Totally agree. The worst thing with the never stopping adds actually make people less interested in the game. I admit that when I first heard of it, I actually played for some time, a nice time killer while in the public transport. But these ads are starting to leave a mad taste in my mouth

Tervel was in fact a Canas ubigi (a title translated by some historians as Knyaz from God or Great C(e)an by others) and Caesar of the Eastern Roman Empire as a title (given to him by Justinian to only the closest relatives of the Emperor because Tervel was the son-in-law of Justinian II, Czar as a title derives from Caesar, so Tervel was the First Bulgarian Czar long before the Russians adopted the title and claim their rulers were the first to have a Byzantine pricess for a bride), not khan (as in the Turkic tribes )!

Fun fact: The practice of nose-slitting which is what Justinian had suffered at the hands of his enemies was a way for them to ensure he would not return to power after being overthrown because the Byzantines believed that only those without bodily flaws (in other words major injuries or deformities) could one become emperor as it was believed as God's vicar on Earth, the Emperor had to remain bodily pure for the spiritual purity necessary for the task of ruling. And so rather than kill their enemies, one of the ways that usurpers to the Byzantine throne dealt with former emperors or pretenders was to mutilate their bodies so that they could never don the purple again. Normally this was done by blinding but cutting off the nose was also common as that was harder to hide. But Justinian didn't take heed to such cultural conventions and being as strong willed as he was made his comeback years later by taking Constantinople with his 15,000 strong Bulgarian army lent to him by Tervel. After retaking his throne Justinian appeared in the Hippodrome wearing a golden prosthetic nose along with Leontios and Tiberios and stood on their necks as a sign of his triumph. He then called for their heads, along with the heads of their followers, and even for the blinding of the Patriarch.

As a history buff, I was surprised to have never heard of him, despite his cool story, but the typical retardation of going to war but not fortifying your camp or adequately scouting showed why I'd never heard of him. Yet another moron of history.
In terms of waging war, there aren't that many things you need to know, logistics and caution being the main points, but so many leaders refused to acknowledge them. It's infuriating.

Because of things like this we have a saying in Bulgaria: 'Byzantine tricks', it means exactly what we see here, someone trying to to use you when it benefits them and then screw you over. Byzantines were very smart politicians!

Well the only reason bulgaria was an opponent for the byzantines, was because the byzantines were engaged on so many fronts. Up untill the collapse of the arab empires in the east, the romans were never able to commit to the bulgarian front. Once the Arab world fractured into smaller states, we see the byzantines quite easily besting and nearly wiping bulgaria off the map.

It was clearly a long fought series of engagements that often both sides couldn’t fully commit to but unlike Bulgaria the Byyzies bordered the Abbasid and Umayyad Caliphates aka the strongest countries on earth at the time.
Well Byzantium wasn't alone though, they had (everchanging) allies in smaller Slavic states, for example Croatia.
Roman Emperors still had authority and could easily use other nations to help them, as we can see in this video.
@blorghised I have read and listened to podcasts about both the battle of Achelous and Pliska. Which if you have too, you will know that the romans actually won the campaign preceeding pliska, quite handily, and only lost because they did not observe their own standards of warfare and fell into a trap. Winning a battle is one thing, winning a campaign is quite another. One could at best call the battle pliska a pyrhic victory, at worst a stalemate.
Listen I'm not saying that the bulgarians werent formidable warriors, or that their existence for so long neighbouring the greatest superpower of europe at the time, is not impressive. I'm simply stating the fact that whenever the romans werent engaged in multiple fronts, they quite easily beat the bulgarians. Which is only to be expected, the bulgars did not have access to the same advanced institutions that the romans had been building for centuries. The bulgarian state, up until the end, was based on tribal loyalties, and were made up of a patchwork of different ethnicities captured in rival nations.
The bulgarian kings and later tzars were quite aware of this fact, and even after inflicting great losses on the romans, settled for peace or gold in peace talks afterwards. Their conversion to orthodoxy was not forced by the romans, but done so because the tzars realised that the only way to lasting peace with the romans, was to become an ally.

He was famous for introducing iconoclasm and while we think it's a bad idea today it actually helped consolidate his political control. His defense of Constantinople was extremely improbable and without his leadership they would have surely lost. Imagine Muslim control of Constantinople in 717!

im not an expert tho but i always thought that everything between the fall of West Roman Empire and the end of Viking Age is called "Dark Age", and only after the Viking Age ended, i.e. mid 11th century, when King of Norway, Harald Hardrade(a dude that served in the Eastern Roman Varangian Guard, btw), failed to press his claim over Kingdom of England, the Medieval period began.
@@sonyablade3001 I'm fairly confident that the phrase dark ages has gone out of fashion recently due to the fact it only takes into account Western Europe, for example China and the Islamic world are flourishing during this time period so dark ages is fairly innacurate. (Again though also not an expert)
@@sonyablade3001 It's simply not true. When Constantinople was city of 500 000, London was a village. Eastern romans and islamic emirates/khalifates were far superior than western powers at the time. Honestly, the first signifacant western kingdom was the one of Charlemagne, which divided into three states not long after his death. It's sad how neglected some empires are - Eastern roman empire, Abbasid khalifate and many more. "Dark ages" are not really dark. Honestly, in VII-VIII century, Abbasids are so far ahead than western states that it's like you are comparing now USA with Rwanda or something.
Im pretty confident about how prosperous were eastern realms during this period and that "Dark Age" is eurocentric term, but aren't we talking about Europe? :)

Anchialos on the Black Sea is a Greek commercial settlement with the right to trade with the local Thracians. I guess the merchants there came from a Greek city of the same name - a very common practice (see New Carthage, New York, etc.).

It is a wonder how the Byzantines managed to survive for so long, when very engagement you hear of is either an absurd defeat or a colossal self inflicted failure.

Chersonesus, the city in the Crimean peninsula where Justinian was exiled after being overthrown, was sacked by the Mongols in 1299. Abandoned about 100 years later, it’s now a preserved archeological site within a suburb of modern day Sevastopol.

As pointed out -- correctly -- in one of the notes in the closing, Tervel the first non-Roman ever to be given the highly prestigious title "CAESAR". This title was second only to "BASILEUS", which was of course reserved only for the Christian emperors. To the Bulgars and Slavs the word was foreign; they pronounced it "khessar", placing the emphasis on the second syllable (khe-SSAR). It didn't take long after that for the first syllable to be dropped altogether, resulting in the word "TSAR" (Cyrillic: ЦАР), meaning "King". Today the word is usually transcribed either as "Tsar" or as "Tzar". However, my point is that Tervel was the first Tzar ever, the original -- long before the title was adopted by the Russian state.

What about Gettysburg? Or Yorktown? Or the fall of Washington in the war of 1812? The last 2 centuries have plenty of cool (if bloody) battles that would be fascinating to dissect, and likely have ample primary sources available. The US civil war alone could fill several months. :-)

Just a quick note Phanagoria was the capital of Old Great Bulgaria. Which collapsed under the pressure from Khazars and 4 of 5 Kubrat's (the ruler and byzantine ally) sons leave the country, everyone with Bulgarians under his command and they found Danube Bulgaria - Asparuh, Volga Bulgaria - Kotrag, Kuber with his men settled in present north Macedonia, Alcek went in Italy and the biggest brother Bat Baqn (literally big brother Baqn/Boqn) remains in Phanagoria and covered their retreat and latter became Khazars vassal. Long time Old Great Bulgaria was an ally to the byzantine empire due to the friendship between the Bulgarian ruler and Byzantine emperor (Flavius Heraclius Augustus also Kwon as Heraclius I)which gave him the title of patrician. Both countries were beneficial as Bulgarians were guarding the north so Romans can focus their efforts on other areas. Some sources claim that Bulgarians come in imperial lands which were given to them because they were considered trusted ally's but the next emperors probably regret that decisions and the clash were inevitable.

Kyber Cat I think you forget what games are intended to be in the first place. They’re merely our escape from the mundane and bad parts of our everyday life, not as an obsession. To insult casual players and mobile game players for just finding a nice distraction from everyday life is not only rude, but also clearly betraying the principles of which the gaming industry was built on, from the pioneers of video games decades ago until the present day.

Simple Person Bolghars, Avars, Khazars(basically every group with ars lol) were non Slavic. Though the Bolghars would eventually mix with the dominant local Slavs to create Bulgarians
