    I hold regular studio classes in the beautiful rehearsal and classroom spaces in the Resnick Education wing of Carnegie Hall. Each is themed, and this session focuses on legato.
    Attendance and participation in these classes is free. Each is limited to thirteen total participants and auditors, so advance registration is necessary. Attendance is granted on a first-come, first-served basis, so please email me, claudia at claudiafriedlander dot com, if you would like to be notified of future classes.

    I was particularly interested to see how you would address issues in the male voice, as I have only seen you work with female voices before. It was great to see how focusing on character helped the tenor to make a more resonant sound. The whiny sound also helped him to get closer to the A4, so good tip! I would have recommended him to work on vowel modification on the word "dash" - from an "ah to more of an "uh". Are you a proponent of this technique?

    So cool to see her give adjustments and exercises and see immediate improvement and added depth. She’s a very skilled teacher. So understated. I like the pianist too.

    Very interesting exercise with the elastic band. How often should it be used and when to stop using it?

    It's notable the diference when she sing making the exercise with the elastic tape. Before she sung something like with marcatto or stacatto, and during the exercise she sing more legatto, it's very notable.

    The exercise band encouraged the first singer to support the breath evenly thereby evening the vibrato. Well done!

    Is this a community class? Are the students members of the general public?

      This is a studio class, so most of the participants are my own voice students.

    Why is someone so young singing anything from Turandot that is insane!

    • @ClaudiaFriedlander
      @ClaudiaFriedlander  5 лет назад +2

      Liu is a role for lyric soprano. It is quite accessible for a competent lyric soprano with a strong technique regardless of age, and I think that if you visit the Operabase website and do a search you will find that many relatively young sopranos sing this role. The roles of Turandot and Calaf, however, require dramatic voices with a great deal of experience and stamina. The same voice that sings Liu will also typically sing Mimi in Boheme, the Countess in Nozze di Figaro, things like that.

    Tenor has so much tongue tension. Barely accessing the top, and articulation is not clean. Interesting.

      This was a class on breath management. It's so generous of these singers to permit people like you out there on RUclips to observe their process even though they aren't yet "perfect". It takes tremendous concentration to home in on any one aspect of singing technique in order to work on it. I invite you to browse through the rest of my videos - you'll see that there are numerous resources for addressing tongue tension and other articulation concerns. But please be appreciative of these students for being willing to expose and work on their imperfections so that others may benefit. You can't take on tongue tension and breath management at the same time and expect to make meaningful progress.

      @@ClaudiaFriedlander Thank you. I hadn't considered they were still in progress. I assumed this to be more advanced, since it was in Carnegie Hall. Your videos and materials are excellent.

      @@vinlpaul3 thanks for responding! Actually, I am fortunate to have access to the Resnick Education Wing for these classes because I work for the Weill Music Institute, Carnegie Hall's educational division, and so events held here can be for anyone from pre-school kids to professionals!

    On the breath would your voice be behind the breath or forward the breath when singing that always confuses me.

    • @ClaudiaFriedlander
      @ClaudiaFriedlander  4 года назад

      Your lungs are located below the vocal folds. When you release your breath, it makes the vocal folds vibrate. So the direction of movement is what I think you would call from behind (below) the vocal folds (your voice). You release your breath, it passes through your throat as it exits your body, and on the way out it makes your voice vibrate. Hope that helps!

      Claudia Friedlander so would that mean that you sing through your mouth and not at around your nose (mask).
