In this video, I take the Blu Tech R3 compact off-grid water filter system to a local lake. I demo how I pump lake water and filter it into clean, fresh water for safe use in our RV tank. To transport the water, I use a collapsible water bladder. See more about the bladder here - www.loveyourrv.com/off-grid-w...

Incredible how that meltwater is practically just as clean as the filtered water!! Beautiful nature!
Nice to have a trusted independent test of these commercial products..
Great info, thx!
Looks like you just saved me a couple hours of research. Thank you.
Also, nice catch of the elusive Ann in the wild. I see you had to go to some extra effort to get that shot. (-:
Pretty neat technology. [your filtered lake water looks more clear than the tap water delivered by our municipal water authority here in southern CA].
AWESOME😁
Water filter system could be handy. When my family is out on one of our adventures, finding access to potable water is sometimes an annoying challenge. One thing I do not like about the pre-assembled systems is their very high price ($499 MSRP for the one reviewed in the video). You can find find 3 filter housings and filters online and assemble your own system for around $120 to $140. That is $359 cheaper!
At 67 now I wouldn't trust stream, lakes local water supply so many chemicals out there its crazy. Remember knowledge is power.
That's why you filter and boil.
Would u have trusted it at 66?
Your comment is Stupid ……truth !
Just a thought and I’m sure you are aware , need final UV light to kill most bacteria . Even states that in the sheet you showed.
Yes, good point, but it in fact, refers to viruses, not bacteria, they are much smaller than bacteria, so some can get through even small .2 micron size filters : (Blu Technology recommends the use of UVC to disinfect viruses. Filtration alone does not address all viruses)
"Viruses: Parasitic infectious microbes, composed almost entirely of protein and nucleic acids, which can cause disease(s) in humans. Viruses can reproduce only within living cells. They are 0.004 to 0.1 microns in size, which is about 100 times smaller than bacteria."
They did tell me that the off-grid filters had some kind of special film coating on them that is there to trap even smaller things like viruses. That is the difference between the off-grid .2 micron and the regular .2 micron filters. I imagine, though, they can't say 100% that it will get all viruses, thus the recommendation for UV.
This is from the Blu Tech fact page
"All of our products when installed with the Blu Technology “Safety” 0.2 Micron 5” filter are specifically designed for filtering water from lakes, rivers, streams, or rain barrels to create great tasting drinking water. The Rx and battery-powered Rx+ have a 3 GPM pump on board, so that are specifically designed for remote water access."

Personally, I have installed an Acuva LED-UV purifier for final stage drinking water. www.loveyourrv.com/installing-led-uv-rv-water-purification-system-acuva-arrowmax-2-0/ My wife is immune compromised so really want to make sure the water is safe.

CLEAN, SAFE WATER FROM ANY LAKE OR STREAM
Engineered for the rugged outdoor adventurer, the Clearsource Nomad pulls water from any lake or stream and purifies it better than even the best portable survival filters. Drink, shower, clean up - whatever you want with unlimited clean, fresh water!
It has a filter called Virus Guard www.clearsourcerv.com/collections/replacement-filters/products/virusguard-filter
You had me with Ann in the promo photo……but……she’s not in the video?
No, very elusive , I was lucky to get photo approval! :)
Thanks Ray! Did you taste the two samples?
No, just one. :)
Ray, the paperwork states that the system "Removes or reduces pathogens" but that Blu Tech. recommends using UVC as not all viruses are removed. Did you run it through your UVC before drinking the lake water?
No, drank it just filtered to see what it tasted like, though I do have an onboard Acuva LED-UV purifier unit in the RV that we normally use.

Nothing to do with the water but I noticed you have a big chain going from your rear driver side tie down towards the front of the cab of the truck bed what and why is it there ? Is it strictly for tying down that tool box and did you already utilize the front tie downs?
I use it as a theft deterrent for the fifth wheel hitch and the storage chest. Figure it looks intimidating to a causal parking lot truck bed peeper, and it will make lots of noise if someone messes with it at night. I carry a second one to lock up stuff like my generator to the fifth wheel. They are galvanized, so they won't rust. Cheers, Ray
It seems that your pump and white water hose become "dirty" after pumping lake water through them. They may now contain any of those things that the filter is made to filter out. If you now pump your 30 gallons using the same pump and hose, you have lost all benefit. Also, is the black hose going to leave some taste or is it like the white hose?
The black hose I used is 100% Drinking Water Safe & Lead Free amzn.to/3T4NEGx Back at the RV, I'd be using the filter again and a different RV fresh water hose for the final output fill of my RV fresh tank. Cheers, Ray
How is the flow, compared to your ClearSource setup?
It was less than half. I did a head to head comparison in the review video. Here is a link to the section of the video ruclips.net/video/DHXYqNgKxbY/видео.html Cheers, Ray
Hi FRay, thanks for this review with Lake/River water. What is the white tape you used to repair your old Water Bladder? Cheers :-0)
It was Eternabond roof tape, all I had at the time, worked well enough until I could get a new bladder. Ended up going from a 30 gallon to a 60 gallon.
@@LoveYourRV Thank You. I have to stick an electric wire -from the TPMS Repeater- to the interior roof of my truck’s box and it’s some kind of grey synthetic carpet material. I have tried all the different tapes I have-which is a whole lot- Nothing holds. I Think Ethernabond might. Or I could move the repeater 😅🥹
Might do the trick, Eternabond is super sticky!
@@LoveYourRV Will try,, pretty costly here in Canada though
Check at Home Hardware stores, many stock a smaller patch kit 4 inches x 5 feet www.homehardware.ca/en/white-roof-gutter-and-skylight-tape/p/2037101
Hi Ray, we have an aluminum zinc anode rod (just switched from magnesium rod) and installed charcoal filters. The smell from our water is awful. What type of filters do you recommend? Not sure if there’s a chemical reaction from anode rod or ? Thanks!
I've used both magnesium and aluminum anodes and never noticed a difference. Is the smell of all the water bad cold and hot or just the hot water? That will tell you if its produced in the water heater tank or the incoming water issue.
@@LoveYourRV it’s not so much in the cold as in the hot water. Tried removing the magnesium rod and replacing with aluminum zinc (which was replaced about 3 months ago) and replacing filters (carbon). That seemed to make matters worse. Removed carbon filters and flushed water heater again today (flushed water heater before doing any of this initially and cleaned tank using wand and vinegar). Waiting on non carbon filters from Amazon now, but just wondered if possible reaction with carbon filters and zinc aluminum anode?
I've used carbon filters for years and never have had smelly water, so I don't think it's that. Sounds like you have sulfur in the water and causing bacteria to form in the water heater tank. Here are articles about it www.corroprotec.com/blog/sulfur-smell-in-hot-water/ www.cruiseamerica.com/rv-adventures/rv-lifestyle/rv-water-smells-like-rotten-eggs
@@LoveYourRV thanks, will take a look at the articles. Appreciate it.
Found the issue, corroded electric element. No more metallic smell after replacing.
I noticed in the spec sheet you posted it mentions that you should also use a UV filter to kill the viruses that the filter can't get.
Yes, they recommend UV purification also as a secondary process ("Blu Technology recommends the use of UVC to disinfect viruses. Filtration alone does not address all viruses")

These filters are extremely expensive for the vast majority of RV users. The fraction of typical RV users that would need or benefit from these extreme filters is very small. I prefer your reviews on products and services that most of us have a practical use for.
Thanks for your feedback. There are tons of reviews on the common everyday RV products, and I have done most myself over the last 10 years. Now have published 846 videos. These days it's more fun for me to explore more interesting niche products or, if possible, promote quality USA-made stuff. I could keep reviewing the most commonly used cheaper stuff and get many more video views and subscribers. But gets kind of boring for me personally, and in the end, that is what counts and keeps me engaged. Cheers, Ray
Not my cup of tea. Yes if I had do, but I don’t………
Speaking of "Backcountry," have you seen this killer Canadian movie, based loosely on a real-life event at Missinaibi Lake, in Ontario? (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backcountry_(film))
No, can't say I have
