How Red Bull's F1 weakness was exposed in Monaco GP

  • Red Bull’s second defeat in three Formula 1 races was by far its worst performance of the season. It was comprehensively outgunned, with Max Verstappen managing only sixth place in the Monaco Grand Prix as Charles Leclerc claimed an emotional home victory for Ferrari.
So was this limp Red Bull performance, compounded by Sergio Perez’s big accident on the first lap, merely a one-off caused by the unique demands of the Monte Carlo circuit, or is there more to it than that?

Monaco may be a historic, prestigious and demanding circuit, but it's becoming ever more clear that it's no longer a good race track for modern F1 cars. IMO Monaco showed two things I think should be changed. Tire changes under red flag shouldn’t count as changing compounds.

@@Hydraav2 I get where you're coming from, but are they struggling? Or is it more that the other teams -- after 2 full seasons -- are finally beginning to catch up?
Bear in mind that the only race it can be said that he flat out lost was Miami, and that took a MAJOR bit of luck with the safety car's timing. And even then Lando had to drive his ass off to keep Max behind.
If Monaco allowed overtaking like a normal track, no way in Hades he stays in P6.
Unless and until I see a SUSTAINED drop in performance from him or the car, we can only go by his track record of being THE most consistent driver.
RB would've won the constructor's last year even without Checo's points, and Max had more than double the points of P2 in the driver's championship. The rest of the field still very much has an uphill battle in trying to knock Max from the top step.
EDIT: To be fair, the only struggles I recall seeing were the exploding brakes, and the too-stiff suspension at Monaco. Everything else can be chalked up to gains made by other teams rather than an RB decline.

6:10 - RBR says Max had performance loosing floor damage post-collision, Max says he did not and the timesheet says his lap-time was as fast either side of hitting the bollard. Max himself complained he couldn’t drive the RBR20 as fast as he needed to at Miami from the start of the race, which is why he slid wide and hit the bollard in the chicane. This is the same problem, a tight corner riding kerbs - low grip, low speed.

Red Bull's weakness was not exposed in the Monaco GP. The Monaco GP's weaknesses were exposed in the Monaco GP.
This race is a parade run at 150 mph and needs to change.

Wait! I thought it was Max's supreme talent that was carrying Redbull and not the car.
Max could have just carried that Redbull on his head, sprint around Monaco, and win easily.

A tad off-subject, but I think every driver should be eligible for the point for fastest lap. It would make the back half of the grid a little more interesting if they could score more than 0, 1, or 2 points after one-third of the season.

No one should score points if the car in front of them laps them. No racing took place on Sunday
