km on the commute home tonight without any attempt at economy (heavy acceleration, Comfort mode, and climate control on auto).

    Any other tricks to get maximum range? Suppose to be possible to get 22 miles according to BMW. The 330e is one of the few RWD PHEVs on the market right now.

    • @BMWiPerformance
      @BMWiPerformance  7 лет назад +3

      There is one special trick if you drive in the cold. You can set two different departure times in iDrive for the preconditioning. If you want to set off at 9am for example, set the other departure time 30mins prior to your actual start time. In this case this would be for 9am and for 8.30am. This starts heating up the car already at 8am and therefore the batteries start heating up too. I use this trick at temperatures below 0c and it works well. Hope this helps :-)

    • @MidniteSon
      @MidniteSon 7 лет назад

      I read that by setting the vehicle in Hold/Charge mode, and then selecting it into Sport mode, you can charge the battery up to 80%. Is this accurate?

    • @BMWiPerformance
      @BMWiPerformance  7 лет назад

      Interesting, I haven't heard of that. I'll try it out later this week, but am pretty sure the Save battery mode will only charge the car up to 50% even if Sport mode is selected. Stay tuned :-)

    • @tarassu

      Don't make any heat with climate control at all. Set it to lowest temperature setting and switch AC compressor OFF. Use seat heaters, use steering wheel heating (those take less than 0.1% of range compared with air heating, up to 40% of range). Don't use rear window defrost. Use preheat before trip.
      Don't use more than 50% of electric motor power. Accelerate gently from standstill up to 10-15km/h. Don't drive faster than 70km/h.
      Never use brake pedal above 10km/h if possible. Wasted energy.
      If you obey all this you will definitely get more range.

    I hope you weren't disappointed with the car - you only let it sit for less than 8 minutes before turning back, so the car was still warm. Your initial consumption as you picked up the car was higher, because of the energy used to heat up the interior. If it was an actual working day, the car would be cold all over, and since you made it home with so little extra range to spare, I imagine the car will have to start the engine quite frequently in the colder time of year? :)

    • @BMWiPerformance
      @BMWiPerformance  7 лет назад +1

      Not at all, I absolutely loved the car and my own 330e has been really really great! I shot the video on a Saturday since there wasn't almost any other cars on the road. I just got a burger from the McD and then headed back. I have a warm indoor car park at work which helps out a lot. You are correct that the range drops significantly in the cold. I'll shoot an update for this video when it gets properly cold, like -20c / -5f. :-)

    Are they any reviews of how the 330e handles in the snow & ice? I live in the PNW and need a car that can handle in snow and ice. Any idea if they are going to an all wheel drive model?

    • @BMWiPerformance
      @BMWiPerformance  7 лет назад

      I'll try to make a video on the snow capabilities of the car for you in the near future.
      The 330e handles very nicely in the snow with proper tires. BMW does already have the option to build a 4wd model, but the designation of that would be a 340e and the power would be in the 278-313hp mark. They won't put it into production though, because the Munich factory is running at 100% capacity. We need to wait for the successor of the F30 for this, which is the G20, scheduled for release in 2018.

    Thank you for the review and video! I wish to see more videos like this, in different routes, weather... About the battery, we know it has a 7.6kWh battery, but how much is the effective capacity of the battery? I heard it is about 5.7kWh on avg... I am asking because I have a Fusion Energi, and it supposed to have 9kWh, but the effective capacity that I have is 5.2. Wondering if the 330e will give me a more effective capacity...

  • @astroplutonium
    @astroplutonium 6 лет назад +1

    I wonder if when the battery is low, do you loose all electric power from electric motor? So you can in effect have 250hp only as long as your battery is charged?

    • @BMWiPerformance
      @BMWiPerformance  6 лет назад +5

      Hi! Good question! The car will never let the battery run out completely. When there is about 3-8% of battery left, it will start charging the battery automatically. I've had my 330e now for about two years and the lowest charge I've ever seen it have is 2%. It typically drops from Max eDrive and starts charging at 7-8% during normal driving and the only way to get it lower than that is to drive really slowly. So, you will always have the 250hp at your disposal and running "out of battery" like on a cell phone or a laptop isn't possible. Hope this answers your question! :-)

    • @astroplutonium
      @astroplutonium 6 лет назад

      Thanks for the quick answer. But in effect, if the petrol motor is charging the battery won't the effect of the petrol motor on the wheels be reduced while the battery is being charged? So lets say after 2 hours of driving where the battery is on 3% the electric motor will be on 100% effect receiving charge from the battery but the petrol will not be on 100% because som of it's effect will be consumed by the charging effect. I am not sure of the balancing and i know that the coefficient of the electric motor is much higher, thus requiring much less effect from the petrol than the actual output but guess what i am wondering is what is the 'real world' torque and HP output when the battery is on 'charging' state.

    • @astroplutonium
      @astroplutonium 6 лет назад

      I currently have a Tesla model S but due to the bad service experience i am looking to something else. I really see this as the only viable alternative as all other EVs are either very ugly or very weak. My thought is this. 95% of the time i use my car to commute to work which is 22km from home. I already have a fast charger home from the Tesla. Also i can charge at work. The last 5% of the time that i would like to have some fun/more dynamic driving i think the 249hp would be more than enough. But 160hp on a 1.8t car... not so much. I have had several BMWs so i am really happy with their quality and reliability comparing to the Tesla. I guess i just have to drive one for a few hours to see the real world usage in connection to the motor effect.

    • @BMWiPerformance
      @BMWiPerformance  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, you are correct, and plug-in-hybrids like the 330e work like normal hybrid cars like a Prius when the battery is low. Please note though that in Max eDrive the battery will only charge to about 15% and in order to charge the car more, you need to put it in Save Battery mode. This is only recommended only in highway driving when you know that you need to drive in the city, otherwise using Save Battery is less efficient. I either keep the car in Max eDrive when driving in the city or on longer trips I use Auto eDrive.
      The car charges the batteries by using the electric motor itself even in Max eDrive mode (when it does whenever you are slowing down to the stoplights for example, just like a Tesla or a Prius) or it is using the electric motor to speed up the car. When you perform a kick down on the gas pedal, it will *always* use the electric motor to give the car a boost which BMW calls eBoost. From BMW: "The eBoost function, which pools the torque of both drive systems under acceleration, serves up BMW’s signature driving pleasure, whatever the conditions."

      I've absolutely loved my 330e, it is a great car and the service has been phenomenal. BMW just announced at the Geneva Motor Show (March 2018) that there are more BMW i -cars going to be announced later this year. So, if you want to wait there will be more options, but a 330e is a great choice. Also check out the 530e - it is a very good car and a bit closer to the same size as a Model S. The 330e is pretty much the exact same size as Model 3.

    • @BMWiPerformance
      @BMWiPerformance  7 лет назад

      Unfortunately it doesn't. :-( The tick indicates the cruise control and when it is lit green it means it is active and when orange it is in standby.
      You can set the car to warn you when you go over a certain speed, but it is not 'smart' like many standalone satnav boxes, where it would warn you if you are going xx km/h over a certain speed-limit. I've written to BMW about this and hopefully it will be coming to future models.

    BMW just need to do something about the interior, i.e. the instrument panel, gages etc. It hasn't changed much since the 90's. PS. I own a 2015 5-series and I strongly dislike the interior.

    • @BMWiPerformance
      @BMWiPerformance  7 лет назад

      I agree. The gages look horrible and better ones are available, for example in the M3 and M4. The 2018/2019 G20 will have much better gages though, although the rest of the interior will not be much different. It is one of the ways for BMW trying to upsell you from a 3 series to a 5 series. :-(

      Önder Sarıoğlu Engine kicks in and various regeneration systems take effect. You can own this car, save fuel, and never plug charge it once. It's amazing imo.

      When the battery reaches ~11-12% the petrol engine will kick in and the car goes from Max eDrive back to Auto eDrive. The driver doesn't have to push any buttons etc, it is all automatic and super convenient.

    It is cold outside and you use AC compressor? What?

      .... prevents the windscreen misting up...

      Iain Ansell Not neccesdary if it is not superwet outside amd no drunk people breathing in the cabin.

    • @iainansell5930
      @iainansell5930 7 лет назад

      Ummm condensation on the windows happens to moist air and different temperatures from within and outside cabin....AC removes the moisture.... The user manual for any car (that has AC) always says to use AC to demist the windscreen...

    • @tarassu
      @tarassu 7 лет назад

      Iain Ansell just blow hard on windscreen and noisture will go away. Especiqlly if you blow hot air. AC helps a lot but i susually overkill. Also after switching off AC a lot of water will melt and for 10 minutes it is superwet

    • @BMWiPerformance
      @BMWiPerformance  7 лет назад

      Car ACs have evaporator coils as a part of the system, which dehumidify the air coming in the cabin. This helps a lot and keeps the windows from misting up, just as +Iain Ansell pointed out.

      I fully agree. When I was at BMW HQ this summer I saw the not-yet-released specs and photos of the upcoming gen2 wallboxes. They are now out and are much smaller and way longer cables. More info on BMW's website: charging.bmwgroup.com/web/wbdoc/bmw-i-wallbox

      I always obey speed limits on public roads, but have been driving on track for the last ~20 years. On track I'm happy to take a BMW, Porsche or something more exotic like an Ariel Atom sideways. Also speeding fines in Finland are crazy (Google it). By driving just 21km/h / 13mph over the speed limit carries a fine where the government will dock 12 days of pay and driving over 30km/h / 18.6mph over the speed limit will get you 22-32 days of pay (over a month!). For example driving 90km/h / 55mph in a 60km/h / 37mph zone will get you a ticket equal to one month pay. Not fun and definitely not worth it.

      +Dan Frederiksen Teslas are great cars! I went with a 330e this time, but let's see what Tesla has out in ca 5 years. The Tesla Model S mk2 might be really interesting when it comes out!

    • @BMWiPerformance
      @BMWiPerformance  8 лет назад

      +Dan Frederiksen The wait for one of those is at least 3 years, that's a bit too much for me. :-)

    • @BMWiPerformance
      @BMWiPerformance  8 лет назад

      +Dan Frederiksen I meant that I didn't want to wait for three years for a Model 3 now. In about 5-8 years I need something a bit bigger, like a full EV 5 series or the equivalent Tesla, which is an S :-)
