A fun fact...with this movie Madhuri became the highest paid celebrity in the Industry at that time..and by that i mean males included... While the rest of the industry got paid around 1-1.5 crores... She got a whopping 2.7 crores for this movie.. So yeah another path breaking point..coz nowadays people are making a big Deal of women always getting paid less that males in the movie industry...but Madhuri broke that assumption in 90s only...
Sir,in this song it's the baby shower function of Madhuri's elder sister. And the song is all about how her sister's brother in law (Salman Khan) is mischievous and flirts a lot...like you saw in the song..and it's an all ladies function (which is why the men are secretly watching from the kitchen). You must watch this film.. it's a peek into Indian joint families, arranged marriages and lots of emotions... Thankyou for your reaction 😊🙏
This was the most flourishing time for MD . She was the most paid artist then and was paid more than male actors . In this film too she received a lot more than Salman. She was so gorgeous in this movie that the most internationally celebrated indian painter - M.F.Hussain was insane about her and watched HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN , 67 times. All of madhuri's costumes especially this blue saree was and is still trending. It was like a rage to wear the blue saree or the green lehenga from the song JOOTE DO PAISE LO in any of the weddings. The setting of this song was Madhuri's sisters baby shower (the lady sitting in yellow saree), and no men were allowed .The movie is 26 years old but still a great family rom-com.
All songs are amazing in this movie Matthew. Maye ni maye, Jhoote do Paise lo, Wah wah Ramji, Chocolate lime juice and hum aapke hain kaun title song. All these songs from the movie were chartbusters. You should watch all the songs from the movie. This movie ran in cinemas full house for 2 years.
'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun' was a huge success in the 90s. It was the gift that kept on giving. The total running length of this film is 4/5 hours, so it's also the longest film ever to be made. When the film released, the producers kept on adding extra minutes onto the film, and re-released the film globally. I don't know which version I watched at the time... but it was fun... such a great experience. The film is hugely inspired by 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'. In 'HAHK', there are two weddings and a funeral. This film also reminds me of 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding'. Greek and Indian cultures are so similar in so many ways, it's amazing. Another huge film from that time is 'DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE' (1995). This film was shot in the UK - Southall, London and Hampstead. This film stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Like HAHK, DDLJ has magnificent music and songs. DDLJ holds the record for being the longest running film in history, the film ran for 1251 weeks in a theatre in Mumbai. And this film catapulted SRK and Kajol into (crazy) world-wide stardom. SRK and Kajol are the most watched and desired couple on-screen, they're known for their romantic on-screen chemistry. Much like Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks - who I absolutely love and adore! BTW... I cannot look at Matt Le Blanc (Joey) now without thinking about Salman Khan?? How did you make that connection? Why and how? Lol!
The context for this song, is it's a ladies-only ritual (akin to a baby shower of sorts) for Madhuri's (character's) sister, who is married to Salman's brother.
In response to some of your comments, the glimpse into a ladies-only function is not in itself revolutionary, and indeed recalls another famous song, Sharma Ke Yeh Kyun, from period film Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960). What was revolutionary was that the film was an invitation to share in the family rites of passage, the good times and the sad: there was no dushoom dushoom (colloquial term for over the top fighting scenes), and no villain - apart from a meddlesome auntie ji speaking out of turn(!) - and this made a welcome break to be sure. Having said that, the fact that this film portrays a very wealthy minority was not without its controversy. This song describes the relationship between daughter-in-law and brother-in-law, because traditionally the duty of a married woman living with her in laws was to her husband and his parents, and it was the brother-in-law who would act as confidante and support (sisters-in-law did not traditionally share in domestic or adult care responsibilities: once married they would be caring for their own in-laws). Which is why the lyrics describe the daughter-in-law (the character that MD role-plays in the song) making requests of her brother-in-law, and these are for tangy things, because in South Asia it's a commonly held belief that pregnant women crave tangy flavours. So not quite a revolutionary song/performance, more a rose-tinted love letter to tradition, something to warm the cockles of your heart :) Joote Do Paise Lo, from the same film, is another brilliant glimpse into rituals and traditions surrounding weddings. However, I do have a soft spot for Chocolate Lime Juice, also from the same film. Here we see MD's character recognise her feelings for SK's character, and in doing so realises she has to leave behind her the last signs of her childhood, that she is now a woman with dreams for the future. Maye Ni Maye represents the next step in that journey, where she declares to her parents in a roundabout way her readiness for marriage. Really, it's just a showcase for MD more than anything else: the set, though lavish, is personal, the choreography easy-going yet expressive. The film has a record number of songs, so it's not easy to narrow them down!
I live and work in Berlin, Germany 🇩🇪 but would be visiting London in coming July Insha Allah. Would love to meet you soon as your enthusiasm about Bollywood is impeccable

Audio sync issues in this video but this is a true classic! Even to the point I remember every woman wore a sari like Madhuri’s
Madhuri peaked with this...
Still, watch Tabaah Ho Gaye from Kalank... The full version...
They're having a baby shower for her older sister in this song. Madhuri brought lot of energy into this movie. This is one of her most iconic movies.
Please watch 'dance with me ' from 'aaja nachle' movie. You can judge Madhuri dixit on the basis of the western dance pattern.

Why is the video and audio out of sync???
Because the download would always be shorter in time than the audio. It was stressful!
