+Shpetz Wow, awesome question! I even didn't know there was a thing as MPG(US) and MPG(UK) :-) The MPG rating is MPG(US), so American MPG. For people watching in the UK, the correct European MPG figure is 46MPG(UK).
I have a 2017 model. I average 5.1 on the highway @ 130 - 145 km/h. As you have had your battery depleted in comfort or ecopro the system will charge the battery to around 11% and that is when the car becomes hungry for gas. If I'm charging the battery the consumption is 9l per 100 km whereas if the battery is not charging 4.5 to 5.4 l. If you have the new i drive with os 7 go to my vehicle / technology and energy flow. Than you will see what the car is doing. Because mine like I've mentioned in comfort or in ecopro charges the battery to 11% if I fling it in to sport mode on the gearbox in the same modes it charges the battery to 22%. Using the e-drive button if I set it in to " save the battery for later" mode it will charge the battery to 91%.
What you haven't taken into account is that the petrol engine is not just driving the car it is also re-charging the battery, so if you continue the test into a city you will be able to drive on pure electric mode and thus rapidly increase your mpg.
Thanks for your comment. I forgot to film what the range was at the end of the test. It was 0km, so the car didn't charge the batteries while on the highway. If I would have the car on "save battery" mode, then it would have charged it up to 50% with the use of the engine. On auto eDrive the car only charges the battery while braking and slowing down. Hope this helps!
Good question and no, there wasn't any problem. :-) The Honda HR-V is economical at lower speeds and does get approx what Honda claims, but consumes a LOT more at 60mph+. In Finland the freeway speeds are 120kmh (75mph) and the consumption of nearly +50% is normal.
there is no option not to use electric at all. if the battery is low it will be charged to some degree (10-20% depending on cruise mode) using lot of fuel. then it will charge from regenerative braking and use the electricity for cruise. there is no option that I know to cut the electric circuit. the combined consumptionof electric and gas it's shown at vehicle information -> eDrive By the way, what percent of of the battery did you have at the end of the trip? because the car never let the battery depleted.
Is it possible to drive this car in a hybrid mode, similar to Lexus' models? What is the consumption then? Also, can you do a trunk test, putting in some large suitcases and/or shopping bags, just so that we can see the practicality side of it? Do you know how wheel size will affect the consumption? 18" being more specific.
Hi, what would be the fuel consumption in the same conditions but at 140kmh and at 150 kmh? What is the averal range with a full fuel tank driving only on the motorway? Thanks!
Hi, First off all thanks voor the full-electric and gas mileage tests. I know that the car also has a e- drive mode that, depending on the route choice true the navigation provide the ideal consumption . I wonder how many km can drive this car in the auto e-drive mode on a full petrol tank and full electric charge. For example, the 2015 318d has an operating range of 1,200 kilometers on one tank . maybe if you have the opportunity to make a long trip ( maybe a weekend away ) to test this. thanks
+Johannes Dorsey Sounds interesting! The petrol tank in the 330e is only 40 liters, so the range is lower than with other 3 series variants. I'm thinking that the range will be in the ~660-700km range. I'll be driving to northern Finland in late July and I'll start off with a full tank of gas as well as 100% batteries, so I can do the test then. Stay tuned for late July and thanks for the comment!
As Johannes said, if you can do a similar test, but starting with a full battery pack and auto eDrive, no need to test the full range of the car, just the 100kms you did here. I'm genuinely considering this car over the Lexus IS 250h, any more info would be greatly appriciated.
My car is being delivered on the first week of June, so I can do the 100km @ auto eDrive & eco pro -test right after taking delivery. I'll try to get this video published by the second week in June at the latest. Thanks for the comment and stay tuned! Also thanks for subscribing :-)
KingProne You are correct. With the 330e compared to the 320d, the 320d starts winning at around 60kms. We are still gathering data on this with the Finnish BMW club (we are gathering data on five 330e's).
More importantly, since the test ended with the battery charged 50% (?), I'd add half the battery mileage to distance traveled. Or repeat the test with the battery at 100%.. Thanks.
HI BMW IPerformance, can you make a video were you tested the hole system combined with the pertrol engine and the e motor on the same way like you have done with the pertrol engine mileage test ? I drive now a 330D F31 and i look for a good alternative car for the next years because i live in germany and the people here are going to buy new cars from politics although the old ones are also environmentally friendly and efficient.
no, its just like a tesla. 1gear. i think you drive with the car in sport mode and then save battery and then it would use the engine to recharge the battery. i think it uses the alternator
I don’t know what kind of customer these cars attract. Seriously, if you’re looking to save, either buy a full electric vehicle that actually has good range or a diesel
why? most of the countries in europe wants to get rid of diesel. Sweden is already getting ready to punish people with diesel & petrol cars to raise the car taxes.
Well, it depends on your location. In the U.K. you get huge tax breaks if you are a business user. There are loads of these about. However, whilst I love mine it has has to have a new starter motor, main battery and brain...£8k worth of repairs....in warranty fortunately. I would NOT buy one privately or second hand out of warranty.
Is this american mpg or European mpg

yes yes yes !!! just what I've been asking for
Do you know average mileage in city driving without charge?
Also do you know if it regenerates when breaking?
Thanks
Hi. Thanks for video.
Did you make a video about the average fuel consumption in hybrid mode at a speed of 100 - 120 km h?
Thank you.

Very good! My lighter Audi A3 with a 1.6FSI with 116hp uses even more petrol!
That consumption is way too high for a modern 1.5l on the Honda. Are you sure there wasn't some other problem, like low tire pressure?
Good question and no, there wasn't any problem. :-) The Honda HR-V is economical at lower speeds and does get approx what Honda claims, but consumes a LOT more at 60mph+. In Finland the freeway speeds are 120kmh (75mph) and the consumption of nearly +50% is normal.
Thanks for the response! I'm thinking it could be caused by a high drag coefficient. But I can't find a resource that gives it.

Good info! Out of interest, how much battery did you recover through braking regen etc at the end of your journey?

if you do lots of highway driving a diesel engine will be superior to a plugin hybrid...

which super does it need for full power? 98 or 95?
Hi again do you have the numbers for the Petrol engine BMW X5 eDrive ?
HI BMW IPerformance,
can you make a video were you tested the hole system combined with the pertrol engine and the e motor on the same way like you have done with the pertrol engine mileage test ? I drive now a 330D F31 and i look for a good alternative car for the next years because i live in germany and the people here are going to buy new cars from politics although the old ones are also environmentally friendly and efficient.
Just wondering, when on electric only does the car still change gear? Also, if the battery is empty can driving with the engine recharge it?
no, its just like a tesla. 1gear. i think you drive with the car in sport mode and then save battery and then it would use the engine to recharge the battery. i think it uses the alternator
The engine is cold!
New motor so it will burn more gas until it loosens up
My diesel gets around 52 mpg (U.S) on 19 inch wheels , plus it costs 5000 dollars less
