Do you agree with the Press Freedom Ranking for *your* country?
No not for india
When a few multinational corporations strangle independent reporting...the West is ranked way too high.
Yes for Poland
Highly disagree with Brazil's one, we live in a democracy, any reporter can say whatever they want, about the government or anything... You'll basically never be arrested here for simply exercising the journalist profession, very different from Russia, Kazakhstan, Venezuela etc...
Yes, I agree that in my country press freedom is low, but I also noticed that you literally erased Belarus, Russia and Ukraine from Europe, in 11:48. Well, I understand about Russian, but what about others? And also funny part: You erased Russia, but not all: what about part in Scandinavian peninsula?
P.S. Overall video is good, its helpful to see that someone cares about my country, thx for video!
Congrats to Eritrea, I don't even know it was possible to be worse in press freedom than North Korea.
Oh yeah, they are a massively messed up country. The comedy film “The Dictator” is based on Eritrea.
Fun Fact: Eritrea is one of two countries that still practice “Taxation without Representation”, or in other words, taxing its citizens, even when they are living abroad, simply because they were born in Eritrea and have citizenship there. Bet you can’t guess the other country...

At the first glance when I saw Brazil as red I immediatly assumed it to be a political index (almost worthless). Brazil's freedom of press is on the constitution and there's no legal barriers to journalists. However looking as how the index is constructed taking in consideration many variables as violence, corruption, media monopolies, etc. it looks quite accurate. It is sad to see how limited freedom of press is around the world, even the most "free" countries as NA and EU has some significant problems.
Freedom of press is on Brasil constitution, however the Brazil Supreme Court has misinterpreted it to arrest journalist Oswaldo Eustáquio and even the deputy Daniel Silveira.
@@tiagorepublicano Hate speech and defamation aren't covered on the brazillian constitution, those people are the reason why Brazil is ranked so long on the index. Several key allies of Bolsonaro have been working to spread hate and threats towards their political opponents and are also attempting to undermine democracy by supporting a possible military coup. It makes sense for Brazil ranking to be so bad when you take into account that Bolsonaro has threatened several times to commit a coup d'état and regularly harasses political opponents.
@@Gamer-fz5gl
In Brazil it is not crime to say the truth, at least in Brazil's written law. Nevertheless if the truth is not favorable for that who rules, like Brazil Supreme Court (STF), they will bend the law to become that vague definition of hate speech, which it is today used to persecute opponents. Recently one accusation of corruption against Dias Toffoli reached the STF. They solely halted the investigation and filed the case.
@@tiagorepublicano The person you were talking about made several threats, insulted and spreaded various false rumours about those judges. A person who openly praises a dictatorship and regularly threatens ministers is a threat to democracy and free press.
The same thing would happen in any other country, even the USA, attacking/slandering a judge is something that can and will get you arrested.
Saying that your supreme courts bends the law is hypocritical given that Bolsonaro used an old "National Security" law to harass several of his political opponent who criticized him.
For the colombian one, is not correct to say the government isn't involved at all, most of the people in the government have strong connections with said illegal groups, and although the restriction to journalism is mainly due illegal factors, the people in the government are the ones backing it or encovering it. I'm colombian btw
Same with France, the reports clearly say that their low rating is mostly due to policemen throwing tear gas at journalists during protests and arresting them without evidence
IMHO, the main problem with this is list is, that press freedom is not the most important. What matters to me most is that journalism is objective. While lack of press freedom often leads to lack of objectivity, people often assume that abundance of freedom guarantees objectivity, which is not the case. There are many places where despite greater freedom journalists grow complacent and basically join the club with the government, even if they are not directly dependent, they stop being on the "people's team" and move to "government's team".
The shifts can be clearly seen, when a government or president unpopular with the media is elected - suddenly the amount of coverage of every decision or action that is made doubles up. Basically media shift and cover less abroad topic and devote more time to domestic ones. While in some cases it could be that the option unpopular with the media is simply worse and generates more scandals, the consistency with which it happens worldwide for me means that the personal preferences of journalists play a role as well.
Where I live is labelled as semi-free and we have noted a big drop in the ranking in recent years, but I personally think this was good for journalism as a whole - the quality of information I have access to increased IMHO.
Completely agree there.
I want to add something which should be going the same direction as your post :)
The news/"journalists" also might be influenced unknowingly to believe stuff or just forward news which is sent to them via big press agencies.
Lots of journalists might not even think about being used as media-puppets because of their environment and workload.
There's a really good advise from a swiss historian and peace activist (Daniele Ganser, also on RUclips), who wants the people to be "awake and aware" about what they read and from which sources it comes. this way one might be able to see 'frames' being build beforehand and also begin to question and start being skeptical. It's not that much about mistrust, but about being aware of what is presented and in which way.
Greetings from Germany.
This list kind-of measures objectivity. He mentioned some nations have state-controlled media, and others have media monopolies which can affect the bias of media.
My country is listed as semi-free, but most media are highly critical of the government, sometimes rightfully (they suck, I hate both main parties), other times even making shit up because they are funded by the opposition, so it's not even like they're on the government side. And their mockery of the government can get very offensive and sometimes even discriminatory, all in the name of freedom of press, and they feel like democracy has been attacked if a politician dares to make an angry tweet lol. At least right now that's what happens.
But when the party in charge swaps with the opposition, media still are critical but not as blatantly hateful and promoting hatred. Our socioeconomic situation in the past few decades has been so bad they can't just say everything's alright (although sometimes State media does, but barely anyone, less than 2%, watch that tv channel lol).
It all sucks, and I'm not sure who I hate more, the politicians or the journalists.
You'd better believe the press isn't free! It's USD 2.50 Monday to Friday and USD 3.99 on Sunday (not available Saturday) where I live
Thanks for writing the Netherlands in orange in the top ten. Our national color ;-)

I didn’t know my country had freedom press at risk. The last time I saw this ranking we had small issues. I hope this problems can be solved, in order to improve press freedom. Thanks for your video. Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱.
I think a country with too high or low press freedom is not a good country to live in.
Too free, media will make up craps or cause arguments (some disagreement is good but arguments are not)
Too unfree, it's hard for the government to work well.
@@gordonchao3074
You are giving to much importance to media. So most yellow countries are not good enough for you? That includes the US and Canada and Asia. You just dont understand how the world really works, most people dont care about media at all.
@@ericktellez7632 Did you read all parts of my comment? I don't understand what you are commenting about?
yes, really sad timing for this video, last year and since who knows when, Chile was at the "Small issues" category, I wonder what exactly made our performance worsen a little, I do know tho, although freedom of press, at least in social media is totally free, but in TV only around 5 main channels monopolize the whole picture in the industry and that can only go wrong
@@gordonchao3074 Huh? With a low ranking, it’s hard for the government to work well? How? The countries that have low rankings, they control what their media reports. They primarily only have government funded state run media. Not independent or even corporate. I also don’t think there is such thing as to free. If anything, you’re the more free that it is, the more of the truth that you’re getting. When media isn’t financed by government or corporations, they have little to no outside influence.
Gotta love seeing your own country in the biggest decrease category. And I should say it is totally deserved seeing what happened in the past year. I could easily see it becoming even worse, and that’s sad when you take into consideration the fact that my country, Lebanon, was considered the “most free” between all of his neighbors.
It still is tbh. Hopefully it gets better. U just need to remove al the sectarian ideas and laws and whatnot. Im syrian and i LOVE Lebanon (although some Lebanese people...lets just say were not the kindest to me and my family lol)
It's sad to see that the only free country in the middle east is Cyprus, And even Turkish Cyprus is FAR from free. People can argue that Israel has press freedom but... that would be a joke. It's "good" relative to the rest of the middle east but for a small country... Especially a Westernized Democratic country, it's horrific.

Here in Brazil, we have a lot of problems affecting the freedom of the press.
3 main reasons IMO:
A- Frequent attacks by the government.
B- Violence in general.
C- and maybe the main reason - the massive concentration of the power. It's said that only 6 families control all the press inside this continental country.
Now, the real trap here: Reasons A and C maintain each other!!! Because government should be responsible for better regulation. But how can we believe that the intentions behind the government's actions are good when there are so many unjustified attacks?
It seems we have here a terrible war happening into the darkness. On one side we have the richest people controlling the press and on the other, some politicals with dictatory ways. They use poor citizens to fight each other in a cold war. Very sad 😭.

As a Greek, this seems legit. As you said in the begging, not due to government bans or anything, but definitely due to payrolls.
Always, the governing party has majority control over the media, and complete control of the national broadcasting company, in TV and radio at least, I can't say I read the newspaper so I don't really know about that, the free to air channels are owned by moguls, that promote their interests, no matter true or false, and lastly, there's always widespread panic. The Netherlands is also following that path in a rapid pace.
@Moljo Never said that everyone criticizing government measures is a conspiracist. That itself is totally fine.
Most (or *many*) people at those demonstration are though. And attacking reporters in any way - be it physically or verbally - because of that is simply NOT okay, it's fucked up. And also goes right against what they say they want: _Freedom_
Freedom includes _freedom of press_ though.

In Australia there are a lot more concerns to press freedom than just the lack of a constitutional guarantee.
Being from Brazil I wasn't expecting this bad of a position. The more national press is at least relatively free. It used to have issues of pluralism, but not so much anymore.
Then I realized that the problem is probably on the regional scene. There is a lot of state level and municipal level biased media. Actually, in some regions the political elite basically monopolize the mediums.

The term "press freedom" is such a wooly term that if you asked 100 people what it meant, you would get 100 different answers. Nobody seems to know what is exactly meant by freedom of the press. When you see these press freedom indices the factors that are often considered include: degree of government censorship, government intervention, private ownership of media firms, harassment of journalists by government or by other persons, the ease of news gathering, freedom of information legislation, etc. When I studied journalism, one thing that was raised for discussion was "no prior restraint" which means there should be no restriction of the press before publication. To quote from my handout for the unit I studied: "If, however, that publication involves a breach of the law, then writers and printers responsibility should suffer punishment in full. Thus freedom of the press is not an absolute right. It denotes a right of freedom to publish, but not a right to prevent punishment for what is published when it breaks the law."
So for press freedom, what is it exactly? Did the drafters of the First Amendment to the US constitution know precisely what was meant by freedom of the press, at the time it was drafted in the 18th century? Was it freedom to publish and/or freedom of news gathering, freedom from harassment, etc
There is an error around 4:40. It shows both Chile and Argentina as orange...but the Argentinian exclave at the bottom is colored red.

The place with the oldest cities is the origin of civilization not the place where the idea of companies poped up!!!

In Bulgaria the situation is indeed very bad, definitely worse than many other countries, but there is something I don't completely agree with in this ranking.
The "free", independent journalists that are generally anti-government, anti-status quo are oppositional but most of them in a very defined and a very specific way, they complain regularly about the situation but they are also very biased themselves in their reporting when they try to portray the situation and when you look objectively at the matter and weigh in on both sides of the spectrum if you are neutral and unbiased.
Yes, in order to be free, everyone should have freedom of expression. In fact journalists use Facebook to express their opinion free, but the national media outlets are state-owned or if private, linked with state ownership, very close to the oligarchs and whoever tries to express their discontent of what the government does, they get prosecuted and the general prosecutor has limitless judicial power, even more so than the ministers and prime minister.
Because some of the Bulgarian public are tied with governmental jobs they aren't keen in seeing changes and while this is not the majority of the population of the country, it is a significant percentage, maybe about 40% and for this reason the bad score that we have gets reproduced year after year. As a person who has lived abroad and have seen the broader definition of freedom, I would love to see my country improve, but in order to have the deterioration stop, journalists need to do a better job themselves too and not be afraid of asking the question they have in mind. Only very few dare and I follow mostly them, they're on an island basically...
Im sure that everyone expected Norway, sweden, denmark and Finland at the top :p

The think about the relationship between countries is that it's between leaderships , the populations are not consulted , so if they shut down the complaints of the populations and prevent them to think and speak against them , any leadership can argue that the population is very happy under it's rule and use this argument for maintaining in power (while they don't have the right to say that their government is flawed)
@@madmouse4400 Like what i mentioned, do respect each other..
"Our" ways = Emperor's way.
@@mr.adamvlad367 The problem is authoritarian countries are attacking democracies (Russia attacking Ukraine, China threatening Taiwan, North Korea attacking South Korea etc.).

Can you make a video about every countries martial arts
why do you point to geograph. direction and then name them by geopolitiical region?

7:19 Romania in Spain is also pretty weird :D
That’s odd; Chinese people on YT tell me China’s press is totally free.
They lied
Not only that, they're upset about other nation's press. Free Cheng Lei.

They are not even allowed to use YT in their country , while their government can , they obviously lie
Thks for showing about Romania. I am from there.

Argentine Tierra del Fuego, the Malvinas/Falklands and South Atlantic Islands are in red for some reason.

Thank you Boy
100% true for India
India, a nation where journalist are fired or thrown in prison for raising questions for people against government and Separatists who keep barging about separating Punjab, Kashmir, Northeast or South outta india are treated like youth leaders.
bad press freedom doesn't necessarily mean the country is a bad place to live, but it would be one part in overall quality of life scoring.
No it's mean that that place is nothing more than a dictatorship
@@GTAandApplechannel singapore pretty low at term of freedom and have very strick rule in society yet this country better than many country that have greater freedom

what's going on with the tip of argentina?
I'm from Poland and I would say that orange is really accurate. Let's just say about many situations where journalists are brought to trial because they criticized government or opposition. Also it's good to say that one of the biggest tv station is under total control of government
Sadly it's true at the moment, we can only hope that will change with the next election

This map is pretty stupid. It has areas in South America different to its country like falklands red. It also has an Australian island in red and a united Sudan
I wish you mentioned the concentration of media being owned by Murdoch and Fairfax in Australia.
10:21 Malaysia is the country with the largest drop in press freedom, falling 18 places over the year. This is unsurprising, since the current government coalition ruling Malaysia is NOT voted in by the public, but rather, formed through backdoor negotiations among (former) opposition and cross-over MPs, usurping power from the coalition which won the previous election. As a result, they are more authoritarian in order to hold on to power.
We neep help here in the Philippines from our president!!!
The USA should be red..Press here is mostly very partial
Yeah, and that's because they have a freedom to be partial.
They are also very Partisan
Thank you
it would be more interesting for the number of countries if you put in the number of people that live there
because the press freedom in monaco is far less important the for example the US
