- ■ Kevin Magnussen has been on the receiving end of things during the Miami GP, amassing a total of 35 seconds of penalty in the matter of 19 laps. However, his reckless driving - although nearing him to a race ban - is something that we could see a lot more often if something doesn’t change with the rules, and if this turns out to be the case, the question arises: Will a lot of drivers sacrifice their own race so that their teammate can score points? And more importantly, is there any way that the FIA can prevent this other than the long-accumulating penalty points?

What is your opinion about the driving style Magnussen used to protect his teammate for getting points?
THATS WHAT RACING IS ABOUT. It was brilliant and exciting.
Magnussen should be black flagged.
I think it isn't that hard to fix. Magnussen is driving like this to keep the car behind him behind him. When he cut the corner to break DRS rather than a 10 second penalty he should have been told to give up the position, just like if he'd have passed in that manor. If he refused then a driver through penalty would be assessed. If nothing is done this will escalate at the back of the grid where one car scoring is all you need to finish above the 'rest'.
I hate it when there is action/unpredictability on a race track I just want 20 cars to time trial for 2 hours keeping a safe distance from one another
No crash, collision; no harm, no foul. Stop making new rules. Do better job making calls according to the rules. This isn’t the floppy NBA

Hamilton takes out 2 drivers, no penalty. Magnussen never touches Hamilton, gets 35 seconds penalty.
Stroll can rear end someone during a safety carr, but Mag can defend DURING a race?
I think it is b*llshit, because Bottas did it multiple times for Hamilton by Mercedes. And K mag defends allways hard.
Alonso did it against Hamilton without defending anything in 21-22?
Perez did it for Verstappen too
The only ones to stay at home are the stewards. Sorry guys, you often are ruining a race. You have different degrees of penalties, depending on who's the guy. Let them race for gods sake!

As long as he drives defensively within the rules than its fine. Aggressive defense and offense are legal.
If they want to be very strict on defensive driving then they should do the same up front. Then we have no race.

Everyone talking about Magnussen, who got punished as per the current rules. Yet no-one mentioning Hamilton, who made a move seen in a low-ranking online sim race, flying down the inside into T1 from P12, causing a a domino effect, resulting in Norris being eliminated from the race, only to emerge in P8, with no penalty. I was expecting an instant ban after seeing it happen.
Verstapen raced exactly the same way Magnussen did, especially when he tried to fight for podium. Its was «just racing» before. Remember that drivers are allowed to push others out of track just because thats how verstappen raced 2-5 years ago. These days he doesnt have to fight a lot, he just drives past on straight. Comes to mind verstappen vs Leclerc in Austria 3 years ago
Yes, Max was worse but got away with it. His driving provoked many accidents. Magnussen is even more blatant.
Racing isn't just driving behind each other and giving way when an other driver approaches. The way Max and Magnussen drove is what we want to see. Not only driving around like sissies...

It will be a big shame if Magnussen is racing next year and Bearman misses out

The race incedent with sargeant was fully sargeants fault, but Kmag cant fart in the cockpit with getting 10 second penalty.
K-Mag did what his team asked him to do - how does that warrant a penalty against him personally? If he does what they want, he gets multiple penalties and possibly a race ban. If he doesn't do what they want, he gets kicked to the kerb in favor of someone more compliant. It's lose-lose for him.

Yeah, I don't know. From a driver/team perspective, the fact that 2 points could potentially mean $10mil in earnings, that's the root of the problem right there. Secondly, FIA should probably take responsibility for fatal flaws in car design that directly affect how race-able they are. What did they expect when they made these cars the size of a limousine and the only feasible way they have of overtaking is DRS? It's partially why drivers feel like they need to make desperate moves like the one Magnussen made on Logan to cause their crash in Miami. If he didn't attempt a move there, he'd be waiting 4-5 more corners until a DRS straight.

I would say the points were harsh except for one thing, the final time Magnessun went off the track to defend he came in really hard and ran into Hamilton's car. You should be allowed to defend, but never break track limits to do so as that isn't defending it is simply breaking racing rules. But to do so in such a manner that you are shoving another car out of the way with your own is far beyond anything, and points are deserved because of that behavior.
The only real blunder was not from Magnussen but from the organisation.
That was the SC situation where the SC did NOT catch the fromnt runner but the second..

Depending if t,he SC could have been on track in time before Norris passed along or not (the second option meant that the SC would come in one lap later) Norris would (first option) NOT have a free pitstop or (second option) at least not the track position at restart (second or third on track).
Not sure if that would differ the outcome but we had seen that Norris had problems woth passing Perez.
Oh..I loved how Magnussen and Lewis were racing. No reason for any other penalty for that driving ...
I'm a big kmag fan so im probably a bit biased on some things but I think kevin was extremely aggressive (and stupid) and didn't do well this weekend but penalties in my opinion are way too harsh this season and its ruining the race. F1 is not about racing anymore. Also the FIA seriously just hate him and treat him unfairly, compared to other drivers.

yeah why wasn't Hamiltons move in the first corner of the sprint race not penalised. He wreck 3 other peoples race because he saw a gap
In the Sprint, cry baby Hamilton wasn't penalized for his spearheading into Alonso that took out Stroll and Norris, watch it frame by frame Hamilton is not turning into the apex but torpedo Alonso and that's not aggressive driving? Max and Kvyat are masters of this art, good thing Max is out front where he is no longer a menace.

Hülkenberg isn't actually more consistent. Fact is kev more frequently scores points than Hülkenberg, but Hülkenberg scores more points when he does. Kevin is actually the most consistent of the two.

I wouldn’t trust the stewards to hand out sweet, let alone penalty points! The drivers are on the most part doing great with the equipment they’ve got and driving standards are really good these days. At the end of the day, it’s racing, and if anything the rules should encourage wheel to wheel action as much as possible, because that’s what fans want to see.
Mags races hard but not dirty. Him becoming as wide as he can to give his stablemate an advantage is legal be the letter of the law. He needn’t apologize for doing so.
You fix this issue by changing the point system. Make it resemble MotoGP or supercross point awards and you will get people fighting for points all the way down. It’s dumb that only 10 drivers get points. It absolutely removes all incentive to keep racing hard if you can get 10th. Stop with punishment to adjust the behavior and give incentives.
No. F1 doesn’t need or want participation points
I don’t think it’s participation trophy points. They don’t want to hand out money at the end of the year. They keep paying out to the top teams. It can be fixed but no one wants to make the hard decisions. If you want to see racing make refueling available

Kmag did nothing wrong. Just the track itself is bad for overtaking and its way to easy to "block" any overtakeing.
More points from up to 12th place and smaller cars with better tracks. Then we can have better racing.

Racing is a competition, not a parade. Perez defended pretty wildly to in 2021 against Hamilton. It's a part of racing in a team. Sergeant on the other hand could have been more aware of his surroundings. Magnussen probably gave him too much credit, probably thinking sergeant would know he was there. I've seen that scenario play out many times without a crash. Sergeant should have been watching his mirrors when he knows he's in a battle.

but they wanted drivers to go for it more in the sprint race. I don"t like how dirty they did Sainz again in the main race, he and Piastri touchet both times but the diference is that he gave way and Piastri didn"t.

Increasing the penalty wouldn’t do much. Multiple penalties should result in an immediate drive though.

The penalty system within F1 and does go adverse outcomes. The best one is the penalty for changing an engine goes down the more you use. Surely you should be penalised more for each engine.
What's the point of driving for a "team" if you can't drive as a team player...
I only have an issue when both cars are over the white line that's when it's gone too far and there needs to be penalties.

Instead of time penalty, get a loop or bypass they have to drive wich takes 5-10 sec. Then they are away from the track and racers can pass
Although it wasn't good racing, he was within the rules in that he knew the consequences and accepted them as part of the team strategy.
Do I want to see rule changes to stop that? Yes I suppose. But I also would like to see a category where the are basically no rules, just build a car that is the fastest you can design and build and get around the track the fastest way possible.
That would be outrageously expensive for sure and likely you'd never get enough teams to enter but if you could get 20 cars, just think of how different the engineering could be?

I am hughe fan off magnussen but i didnt like the defence when he goes out over lines the only penalty that will change ppl to not give back position is a drive thru that way will it not pay off not to give back position and defend that way

I don't understand if you get a time penalty you have to serve it immediately not when you chose ? As soon as you get one come in serve it .

Great driving by Kev. That's what makes racing so exciting and that´s why I like to watch it. I thought F1 is dead, but Kev proved it's not. What a shame he got penalties for that, he made the race.
I think it was amazing to watch 😂. It was a little aggressive but I think overall that is what makes for good racing.

Taking seconds off is fine. Driver points should only be handed out for wreck less driving that causes accidents. Similar to Hamilton diving to the inside at turn one at Miami causing drivers to retire.
As long as he's defending within the rules, Only moving Once on straights etc, It's just hard racing. Lewis needs to stop crying everyone is against him every race.
FIA is so unbalanced. This is an excuse to have more overtakes. Discouraging drivers to be more defensive for the sake of “viewership”.
Drivers shouldn't be penalised for driving defensively. Collisions are different, and putting someone else in danger is also not on. But apart from that he shouldn't be punished for playing the team game. Otherwise, what's the point? Just wave everyone through? I didn't see anything particularly aggregious when he was dueling with Hamilton.
Hamilton was "cool" with Magnussen's defence, however, I think if a driver is persistently performing illegal manoeuvres during the race, a drive-through penalty should be imposed to be taken on the next lap.
If the fia would have given Hamilton his 20 sec penalty, sooner, this was a verry simple penalty to give. Magnussen would have known and would not have defended this much
It's a double edge sword..... you should be able to defend your position but you should not cause wrecks or make a unsafe situation in the moment

They are racing teams. Checo gets lauded and named the Minister of defense for ensuring Verstappen wins. Kmag gets dumped on for doing everything he can to give his teammate a chance at 1 point?
When the drivers support it, team principles should keep their mouths closed. Their thoughts about driving are irrelevant at best.

I’m looking forward to next year so we can have whole season of races not being ruined by Magnussen. It’s not just Miami, his while career has been spent ruining the races of drivers who actually want to go fast. Every time it’s the same, as soon he pits the following ten cars are freed up to race. But by then the whole race has been turned into a bore-fest.
Every other driver tries to get ahead of the others, Magnussen tries to keep the others behind him. And he plays dirty to do it.

F1 is a teamsport, Its teamwork in my opinion...it happend before (recently Alonso-hamilton in Hungary for ocon win & Perez-Hamilton for the championship at Yas Marina.
Its like football, getting a yellow card to prevent a attack. You take it for the team. Sometimes you will get away with it but you also may risk a a red card.

Any driver likely to be out of the points with both a teammate in the points and a faster car behind should be discouraged from driving like this. If not, it will have cascading effects on the sport. Also, it wasn't just Hamilton who was held up. Say, Max has an engine change and starts P15. Then every driver with a teammate in the points should drive like K-mag. This is bad for the sport.
It’s easy… drive under GBR flag and you won’t get any penalties. If you add more rules, you’ll have more issues governing them. You add some then you must remove other ones.

Black& white flag is specifically for this, used for unsportsmanlike behaviour. It seems they are using it for track limit infringements these days. There is also the three strike system they use that goes with it. It is possible that you could tactically use the three strikes in order to tactically advantage your own or someone else’s race or to tactically disadvantage an opponent. Perhaps this type of driving should be dealt with the same way as weaving.
Conclusion is that there is an obvious difference between genuinely running off the track or whatever and tactically doing something. These races are supervised by vastly experienced stewards. There is a system of penalties available at each event, time penalties, drive through penalties and stop/go penalties. Incidents are analysed during races and this type of thing should be dealt with. It’s the lack of intervention which caused this specific situation. Ironically from my point of view I am guilty of feeling that penalties are too readily and harshly given, let them race etc however in this instance it seems that intervention was necessary but didn’t happen.

Meanshile, Hamilton is allowed to end the race of multiple drivers in turn one, lap one, of the race without penalty.
So u tell me if he is in front he can just turn in whitout looking in the mirror and if somebody is next to him they r at foult if they hit each others that way u will never be able to overtake anybody because the front runner can just turn into the guy that try to overtake because he was in front so u cant blame him . I have a licence to be flag post official i was told u need to leave enough space to race and what Logan did was taking the space away after Kevin was around half way up on hes side. He would have no chance to Bale out from it. If there had been a wall there he would have been in it. If u look at the second race when Kevin got hes first penalty the driver from behind was so far behind u can not blame Kevin for hitting him because Kevin was in front but still it was him getting the penalty why

The problem is the back markers NEVER will catch up to Red Bull given the rules. Until F1 changes and allows cars to be DEVELOPED over the year in a meaningful way it is just a parade. Until there are at least 3 teams with a real chance of winning each race F1 will continue to be a joke. I have stopped watching and know many others who also have given up on F1 for other series.

As always - people frustrated that the result of the rules isn't what they predicted when they came up with them. Again and again, we have the same situation where someone uses the rules in a manner that benefits their team that wasn't predicted when they came up with them... and once more, the dreaded safety car decided the outcome of a race.
Wer need to understand that the rules are going to be taken to the cleaners every once in a while - unless you give the race director wildcard black flag privileges "for the respect of the sport" and just swallow that some numbknuts can decide to push ourt a safety car at any time - just to spice things up.

I agree Kevin's style in general is quite aggressive, but he only did this to make sure Nico gets the points, and it really doesn't matter how many penalties Kevin gets because he's out of the race anyways.
Although, he does need to watch out with the total penalty points he has for a potential raceban hahaha

LET THEM RACE!!! F1 is becoming too soft. Can't move twice when defending, and this and that and those. This isn't Ballet, Billiard, bowling. Watching Go Kart races are way more interesting in terms of what the drivers can do. More rules, more limited of what a driver can do. As long as they dont purposely crash into another driver, it should be find.
