    Had my p38 diesel for 7 years now, had some electrical issues a while ago but hopefully sorted now, put it on coils as fed up with fixing air suspension problems, ride not as good but more reliable. On a recent 200 mile motorway trip it returned 32 mpg, you have to keep it serviced regularly, I hope to keep it for a few more years yet as it’s been a good old workhorse.

    I own a 2000 4.6HSE for touring with my wife and a 1990 Range Rover classic 3.9 V8 auto for off road work. I found the 4.6 is about the same fuel consumption-wise as the 3.9 with 265/75r16 tyres. I don’t drive them as daily drivers so when I do drive them, it is a pleasure. The talk of fuel consumption in this review as with many other reviews seems to be making comparisons to small engine daily drivers. The fuel consumption of the P38 compared to many other similar sized vehicles with similarly sized engines is likely to be fairly consistent. The P38 is not difficult to work on and though some workshops might tend to shy away from them, I suspect it is because they are not familiar with them and don’t have the correct diagnostic equipment. They are complex. The P38 is much better built than any of the RR classics. Sure, the P38 might not be for everyone but if you are handy with tools and have a good mechanical knowledge, you can still get many years of motoring pleasure from a P38 as they are very comfortable vehicles and very capable off road in the right hands. They can perhaps provide some workshop maintenance to challenge you if you are that way inclined. They is an abundance of information on forums and online workshop manuals should you ever be stumped with a problem. There is a very enthusiastic global Range Rover community. As the saying goes: “ Land Rover: making great mechanics since 1948”. But don’t let that stop you! The love-hate relationship is yours to behold.

      @@VintageMovieChannel its almost unanimously said that by removing the EAS from a P38 you ruin it completely. When its looked after and serviced as it should be the system is reliable, never had an issue with mine.

      Дмитрий Коробов Okay that’s crazy, no way in hell this is more reliable. Still id take the Rover.

    • @user-bx3kf4mg6p
      @user-bx3kf4mg6p 6 лет назад +2

      Of course it's more reliable:
      1) U.S. made simple and reliable engine
      2) Strong and full of metal suspension + very simple EAS (No EAS on corolla, of course - only stupid hard-to-repair springs)
      3) Strong frame (Only weak body on corolla) and a lot of alluminium parts in body
      4) +\- Same automatic transmissions.
      And I have Range Rover P38 as one of my cars - and I don't know more user-friendly car. (May be american cars, but I never tried them)

    My father had a 2000 Range Rover that he bought in 2002. The thing was such a nightmare to repair and some mechanics did not even want to touch it. Left us stranded so many times. Absolute junk. He just sold it last year.

      Anton G the diesel is alot less thirsty in town driving but no way 30mpg 2 people at work got 20 tops and 25 on a run at 75 to 80. The petrol does about 20 same speed or 17 on lpg so it would make more sense for long journeys to get a petrol with lpg.

    We have created a Range Rover P38 group on FaceBook, WHAT another one i hear you say? Well we set out to try and do something a little different and that is to do things right.! Gone are the wannabe armchair engineers and the trolls that seem to hinder most groups and in will be an admin team that consist of guys who knwo what they are on about and can navigate their way around RAVE to come up with solutions to problems. Its a very fresh group, and its very early days, but with your help we will get there, and not only are we looking for new members, we are looking for experienced guys to join the admin team and help build the group. We can be found here.... facebook.com/groups/925014894688556/

      @@TD-il6ju I am not a driving instructor. But let the car pull away from stationary with barely any throttle. Feather the throttle when on the straight. Lift off the throttle well before you know you need to stop. Don't waste energy by braking more than necessary, and achieve that by looking well ahead and planning your speed. Never floor the throttle. Keep your speed down, follow a big truck at a safe distance to get a tow. Avoid hills where possible. Let those that want to go faster, go past you.
