I had no idea about this show until I had a bad autism day and was desperately searching for a "brain numbing" cartoon to take the edge off my oversensory. Pony Life popped up like a life preserver and sent me drifting down the river to calm. It was goofy, pointless and wholesome. It's become a fast favourite for me and my flatmate on bad days to just sit and relax and turn off our brain with. We love the stupid jokes and bright colours. It really does help take your mind off reality.

@@limeyell0w945 For me personally a bad day with my autism involves oversensory, which for me includes extreme sensitivity to touch, sound and light or colour. Having certains fabrics touch my body feels like needles stabbing my skin, certain sounds or loud audio can be like nails on a chalkboard and too bright of lights or even vibrations can send me into multiple panic attacks or what my friend calls "autism gremlin" where my brain kind of shuts down and I become unresponsive for hours unless I'm crying or screeching during the painful stage. For me it can last from an hour to a full day. Those are usually my bad days and thankfully don't occur as much now that I'm older and have learned coping tricks to speed up recovery. Cartoons, darkness and quiet is often a lifesaver. Other times the squeaky voices and bright colours are not lol

Quick correction is that the 2-D animated pony series on RUclips for G5 is NOT the main series. It's a youtube kids series that uses the characters. The actual series is going to be on Netflix starting this fall along with that special from May.

Cutie Marks definitely tied more into talent and passion. Its like when an artists first learns that they're good at art, or when a track star finds out they're good at running. It's why personally, the cutie mark crusaders never made a whole ton of sense to me, cause all three did have clear individual talents and passions, (Scootaloo with her Scotter, Sweety Bell with baking, and Applebloom was essentially the same as applejack) and yet still never got theirs. I think that's where the whole destiny got mixed in and confused people.

professional published media critic here: imo, critique should focus on what the show is trying to do. this show is trying to be goofy and entertain, so going light on it makes sense. it is accomplishing its goals, and it seems to be doing them well! a show that takes itself REALLY seriously is going to have, usually, more opportunity to fail at what it's trying to do. when i see people saying something is bad because it doesn't do what THEY want it to do, like... that's a problem with the critic, not the art.

Completely agreed, wil. Just like you, I always judge and review a show according to it's tone (fun and relaxed, or serious). It's really not fair to harshly beat down and criticise a piece of work, whether it is a kid's cartoon, family movie or whatnot, that is only trying to be fun and entertaining; for instance.
The one thing I hate about many present-day RUclips/Internet movie/cartoon critics is that they rate and hold up these fun animated media to such a high standard, as if they were an Emmy-award winning live action drama series; which often leads to extremely hateful, ignorant, biased and negative videos/blogs on said media.
What you said perfectly describes how every media critic should act when it comes to family, children's media, for example. Thank you for saying this.
I think my favorite fan theory for this show is that it's what the Pinkie Pie from Equestria Girls thought Equestria was like.
As for the series itself, I think it's fine, like if Hasbro said that THIS was G5, I'd probably be angrier with it. But it isn't so I'm just kinda meh about it.

Actually the youtube G5 series is a side series since the main series will be on Netflix. Yup that's how they decided to do things. Nice to see a vid about Pony Life :) Was a harmless fun watch in my opinion
Make Your Mark lacked a lot of substance. Hopefully the new episodes in September are better written.

@@lilj362 Netflix doesn't hate animation at all, the problem is that they throw their money at many things at once and expect to earn back their big spendings quickly. The result is that they have been feeling the hits. Its great that they want to fully encourage creators and pay them everything they need but they also can't forget that they have mouths to feed and need money to stay operational. They need to find a good balance rather than act like they have unlimited funds
I will admit that while Pony Life was weird, it had it's share of funny,wacky and adorable moments. it may not have been great but it was entertaining in it's own right.
Deep MLP lore time: Pony Life is actually a canon, alternate timeline to Friendship is Magic.
In the third volume of the MLP manga, which is set after the events of the final episode, Discord sets up a scavenger hunt where he sends the Elements of Harmony (from before when the Mane 6 found them) to different dimensions and sends the future Mane 6 back in time to find the elements and restore the timeline back to normal. They succeed, but they end up turning into their Pony Life counterparts.
Anyway, read the MLP manga, it's super cute and a lot of fun.

I definitely wouldn't discount this theory. As a pony fan from the 90s - in secret because my mom was NOT about to let her son have anything girl coded lol - I NEVER saw MLP reach an audience like FIM did and it was in that wave of adult men kind've commandeering these child aimed fandom spaces and making them a bit precarious for those audiences. I didn't even share MLP as an interest with my niece that it was intended for because I was genuinely paranoid she would run into some sort of untagged adult fan material or interact with adult men who couldn't behave themselves in a respectful way when talking to/interacting with kids and that maybe becoming a problem in our own relationship.
I'm not saying this show was made specifically to piss off and scare away those older adult male fans who would scoff at it BUT 'pony life' is the exact kind of show she would have liked as a young child and arguably closer to a meme meets older generation cartoon style in being generally lighter and episodic.
Radically shifting the art style occasionally also helps them create demand for new sets of toys. Has to be different enough so parents can't just say "you already have one of those."
I don't really know if your theory at 10:43 makes sense entirely cuz if they want to cleanse the fan base of older fans, why make a movie that was honestly pretty good with so many questions left at the end so we know that there will be more to come back to later on to get the answers to those questions.
What happened to Twilight and the other alicorns since they're presumed to be immortal? Are they in hiding? Were they defeated by some villain? If so, was that the same villain that caused all of ponykind to hate the other races? If it was done on purpose, what was the point? Because it didn't seem like Equestria was attacked after being weakened in that way like seen in the Gen 4 finale. If it wasn't done on purpose, how were all the races divided that way to begin with? Why are we just hearing about these crystals now? Did ponies not know of their existence back in Gen 4? What happened to Discord? And WHAT. HAPPENED. TO THE WINDIGOS?! Because according to Gen 4 with the way all three pony races were split up, they should all be dead! (I have a lot of questions personally 😅)
Anyways, with questions like those left unanswered, I find it hard to believe that genuine fans would completely abandon the franchise because of spin-off like Pony Life or Tell Your Tale. Ik I ignored pony life but still looked into the Gen 5 stuff so I imagine other people would do the same. And one last thing: I understand that it might he hard to cater to such a vastly different kind of demographic than what was originally planned along side with the originally planned demographic of children, but why try to actively get rid of them? They're still willing to give them money at the end of the day.

@@idiot-rabbit No TTG is amazing. Have you seen the episode In and Out. The Titans are plotting to blow up the Hive tower. Robin disguises himself as red x to break in and plant the bomb. It trunrs out the hive has tons of cool stuff so he kept putting off the explosion. The other titans found out too sp they pretend to be villains to take advantage of the Hive's belongings. How is that not funny.

While the show’s interesting, I will never understand what the ACTUAL HAY they were thinking with the pony life dolls. THEY LOOK LIKE CATS! And this is coming from someone who likes the reboot style of FiM figures xP

@@jeanmilleisen9378 I'm assuming they mean the Pony Life ones with snap on clothing that were "horses" (big quotation marks since they look more like cats or dogs) contorted to stand on their hind legs. "Smashin' Fashion" was the name of the line. Apparently you could get them to stand like normal horses, but the packaging just showed them on their hind legs in human clothes.

currently, there are 2 MLP series airing right now for gen 5. a CG series on Netflix and a 2d series on youtube. both are ok but have a hard time fitting in due to the love for gen 4.

i havent watched it yet so take this with a grain of salt but, it just seems like a condensed version of a regular episode. learning a lesson at the end, crazy comedy. just seems like it fits. you could probably take any episode from season one and put it in this format and itd work great
i just want to know if its canon tho, and if it is where or when it takes place. the modern tech might place it closer to the new series that has modern tech i think. like a transition phase. not sure tho. still have to finish mlp friendship is magic before i check the new one out
I was shocked too by the lazy animation and stories of the 2D webisodes from MLP New Generation. XD
There was so much efforts into Pony Life with the chara design, the humour, the jokes... It was kinda fun! But so much underrated because it felt like a injure to MLP fans of the main series. But honestly, it was a good silly series to enjoy (bit by bit, to not watching entirely in one time) when you just wanna have some fun and joy.

Honestly your "cast a wide net" theory makes a lot of sense for G5. You got the pony life-styled tell your tale shorts which appeal to both pony life and early g4, you got make your mark which appeals to a much younger demographic, and you got the comics which appeal to adult fans of g4 and answer questions that the movie set up.
There's some great stuff going on with independent publishers basically being middlemen for authors. Some books like Dowry of Blood or The Atlas Six are getting super popular (Even if the books are kinda shit in some cases) but these indie publishers basically get to sell off the publishing rights to the Big Five Publishers and can turn around and use that money to pay their former authors a big bonus for being good at writing and also bank a massive royalty check that'll help build their business creating more publishers in the space.
At the same time the big publisters are also crumbling internally as the junior editors are doing the work of senior editors and all of their senior editors are being fired or retiring losing years of publishing experience that isn't being taught to these burnt out junior editors. By the end of the decade we could see a complete collapse in the publishing industry as it's been for at least the last seventy years because it's too old and impossible to change. They can't predict trends because they're used to being the only way something can get popular. The taste makers are crumbling and a bunch of tweens with bad taste in literature are circumventing the whole process. It's great, honestly. They should all burn for that price fixing scheme they had going with Amazon.
Quick note: Cause you asked why Fluttershy had hearts around her head when talking to Discord and if they’re trying to make them a couple, Fluttershy and Discord are actually canonically a couple by the end of the main g4 series.

I'm sure there's dozens of comments on this but here's one more: Yeah, we're getting a "main" CGI series on Netflix in September. Make Your Mark. There's a Make Your Mark pilot/special out right now! Also, you MIGHT want to also check out the G5 IDW comics, or at least look into spoilers, they might surprise you.
G5 is WAY more complicated and splintered right at the start than G4 was. I'm not even sure if the CGI Movies will be the "actual" "main" part of this franchise or not. Is this going to be like the Trolls franchise? I don't know.
I DO think I personally like Tell Your Tale the G5 RUclips show better than Pony life, though. It...just feels more comfortable in this 5 minute format. Pony Life might be more ambitious in some ways, but it's straining against the 5-minute time limit. It uses multi-parters and overarching stories as a bit of a crutch.
BUT, Pony Life is a little surprising. It has story arcs. There's something of a overarching plot, especially in Season 2. It's SLIGHTLY more thought-out than it looks. It's biggest sin is...I don't think it's that funny.
Oh, and the special powers the Mane 6 only have in this show are called "Adorabilities". I think that only came up in a interview or something.

What i cannot stand of both animated 2D series(Pony Life and the new gen of MLP) is the animation itself
I cannot take it, they don't even look like ponies anymore, and the stories are not as complex and thoroughly thought as the G4 series, so it does not compensate in regards of the unlikable style of animation, so i just kinda ignored the "PL" series because of it, i know it was published on youtube but as soon as i saw the previews on my feed i literally picked anything else out of spite of that style that i simply CANNOT TAKE, as an artist myself. (My pfp is not mine btw but my point still stands)
So i will not watch it, but thank you for doing this little dive in just so i do not have to waste my time with it, bc i know i will not like it, i'm that sorta guy XD

Man the g5 cartoon looks bad. I already wasn't a huge fan of the g4 style personally but it was polished and well done, the g5 one looks like a mess. And agreed that it looks like Steven Universe a bit, which was a style I also never liked even though I personally did like the show back in the day.
Pony life in comparison looks.... well, weird but at least it was somewhat unique.
I know it's unpopular but my personal favorite gen of ponies was g3. Yes, the cartoons were pretty awful but the toys themselves nailed the idea of actually looking like Ponies while also being cute.

I'm with you, I knew the g5 show wasn't going to look NEARLY as good as the movie did, but... I wasn't expecting the difference to be THAT drastic. I'll take g5 looking like Pony Life over the actual chosen art style. What works for one show won't necessarily work for another. I think the Steven Universe/Gravity Falls type of art style only works when most of the characters are humanoid. Those faces just don't work on ponies.
Keep in mind that the animated series shown for G5 in the video is the RUclips series. The main series will be on Netflix starting in September.

You should check out huntik! It used to be on Netflix but was removed I think it might be on RUclips. It’s similar to pokemon with having creatures that can fight for you but in this show it’s more of a fighting alongside their “owners.” It’s about a kid who’s dad vanished and he is suddenly exposed to the world of huntik to look for his dad.
It’s genuinely a super enjoyable show and has a devastating twist for our main gang

Stupid Theory I Made For Fun + I Haven't Even Watched The Series:
Pony Life takes place at the same time as Generation 5. Generation 5 takes place centuries and centuries after the original series, but the movie (I haven't watched the show) doesn't mention a lot of elements that should supposedly still be around. Stuff like the various other races that made peaceful relations with the ponies, or the statue of the three villains from the finale. The biggest one for me probably being Discord. The timeless being of chaos who should be alive hundreds of years later.
Well you see, Discord is co-dependent on Fluttershy who needs her friends to function properly. So, instead of letting all his friends (mainly Fluttershy) die, he would seal them in a timeless dimension, probably the one in which he lives in. Now the ponies can live nice mundane lives that will keep Discord satisfied and happy.
Any pony outside the main characters who appear? Easy, Discord brings them back from the dead. Discord has the motivation, willpower and actual power to do this. He needs his friendship with the others, he depends on it, it's the only thing keeping him a good person. He has no qualms over doing morally incorrect things if he believes it's for a good reason (example being the series finale). And he has each power he needs. He can make the world function on different rules, he has his own pocket dimension, he has been shown to mind control ponies before, he even brought a pony back from the dead once. Even stuff like de-aging them, while not a power he has shown, was established to be Alicorn-level magic, and he certainly has Alicorn-level magic.
The only thing I'm unsure about are the Original Characters. I don't think Discord can create sentient life like that. However, he could be acting as the Original Characters. Pretending to be them to spice up the plot a bit, he has been shown to be able to duplicate himself, as well as shapeshift into ponies. So he could be pretending to be all the Original Characters in the series as well.
We know this happens during the same time period as Generation 5 because while Generation 4 didn't have modern technology, Generation 5 certainly does. One of the main characters is a social media star!! Which means Discord has been updating his time loop bubble of friendship with the times, as to give them more variety. So they could essentially be his own personal never-ending friend group.
Not sure what this is one yet, but I’m so excited!!

One day, my parents and I were eating dinner together and watching Star Trek Discovery. We enjoyed the episode. Then, my dad suggested we check out the first episode of Pony Life. It was SO MUCH BRIGHTER and SO MUCH MORE SATURATED than the dark grays and blues of Discovery that my eyes hurt from the shock. Other than that, it was a fun episode. I'm not a fan of Pinkie Pie exploding because I find it kind of disturbing and dumb (so I'm like... the opposite of inflation people lol), but otherwise it was fine. I wasn't really pulled in, though, and I don't think my parents were either.

The weirdest show that can be quite terrifying at times, is The Twisted Wiskers Show. Its based on those big eyed animal cards.
i feel like fans' tolerability based on favorite character from best to most annoying goes like: applejack, rarity, fluttershy, twilight, pinkie pie, rainbow dash. as ive gotten older me and my fiance have kinda realised that rarity and applejack are the most tolerable and enjoyable to watch for us as adults whereas they were not as likeable when we were kids. also rainbow dash is a little unbearable and the default favorite for like a lot of the annoying Brony bronies

I knew about Pony Life When it was coming on. Some fans were upset that My Little Pony was being given the Teen Titans treatment. That was another critically acclaimed series that ended suddenly and was replaced with a zany counterpart. The biggest difference between the two shows is that My Little pony actually ended conclusively while Teen Titans fans were robbed of everything their show was building up to.
Nice to see this get some respect.

12:55 there’s a show I watch called amphibia, and the 3 human characters in it use phones (they’re like 13 so to be fair it would be weird for them not to) and the main character only uses her phone every like 5 episodes to like watch a tv show, text people, or show pictures of old things she did back home so they can get a reference on what the plot of the episode is about. It’s convenient, and sure they take a few selfies but later in the show the pictures are shown like a photo album to the main character’s friend. Not for lol random humor. If you were ever into Steven universe back when it was airing, you may have hated the “filler” between plot episodes (but you probably know now that it wasn’t filler hopefully). This is filler Straight up, it was released in between to generations and was really only made for the money and was just trying to milk just enough toys off of that show before the new generation began (look ok, hasbro is hasbro and won’t give a crap if grown men are into mlp. They will just find it really inconvenient for them and not really care)
I love Pony Life it was so funny and I used not to like the chibi animation but now I'm used to the animation. Also I thought I was the only one who liked Pony life but I found out that some RUclipsrs like it. I don't like Pony life as much as Friendship is magic but I do love Pony life. Also I never seen season 2 of Pony Life I didn't know that season 2 was released.
Ever since seeing someone else point it out, the Tell Your Tale characters literally look like humans. I can't unsee it now. 😭 It's such a shame because a whole bunch of sticker sets came out long before the cartoon did and the different art styles they used look so much more cute and appealing. 😢

Underappreciated? I'd say this series deserves the reputation it garnered. I can't forgive the fact that this show exists after Hasbro sacrificed a majority of their other franchises at the time; ie, Hanazuki: Full of Treasures and Equestria Girls.

Isn't pony life the same concept, Teen Titans did with their "Go" and teh Thundercats reboot (2) that also went the wacky goldfish attention style?

I never watched this show, because it came out so quickly after the original that l didn't have time to miss the world and characters. Then l heard people talk about it, and decided the style of the plots definitely weren't for me.
You would prob like laid back camp (or yuru camp) wholesome like mlp but with some nice plot
The problem with Pony Life is that Friendships Is Magic set the bar for the quality of writing and animation in My Little Pony media so high that Pony Life’s intentional failing to meet the bar makes it unwatchable.

I knew about this show, the designs are cute but I do admit that it wasn't for me(and it's not a bad thing).
Kids are having shorter attention spans and having shorter things looks like the way to go, I don't know if it's a bad or a good thing or both.
But I do agree, Marketing folk does avoid a lot of risks because it's always 50-50 to go well or terribly wrong, but for an in-between thing it's not a bad show.
I DON'T LIKE THE NEW G5 2D designs, they don't look like ponies at all, the concept art that was going around was way better and timeless, the new 2D show looks so generic that it's sad, the backgrounds, on the other hand, look beautiful I love the art direction on the backgrounds looks better than the 3D show that is coming up.
So far G5, at least for me, is in limbo, they want to be a continuation of G4 but it's its own thing and creating new lore that makes it more confusing than it had to be.
But I do have a theory that Twilight was the one that brought Smartphones to Equestria when she went to the “human“ dimension.
I only found out about Pony Life in Boomerang I think. Barely watched though 'cause I didn't bother remembering when it airs and there's barely anything good on TV. Disney doesn't exist in southeast asia anymore, Cartoon Network mainly shows Teen Titans Go, and my cat broke the wire of the TV so I don't watch cable TV anymore.... where was I going with this?
