  • There’s no sugarcoating it - Canadian lives are being taken at an alarming rate due to fatal overdoses. From 2016 to 2019 more than 12,800 Canadians have lost their lives at the hands of this epidemic. So why is there not a blinding bright spotlight as hot as the surface of the sun being shined on this issue? Province-to-province grassroots initiatives provide harm reduction services, prevent overdoses, and reverse overdoses when they happen. From health inequality to a discriminatory drug policy, everyone alive today grew up surrounded by deep stigmatization towards drugs and the people who use them. Flood: The Overdose Epidemic in Canada is a documentary that aims to reduce the stigma around substance use and inspire others to take action.

    I’m a couple weeks away from four years clean. Every time I watch videos like this it’s a reminder to keep doing what I’ve been doing. I’m only 30 and I have more dead friends than my parents. I know it I go back to my old ways I’d be dead sooner than later.

      Its sad to hear that, they should give out pure drugs in hospitals to people that tryed therapie and failed.
      After every therapie after every detox i heared of people that die, but in methadonsubstitution or even heroinsubstitution you barly hear from overdose deaths. :( its sad that people with no clue tell use what we have to do, they have no clue and are scared. Instead maybe healthworkers and doctors that work in this field should be big part of the lawmakers in that area.

It's been many years since I've used and when I was a user there wasn't any fentanyl around. Now I see that all is around is fentanyl. Barely heroin. I'm definitely glad that I didn't suffer from this fentanyl problem personally. I'm sure It would of been 100 times worse for me. God bless you all who are trying to work through recovery. And if you have to take advantage of medication to help you. Opiates changes the chemistry of your brain so that's why out of other drugs it's so hard to get and stay clean. That's why there's medication for it. Keep fighting!! Easier said than done but it can be done!

    It is important to understand why some people are able to cope with often appalling pain and still manage without taking drugs. Drug use is a consequence of a problem and their use is essentially a palliative, so unless you address the drivers that lie behind the motivation the situation will remain unchanged.

      there needs to be dedicated social areas, with "professional socializers" both in person and online. Despite the direction of internet culture and infrastructure trends, it is important for people to see and feel connected to other people, we're not saying police these places but make them substance free with a harm reduction mentality. Society is broken because it pushes us to be individualistic while ignoring our natural altruistic predisposition, trading it for attention and affirmation.

    The concept of harm reduction is great but the reality is that it doesn’t work in most cases. I have worked for several harm reduction programs where they ‘allow’ the drug use to continue. Clients come in high as hell and never have to be accountable for anything. They receive free money from SSI and just buy drugs with SSI money. I know of not one single client that is drug free from harm reduction.

    • @michaelb9529
      @michaelb9529 3 месяца назад

      The concept of harm reduction is not to get addicts off their drugs. Harm reduction is to make sure they use clean supplies and aseptic technics and non-fatal substances. There are 4 pillars. Harm reduction is only one of them.

    I saw so many of my teenage friends lose everything to heroin and other drug use. They were condemned to live on the fringes of society, cast out for making poor choices. It's an ugly side effect of our society that the majority will portray drug users and addicts as being 'scum' and refuse to see that condemnation only makes the problems worse. Allowing users to use safely is painted as 'enabling'...it's just not. If allowing users to do it safely is 'enabling', then so is allowing pubs/bars to serve alcohol. Alcohol is as addictive as heroin, and more people die from alcohol than all illegal drugs combined. We have attached a stigma to drug users that they don't deserve...they are just people who have made a few poor choices in their lives. They need support, not criticism. The so-called 'War On Drugs' was lost a long time ago, and now it is just an excuse to condemn a group on the fringes of society. It's well beyond the time that we, as HUMAN BEINGS, acknowledge that condemnation and contempt exacerbate the problem.

I don't understand why they just don't give it away to people it cost may be like pennies for each dose if people wanna do it that's their problem sure there should be places to help people who want to stop it would be so much safer if people knew what amount of whatever it is that they're taking and that nothing else was in it that would be harmful. Bingo.
      Addiction is a disease yet for over a century we have treated it as a crime. The police don't want to let go of enforcement because they would loose massive budgets and sexy jobs. The war on drugs was lost at about 1900.
      For the last few years large raves around Vancouver BC the police will check your stuff to make sure it is safe. It's voluntary and no questions asked.
      Vancouver used to be famous for heroin. You would be hard pressed even find any heroin.
      Did an OD (I hate that term these are intentional poisonings) several years ago. Tox came back that the heroin the man purchased had no heroin at all. It contained Cocaine, benzos, fentanyl. Most likely the dab of coke kept him viable to be resuscitated.

    We can't even get the federal government to treat veterans with the respect and support we deserve. I get that addiction is a disease but why should those of who chose to use drugs get to the front of the line of assistance versus someone like me, who was injured for the rest of my life while in the line of duty? Money for safe injection sites? How about money to bring proper medical care, both physical and psychological to those of us who have earned it first. And yes. I get that for some, addiction is not a choice. But myself, along with thousands of your fellow Canadians, served without question and we have been thrown to the side when we arrived back home. Yes everyone deserves treatment for their illness or addiction. But someone who climbed the drug ladder shouldn't get priority, simply because it makes someone else feel better that since they are helping an addict.
    How about helping me, with a bit more than a shitty pension and months to years wait for scans and specialist appointments. How many people in Canada die a day due to drug overdose vs those of us who choose to end our lives due to what we have done in service of our country, so they had the right to choose or not choose, to use drugs? #22aday

    • @chimrichalds5205
      @chimrichalds5205 Год назад

      @@recoveringbeautifully4920 So you're saying you were on Subs and had lasting effects? I'm currently on them and agree they're useless for serious imbalances, and are 'dirty' AF like Tramadol with a bunch of unknown mechanisms and risks. Subs were my first addiction in 2010, long before hard drugs and helped me get my life together, now though they barely work at best.
      I think my anxiety/insomnia/depression is worse since starting Subs in '19, and suspect the Naloxone is disrupting what little endorphines I have. It's not just absorbed IV but also mouth and nasal. Getting just Bupe (subutex) next Rx to see if it helps, if not I'm quitting it. I quit Heroin in early 2017 and never once craved it since. I'll never forget how relieved I felt once I ran out of money and knew the hell was finally over. WD was terrible but by the second week I was borderline manic for at least a month and felt amazing, I don't know why or how but I've never felt even 'normal' let alone hypomanic.
      I've been on 20-30 antidepressants, Ketamine, ECT, years of Kratom followed by a year of Heroin followed by 2 years of a ghetto Amphetamine. I'm seriously worried that my chemistry is permanently broken, and my Adderall suddenly stopped working after 2 years of working great. I feel alone but maybe you can relate some. Glad you're clean,
      Subs were my first W/D ever, back in 2010 and while it was /slightly/ less dysphoric than Heroin, I laid in bed for 2 weeks straight before being able to sleep. I was only on 1.5mg/day but it was my first dependence. Heroin W/D was worse, but I was only up for 7 days and rapidly started feeling better from week 1 to week 2. I'm only against Methadone because it's too good and is too tempting for addicts as an easy out. It's a burden and often not much of an improvement. Every story of withdrawal was 5-6 weeks of acute severe W/D on par with any opioid followed by lasting dysphoria. I 100% understand why people go for it with legit chemical imbalance and I was briefly tempted, but everybody said it was WAY harder to get off than short-acting opioids so found themselves resigned to long-term use even when they didn't want it.

      Now I could be wrong, but from what I know you don't get free drugs at safe injection sites. At least not the ones they are trying to put up in my state. Safe injections sites are for people to get clean needles and be able to use in a place that is off the streets and away from people having to witness it. It is supposed to make things "safer' for addicts and for the people who live in the neighborhoods where they are using on the streets. So I think that maybe parents of teens and young adults, don't want to know that they can get access freely to those sites and it might cause them to later become addicts. Or that they could go to work on the substance and potentially harm themselves or others. 🤷🏽‍♀️Imo

    This is one of the BEST and most thorough documentaries i have watched on RUclips and i scarf these down.. i'm literally running out of drug documentaries and this showed on my feed. I must say it encapsulates beautifully all of the problems surrounding this epidemic. I'd like to add that this crisis only happens because of lobbyists and people who don't care about anything other than capitalism. Everyone is connected. Yes, some with money and some through community.. that's what makes me sad because when looking at the Americas it's all black of white, you vs us, democrats vs republicans, but in reality it's segregation because of federal laws and people making money off of the population, not caring or some even not being able to empathize. I've never had an addiction with opiates but i like to learn to understand why it happens. I've shown interest in this topic for educational purposes and all it showed me is countries with poor health systems (might i add i live in Europe) and those countries are the ones that like to profit off of insulin as much as methadone and it's sad to watch people resort to opiates because either of lack of knowledge, being raised hardcore christian and ''away from reality'' (no hard feelings, everyone has their right for personal beliefs), being evicted because the prices keep going up and most importantly because of lack of social security and help of taxpayers money to help prevent this from growing. Rich politicians probably also have drug addictions and sticking their necks out would make them be replaced by maybe even more horrible people with ''traditional views'' aka conservatism towards any and all change. The need for the Portugal approach is so great that spreading awareness to a mass like publishing this documentary is a must to reverse the effects.
    And as the video beautifully and tragically depicts that we can't reverse the deaths of so many, we can affect the quality, overdose prevention, education and viral and bacterial screenings and safe environments. Not just for drug addicts but for the WHOLE population. In my country insulin is free, methadone is free, checkups are free, we have people on raves that help with overdoses and provide a safe space and guidance how to get through it and it alleviates stress from a lot of medical workers, coroners , etc.
    A full body screening for STD's and STI's is approximately 200€ in a private lab. And just a town over, back in the 80's and 90's there was a huge scare about heroin epidemic and everyone feared going there especially at night because of the stigma and it not being publicized in the right way.. now, 25 years later that town is busting with tourists, the homeless have a place they can stay and if you're a single mom with 2 kids you'll get at least 600€ a month from the state and they will work with you to get a job, applies to single men as well, because we have the system working for us not us working for the system. I'm happy to live in a country (yes we too have corruption) that won't charge me more than 35€ a month to be insured and if i break my arm i won't be in debt so a lot has to do with the social standards and access to supplies. Money will ALWAYS be an issue, but extending an olive branch to your neighbor is the least we can do, because if it was us in need and shame and living with trauma and guilt of out past that was put onto us by our surroundings, we'd feel grateful for anyone asking us how our day way and being human and humane are two different things. Take care kids!

    Excellent documentary mate, really eye opening stuff. It’s changed my perspective on safe consumption site, and as no longer against it. You can see the essential need they fill in every community. I would like to focus on parenting for once tho. I think parents have the most important job in our society, which is raising a child. The lack of capable parenting, is something that is obvious and alarming to me. We need to have a serious discussion and perhaps more consequences against families that are negligent with their kids. I am not totally opposed to parents needing to show proof of financial resources prior to having a child, we can’t keep bringing people into this world, and already have them climb an uphill battle. For as long as we have our beloved rights and freedoms we truly have to bear the responsibilities of our actions.

    Harm reduction practices basically create space and recognition for people's humanity and pain.. its like saying we see you and we're here to love you and support you and help you return to that felt sense of safety. There's profound collective healing on the otherside of strengthening the foundation of community connectedness. Protecting, nurturing, empowering and pouring into the vulnerable and/or marginalized members of our societies

    In my country there’re a lot of laws regarding smugglers, dealers/suppliers and abusers. 1. Smugglers are immediately executed (beheaded in public to be exact) because they’re the source of the destruction and problem. 2. Dealers/suppliers if it’s their first time then they’re either jailed, fined or whipped but if it’s their second time then that’s it, they’re also executed. 3. Drug abusers are never executed because the government recognizes their illness therefore they’re either treated or jailed (if they refuse treatment then they’re locked up, if they choose to get treatment then they’re sent to treatment centers) and if they’re immigrants they get deported. Alcohol is also illegal here and to be honest, I’d never want that to change because I can’t imagine how far the problems would go if the country is more exposed to these things, our youths are already struggling and are affected when it’s illegal and the consequences are inevitable.

    The first thing they have to change is the mind set of people like the old guy that intro this program; he relates the not-enough funding to shelter addicts to getting evicted,really, so screw landlords paying mortgages and keep the deadbeats in the homes while others pay for it, those tree huggers are the ones that have caused all of these waves of drug addiction both in Canada and the USA but they won't admit it, we have to force this reality down their throats, these derelicts are asking for funding to administer drugs, drug dealers must be having a party seeing government money used to make sure their consumers are healthy to continue stealing and pilishing the communities so they can buy their products, wow how low can we go in western societies!

    This is a wonderful documentary and thank you so much for educating us. However, I'm still confused. Why are we not searching for the cause of this increased addiction rates? Why are we not looking at the factors driving our population towards this? I'm truly convinced that if there were more programs that taught people trades, coping, socializing, assertiveness, sports, music, or any other kind of activities that promotes thinking, learning and discovering of your potential and passion, how to deal with your own mind and how to establish goals and follow them, maybe, just maybe, people would focus in this, instead of on drugs.
    I might be naive about this, but I've seen drugs from very up close in dear friends And these are the things that saved them and helped them get back to their feet.
