I had a friend with schizophrenia. She tried everything to help ease her symptoms. She tried every medication possible, she spent a lot of time in a psych ward. Nothing helped. She was suffering so much. She ended up taking her own life. She just couldn't live like that anymore. I can't imagine how scary Schizophrenia would be. Where you can't trust your own mind. Hearing & seeing things that aren't there. Voices telling you awful things. Her voices broke her down by saying such terrible things. The voices told her to hurt herself and others a lot. She was the sweetest person & she didn't deserve to suffer like that. Rest in peace Harmony 💛❤💜
Try taking muahrooms when I did I heard voices tell me positive things every time.

This just breaks my heart into pieces, for her, you, and all of her friends and family. I am sorry for your loss❤
People have a misconception that ppl living with schizophrenia are violent to other's, when it is the opposite. There is a high rate of suicide, self harm, and self-mutilation. They are so quick to be labeled "crazy" but they are not, they are suffering from a mental illness. This label only compounds to their illness by being treated awful or being dismissed. Most are homeless or end up in shelters. I hope we can end this stigma, have more resources and more research done on schizophrenia.
As a mother with a son with schizophrenia this young man showed so many red flags for serious mental illness. I can confirm that at first we didn't know quite what was up. We did know something was wrong but really couldn't put a finger on it. He had so many symptoms this kid had. You just have to live with them for a short period before your spidey senses go off. We tried to take our son to hospital and eventually had to get law enforcement involved. This kid was let down by his parents in the worst way. Now people are dead and he has to live with that
A huge problem is that hospitals wont help unless the person espouses that they want or plan to hurt themselves or others. By that point, it's too late.
Even when it does come to that and someone is hospitalized, they are filled with drugs and released ~72 hours later. It's a serious shortcoming.
@@3_up_moon I agree with you in this regard. I'm in nova Scotia and the first time he was brought to hospital he was let out 4 days later with no meds. I had to make the very difficult decision to send him to a homeless shelter. Once there they seen for themselves however they got him an apartment. Once he trashed it and we called police and emt. Then was diagnosed. He does not believe he is sick...its really hell to be honest. I worry about him constantly. He is not well . There is nothing we can do.
Yeah me having schizoaffective disorder affected by the devil is scary. I unfortunately relate to Austin. I've felt super human like but in a satanic way, I've felt super closer to God after obsessions of the devil. I felt like a special child of God, but now I in mania feel like the devil himself or receive abilities from the devil to basically harm myself and have fun doing it. I walk around with knives with the devil on my mind and inside me. My mania has turned mad. I used to feel angelic and God like. Now it's turned dark. I've encountered police 8 times in my life because of a satanic crisis. I want to share my life story before I die. I want a better ending feel good story, not crime story like this. I don't want people to automatically think crime is the end result for those like me. I always wanted God to be proud of me. So I'll do good, not evil
@@JDBlueprint yes my so had delusions of grandeur. He was on top of the world and felt like god. It's so scary and strange to see someone act like this. It seems like you realize that this is not "normal" behavior. The sad part is that my son does not . I hope you are doing better .
@@mwall8687 I just say it's not ok behavior. I don't know what's normal. I just know that my mental illness and spiritual battles are hard as F to deal with. For me and my symptoms of my mental illness, it's not ok for me to not be ok. That's all I can really put to that

This is the saddest case I've ever seen. There's a video of him after the fact during am interview where he breaks down bawling and saying how sorry he is and how it all seems like a nightmare. There's also some audio footage of him talking on the phone with his dad, asking him if he has gotten him a therapist yet and his dad says he hasn't even tried to get him any help. There's actual fear in his voice when he's talking to his dad, like he's scared of his own brain. It's so awfully sad. I hope the justice system is fair to him when he goes to trial.

@@ririimari Yes, all the dad said was "That's the plan. Did you talk to your mother, yet?" Changed the subject real quick. Thanks dad! ☹
If we heard the same conversation (I heard it from That Chapter show) the phone call was made AFTER the murders from jail. Was heartbreaking that the Dad still didn't take it seriously. Denial can be so dangerous!
they can't...he murder someone. he may be sick but he is a danger to society
I agree. This is one case where I feel just as much empathy and sadness for the perpetrator* as I do for the victims. 😔😢

Schizophrenia has got to be one of the scariest things a person could live with. A good friend from high school lives with schizoaffective disorder. He thought i was actually a different person, thought that a horrible girl stole my face and was masquerading as me, for years. I didn't understand when it was happening, he isolated himself so we all only saw him in passing for the first few years of him being sick. People speculated that he was acting that way because of constant drug use, and people here weren't kind to him. This was in a time before the opioid epidemic, when a lot of people were far less educated on the nature of substance use disorders, and a lot of people thought he was actively choosing to use drugs and put himself in a state where he'd be like this. I didn't think that, but i did wonder if he never liked me in the first place. Once i knew what his reason was for being so cold / mean to me, i felt like the worst person ever for being so ignorant to what was really going on.
My heart hurts for Austin, and the family of the people he hurt when he lost touch with reality, and the neighbor who survived with trauma and severe injuries. The truth is, most people like Austin are way more likely to hurt themselves than others. This is a horrible tragedy 😞
You're right. I'm like Austin and I hurt myself a lot. I hurt myself for the devil in mania and I hurt myself to get rid of the devil in schizophrenia. I also have schizoaffective disorder

"_ Well, I agree it's sad and all, I'd guess most of us who live with an untreated or treatment resistant family member with psychosis and delusions live in absolute horror when our Austins are around. My family member doesn't live here now (she's cared for by Dad who has more money than sense, and our brother who protects her so much, I wonder if he doesn't have a little something extra going on mentally, only he has a regular job and is highly respected for his age).
Again, I agree they have a definite chance to harm themselves (and just having a psychotic break can supposedly cause brain damage, so that's like self-harm IF they're aware they're delusional), but their threat to innocents should never be downplayed. I'm BOOKING IT trying to get schizo sister some help if she comes back to the area, and remain in contact with safety whoevers (CSB?) regularly... they found out the hard way that she is dangerous to the community as well as to herself. Like the Austin guy in this video, things seem "pretty off but no danger" one moment, and the next, dog spirits could have them eating people's faces off to death. I didn't expect to watch this video tonight (hadn't heard the name of this guy, Austin), but how many of us fear Dr. Grande might be talking about her (and her dad and brother!) in a similar video next week! (Again, not embarrassed by schizo sis: psychosis/delusions are a reality that everyone should know the basic signs of, just to be humane).
I really think the "rarely harm others" thing is for people with psychotic disorders who are TREATED and stay in therapy. I pray our family members get to the "treated and functional" stage one day, but Western medicine is a JOKE. (Looking at ER people and first responders!!!)
@@dreamznaspiratons7064 only lithium. Other than that I still face darkness. Lithium controls my mania and hypomania. My psychosis is difficult to treat. I believe that Satan is in control of my psychosis. I'm reading the bible for support and how to deal with illness if no pill will help with my satanic psychosis.

I am a retired RN. I worked with schizophrenic patients in 1990 to 1995. They were wonderful, intelligent people who suffered terrible symptoms.
The demons simply do not exist. Remind yourself that you are a wonderful, beautiful child of God who is sick be because of a chemical imbalance. NOTHING ELSE!!!
And that's the absolute TRUTH.

It's tragic all around. Two people died horrifically, and a young life is ruined. There are similarities to Vince Li (the Greyhound Bus murderer), but Austin was too young to see this coming, and his parents failed him. They were affluent, they could've gotten him help.
As a Canadian, Vince Li certainly hits close to home.😞
Totally the parents fault. On the prison call, “Did you get me a therapist?” “Trying to. Did you talk to your Mama.” He killed two people you would think they’d be all over that.

If dental hygienist starting ritualistically washing his instruments and talking about being like Jesus I would be up and out of the chair (and the building) within 30 seconds.
Hasn't Jesus been referred to as the great physician? But yeah, I would agree that sort of behavior probably wouldn't be very good for business, especially in a setting where people are already kind of anxious.

Just as he’d shown no reaction to being tased, Austin appeared to feel no pain each of the three times a police dog clamped onto his arm & pulled it back. He broke the dog’s grip each time by flinging him off with what seemed to be ease, . As the dog would hold on as long as possible, this resulted in its teeth tearing down the arm, shredding its muscles. However, he returned each time to his attack on John’s face, using it to hold his head. When he was finally lying on his back in handcuffs, he screamed to the officers “Kill me! I’m eating humans! Kill me!! “ A horrible, and horribly sad, situation.
So scary. I’ve seen police dogs latch onto someone’s arm and not once (before this) did that ever fail to disable the guy immediately. It’s not a pretty sight. 😳The fact that he could “rip his arm out” three times, is a story in itself.

I can only imagine the psychological demons Austin was battling before he committed the murders. Family and friends saw the signs, but no one took the initiative to help him, maybe because Austin's illness didn't directly affect them. Sending prayers to all the victims. Dealing with demons and the devil isn't fun. In the mind and spiritually. I know this because I deal with the devil. I also have a relationship with God and Jesus. I have been effected by good and evil. I do relate to Austin. That's what scares me. I've felt super human like, closer to God, and really for me, tormented by the devil. I've also been violent. The devil has my brain also. I'm just reaching out to God and Jesus. I'm writing poems/prayers to ease my mind and mend my heart. The devil is very scary. He scares me. Especially when I see him within myself in the mirror.
The closest thing I've ever experienced to psychosis would probably be the half conscious state I was in following my first seizure. I thought the paramedics who showed up were demons there to kill me, so I hit one of them and ploughed over another trying to "escape". Then I snapped back to reality and cooperated with them. I was even immune to pain, since I didn't notice the fact that I had a dislocated shoulder.
Really helped me empathize with people having psychotic episodes. What somebody does in that mental state doesn't reflect their real personality or character.

I at times still believe my mom tries to steal my soul for the devil to keep but I know it's my mental illness because of her proof to me but I still fight with that belief. Everything about me is of the devil. Now I'm reaching out for God. But I understand when you say that you believe they were demons. I get those beliefs too. In psychosis it's even worse which has made me lash out too. I know demons can disguise themselves too
@@JDBlueprint the devil doesn't exist, God ... I don't know. You need to go to a therapist, don't let it go. We all need psychological help from time to time. I heartily wish that you don't leave it to the pass of time.
I just talked online to someone who knew Austin just a few years ago, and who struggles to understand how the guy he knew could do something like this. He used to be a funny and friendly guy, and not at all violent in any way. He had no motive for what he did either, so his friends are certain that his mental break is due to his frequent use of certain drugs and an previously unknown predisposition for mental vulnerabilities of some kind. Sad story for absolutely everyone involved and their loved ones.
The relationship between cannabis and schizophrenia is complex. There is a relationship but it's unclear if cannabis causes schizophrenia in predisposed individuals, or schizophrenics self medicate with cannabis.
@@RsRj-qd2cg only really an issue with not yet fully mature brains. If people could not smoke weed til they're 25, there'd be a lot fewer problems. That's never going to happen of course. I love weed. But I do worry when I see teenagers, especially boys, smoking heavy skunk because chances are, at least one of them will develop a very scary mental health condition.

At a young age we have a powerful system compared to a 30+ if things go wrong anyway. Doesnt change that the fact that this guy was cray cray regardless.

This story breaks my heart. I struggle with a serious mental illness myself, and understand how you can fail to test reality like that. I can't imagine the torment he must be in over what he has done, thank you for sharing his story, and giving raw honest insight into the horrors of mental illness.
@@crochunter35 my latest DSM evaluation stated that I have Schizoaffective Disorder Bi Polar Type. which is a shift from type one Bi Polar with psychotic aspects. Like the vast majority of people with serious mental illness, my delusions and hallucinations do not cause me to harm others or myself. Like Austin the only way this would happen to me is if I completely disassociated and had no memory of it. I also have a case manager and a huge treatment team of mental health professionals to help me and check up on me regularly. So to answer your pseudo-serious question, no I have not eaten anyone that I am aware of, and there is no evidence or behavior to indicate otherwise.

@Smirk1979 Austin's case is VERY rare. His history of drug use and lack of seeing medical help from a professional lead it to get to that point. Don't stress/worry about that. It seems like you're doing what you need to do. Don't give up, pal.
@@crochunter35 Austin Harrouff was diagnosed with clinical lycanthropy- by an extremely credible doctor. Incredibly rare. Even if he hadn't been, his experience with mental illness has nothing to do with anyone else's experience mental illness. Your repetitive trolling really isn't funny. At least think of something clever.
I was so glad to hear you say that you believed Austin was truly experiencing a mental health issue, and that he wasn't simply attempting to con his way out of being held accountable for an incredibly brutal double murder. I say that because it seems his parents really failed him by not taking his concerns and fears seriously, and I was almost afraid that the professionals assigned to evaluate him might see him in the same light... just a con artist. I've watched several pieces involving Austin, and it broke my heart to hear the fear and desperation in his voice as he seemed to beg for help. I'm so relieved to hear you acknowledge that what he has shared about his mental health struggles are true. I really wonder if a jury will be open minded enough to believe him, too. Just the fact that he continued his frenzy while being tased, kicked hard in the face/head multiple times and his arm being shredded from a dog's grip, clearly shows he was insane imo.

I always feel so badly for folks who suffer from mental illness…I mean really, you break a leg your friends and family rush you to the hospital for care…but let your head ‘break’ and they either wring their hands in worry or hide their loved one in a back room. Why-in such an advanced society-do we continue to turn away in one way or the other? So very sad…

They only found THC in his system--according to the Wikipedia page I just read. What's sad is that this Austin guy didn't feel he could get help for him self, tho it seems he wanted it, and no one else "Baker Acted" him, which they could've done.

I think it's the heat and the humidity that exacerbates people's mental issues. Well, that and Meth, but Meth is everywhere.
I OF COURSE am most heartbroken for the people who were killed and their family and friends. But in this case I feel extremely sad for Austin and his family as well. His mom called the police to report his erratic behavior but it was unfortunately the day the murders took place. It seems they all knew something was wrong but for whatever reason did not know what to do about it.
Unless they as an adult agree to see a doctor for assessment during the "things arent right", and they haven't hurt anyone or threatened anyone police can't intervene, so everyone wrings their hands. It is a very frustrating time.
Maybe taking Austin to a gun show when he was saying he felt paranoid was not the best day trip.
@@joywebster2678Very good point. Adults can't be forced to get help and it's unclear whether any of Austin's family or friends tried to get him to seek help. While I obviously have no idea, it does seem unusual that calling the police would be the first thing his mom ever did to try to address his mental state.
Adults can be admitted for acute mental health treatment without their consent. In florida there is a different name for it I am forgetting, but in California it's called a 5150 involuntary hold. It was absolutely a failing on the parent's part, imo. He was clearly not well and asking for help. A 19 year old who has a psychotic break was also a mentally ill 17 year old, when it was his parent's job to be aware and take care of him. I think it was one of those cases of parental denial and pride/avoiding stigma or embarrassment, rather than actually caring for the wellbeing of Austin. "Not my kid" mentality.
I don't feel sorry at all for his parents. They had PLENTIFUL opportunities to get help for him and didn't.
I had some hardcore psychosis once. I definitely wasn't able to control or hide it no matter how hard I tried. I was nuts, but I sure as hell didn't do anything like that.
Edit: Actually I went to the hospital and commited myself during the first days of my psychosis. I'd be dead or worse had I not done that.

@@DFTBAandDS It has taken years to get better. Tons of proffesional help and medication has gotten me mostly sane. I would be dead if I hadn't gone to a mental hospital within the first week of psychosis. I got lucky and my mom found a really good doctor who managed to bring me out of it with meds over a long period of time.
@@PipHollingworth lol, I'm not sure watching this channel while having zero contact with reality would help. I would've thought Dr. Grande was talking about me or something. I might have even thought he was out to get me. The solution is heavy medication.

I really wish his family would have gotten him some help. There are other videos where his parents say that he as telling them bizarre things and acting strangely. By the time his mother FINALLY called the police to express her concern, it was too late.

Wasn't he over 18? Most colleges have mental health services and also offer referrals. It's quite appropriate for someone troubled by their symptoms to seek help.
Initially, I felt that way, too. TBH, the mom kind of annoys me. Esp. considering her daughter was locking her door at night b/c she was afraid of her brother - like protect your kids much? Mom seems out to lunch, dad was a bit involved, taking him to the park, trying to get his mind off of things. Dad even called his best friend Alex to see what was going on. He was doing some investigation, at least.
You can't force grandiose adults to get help. If he was grandiose but not a danger to himself or others you cannot force him to get help
It seems like his symptoms came on pretty quick. He was a normal quiet guy most of his life. I don't want to blame the parents.

If there’s ever a qualification for the insanity defense, this young man applies for it. A tragic situation all around. I think living his entire life with the fact that he murdered two innocent people and time in a mental facility is punishment enough for him, at most manslaughter. I can’t even imagine what was going through Austin’s mind during his psychotic break but it sounds terrifying. If his family and friends had acted on the obvious red flags and offered him some help I believe this would’ve never happened.

I'm not a lawyer or anything but I work within the Justice system & I gotta 100% disagree with you. He was mentally ill for sure but legal insanity is described simply as not being able to foresee consequences of your actions (mens rhea) & to a much lesser degree could you tell right from wrong at the time of the incident. The fact is that he was around people all day and although he was acting abnormally, he wasn't hallucinating or hearing voices and he didn't react violently even when his friends we're getting on his case or when he pushed his dad at the restaurant. He knew enough to not do worse. It is so unbelievably unlikely that he was struggling but coherent then out of nowhere he has a break but upon waking up in hospital said break was over. That means the only time he was having a psychotic break was moments before he murdered two people ..... I really can't see that flying and it shouldn't. I believe he should get mitigation at sentencing and perhaps be able if you get parole one day but being around 98% of insanity defenses are unsuccessful, I definitely don't see this one holding up and it leading to him being found not guilty by mental disease or defect. There is a big misunderstanding of what legally insane is because you can be crazy as a lark but still not legally insane. Also, it is now being said that a witness came forward saying he was looking for mushrooms & his mother thinks that's what he did and I realize the tox screen was negative but the active substance in mushrooms metabolizes and is out of your body extremely quickly so who knows, with a max of 5 hours for it to be detected it's very possible that or some other designer drug or plant that they don't typically test for was at least partly behind the reason he was acting the way he was.

@@cottontails9003 not all fig trees, aka ficus trees, produce figs. I had an 8-ft. tall small-leaf ficus tree that my now-late husband got me as a gift. There is another one with very large, deep green leaves (they remind me of sassafras leaves in shape) that I've always wanted but never got around to buying one. The ones that produce figs are beautiful trees, too. As long as they have ample sunlight, they can be grown indoors.

Dr Todd Grande and Hey It's Mike are two different peas in the pod.
The information surrounding his behavior in the weeks and days leading up to the murders suggests a legit psychotic break. He also drank a corrosive liquid that did a lot of internal damage and tried to get the police to kill him. Based on the most recent pictures of him showing extensive weight gain, suggests he’s highly medicated. I’d hope he can spend his time in a treatment facility rather than prison. But he can’t ever be released and trusted to maintain treatment on his own. And with the horrific act he performed while untreated, he’d never be safe to society.
I think living with the reality of what he did, will be the worst punishment for him, but I doubt for the victims loved ones and friends this will ever be enough, and who could blame them.

@@UroboricNate yes it’s so fucking terrible, and murder is NEVER justified, but this type of case is literally what the insanity defense is for. He had no clue what he was doing, mental illness is terrifying. He shows genuine remorse, like profusely apologizing and sobbing.

this is such a sad story, I think it was That Chapter who just covered this case and included video of him on the phone practically begging his dad to help get him a therapist. I think his family really tried to ignore what was going on, at least his parents.
This comment is so weird I probably saw this comment the most about that chapter covering it. This case happened in 2016 I learned about it almost 2 years ago. I watched as many documentaries as I could on it and it was Dr Phil who made him cry on the interview SMH basically telling him he's horrible and honestly I don't know why people aren't outraged at that. Especially since we know now that Austin was in fact considered insane during the time of the crimes. But even before that just hearing the story I knew something was wrong. Dr Phil's such a jerk you should watch that whole interview

My feeling is that he is genuine in his symptoms & is a rarity. I wish his family had gotten him help at first onset of psychosis. They're not mental health professionals so one can't expect them to pull all of those complexities together themselves but at some point an evaluation by one should have been brought into the mix *before* he escalated. It's so sad all around.

They were affluent, too. They should have been able to cover the cost of psychiatric assessment and treatment.
His parents and friends all said they noticed changes in his personality, most obvious, was he seemed 'serious' instead of his normal happy self. That, and being more religious. If it was only the 2 weeks preceding the murders, I can see how the parents and friends weren't too alarmed. Perhaps they barely had time to figure out it was serious. Sometimes things like this aren't as easy to spot, as people might think.
Thanks all, I do understand it seems like it was a rather sudden change & that as a parent of course you may think your child was just going through a hard time well before your brain would jump to 'sudden onset psychotic break'. I feel so badly for all impacted by this. :(

I remember when this happened. I live in Florida, about 20 miles from where this happened. It was all over the news and all everyone said the kid was on flakka. Then the same thing happened again in Miami. A guy on flakka, with superhuman strength, was caught eating a homeless mans face! Everyone in South Florida was freaking out!
Yes! I'm in Jupiter and remember it was almost consensus amongst some people that he was on flakka, or that he was a frat boy on steroids.

This case is very sad, and the only murder case where I feel sympathy for the perpetrator, so tragic that 2 people were murdered, may they rest in peace.
I have some sympathy for him too. Because I relate to what he went through before the murders.
I feel way worse for the victims because they felt more pain emotionally and physically. The guy claims to not even remember killing people so he doesn’t even have to deal with bad memories
@@three7446 He does have to deal with self hate, which is extremely painful. I know because I've experienced it myself.
It’s sad that there are so many people who need help, but don’t know how to get it. This could have been prevented. I do think it’s a parents job to know what’s going on in their children’s lives. If you start to see signs that they are suffering from mental illness, it’s your job to get them into therapy and possibly on medication if they are under 18 or living in your house over 18. That was a rule of thumb in my home. Get treatment or leave, after I turned 18. Not to mention I was in therapy years before.
Well, if they're malingering, and get a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity, they go to a highly secure mental hospital. They don't have a definite sentence and can be kept locked up as long as they're thought to be dangerous, so they're not really "getting away with it".

And force fed powerful antisychotics (haldol/haloperidol is still prescribed in Florida) which basically lobotomise you. 10 years of haloperidol would render you almost vegetative so that is surely a worse fate than going to prison

Exactly. A lot of people in the comment section are fear mongering and perpetuating the stigma that people who are mentally ill are violent and cannot recover. Theyre also way too emotionally invested to the point that what they want is revenge and not justice or a better society, they only wish to fulfill their emotional need of seeing someone who caused suffering to suffer.

This is just completely tragic from every angle. My Grandma had a patient similar that in their particular psychosis also led to homicide. That person believed that there were 2 universes, and he was burdened with the task of keeping our universe in balance with the other universe - as in when someone there died, they were suppose to die here too, and if he didn’t even the scale then everyone would die and reality would be destroyed. The guy was fucked up over it for years when he was brought out of his psychosis because not only during his break from reality did he have both a grandiose ideations but from a fucked up burdening perspective but after coming back too had to face the guilt of hurting people and in truth for no real reason other than because he wasn’t right and working through the fact that he wasn’t in control enough to fight his dillusion. So Austin, from a psychological standpoint has to live with the guilt and proof of the validity of his psychosis at the very least would be found in the long standing work that is gonna have to be put in to get through said guilt - as it won’t disappear over night by any means, and may never truely go away.
Living with someone diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder who refuses to take medication and refuses help is devastating and destructive for everyone around.
They feel they don’t need medication because they believe nothing is wrong with them….it’s just a matter of time before they have to be hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation.
Malingering! Eating someone's face could not possibly be the act of a sane person. Just the feel of the flesh in his teeth, should have made him stop, if he was sane. Of course, I have almost zero education in this field, but eating a live person? IDK...

•Reading about the afternoon and early evening right before the murders was spine tingling.
•Seeing his mugshot the first time was disturbing- he looked utterly devoid and so gaunt.

Idk, I guess because I'm a mother of 2 boys... My heart breaks for Austin.
I’m not sure what all you know to date but I’ve researched extensively and including more details if this case than is explained here. I’ve exhausted all additional podcasts, videos etc. I can find and stared off with the upcoming trial details. It’s so sad as we now know that he researched his issues and was asking if it’s normal to not be able to sleep and see things and what his symptoms might be from. He knew he needed help but it seems he’s the only one who tried to figure things out.
He’s set for a 3 week judge trial in October or November of this year.
It sounds as though the one expert witness and the only one of the 3 experts who said he was sane, has walked back several of the things he stated.
The other two experts, I’ve from prosecution and one from defense both agree he suffered a psychosis break and there’s a recording of him talking to dad on phone and it’s heartbreaking.
He’s confused, scared asking when he’s getting a psychiatrist, dad states in a non caring manner we are hoping so, and deflects by saying have you talked to your mamma?
He tells his dad he tried but she didn’t answer and would try later but wanted to know if everything was going to be ok.
His dads a real piece of work. Still nonchalant and seemingly ignoring the depth of what IS reality for his son.
I guess it’s easier to deflect than assume responsibility for ignoring the ongoing warning signs.
Those parents actions that day make me sick I cannot imagine them on a daily basis.
Much of what happened was in the DAY OF, as in one day but the warning signs up until then were beyond normal.
As a mum if my daughter is drinking vegetable oil at my house that he walked to AFTER walking out of the restaurant he was at with dad, gf, sister and friend ummm my response would NEVER be to tell the go get changed sweetie and I’ll drive you back to restaurant.
I mean WTAH WHO would find this a swell solution when they were fully aware of his mental decline?
I’ve watched several podcasts about this so I know more about the actual events of that day and bizarre doesn’t even begin to explain.
The events of that day are totally in line with him going in and out of mini psychosis episodes.
The more podcasts I hear the more I learn about that final day and when I see the videos he posted about body building and strength etc. you can eat his nonsense he’s saying but he can’t.
Even his tone and demeanour is off putting and the nickname he chooses is not something anyone could take serious but he was being serious.
He felt he was part horse part dog abd tried to test his invincibility by walking INTO the traffic that very day AT THE RESTAURANT but his sister was able to grab his shirt and pull him back, she then had to walk on the outside of curb to prevent him from doing it again.
Earlier that day he walked to his friends house asked him in a trance state almost WHEN’S MY BIRTHDAY?
His friend told him and he says ok and walks away but his friend caught up with him suggesting they go to the beach.
He agrees and his sister cones along and met other friends there as well. When they got to the beach Austin says he had to go back home for something and returns with a long sleeve shirt jersey with the NFL logo from Michael Vic’s team on and heavy pants, TWO wrist watches and dark sunglasses and they were like what are yiu wearing that for? He explained something about being part dog and other weird rubbish and then suddenly snapped back to reality.
They met up at the restaurant after the beach when he tried to test his invincibility as he thought he’s now half horse and you can see them all inside restaurant and he gets up and walks out of restaurant but then walks back inside, they thought he went to bathroom then like 10 minutes later just walks out the door which is when he walks to his mum’s house to drink vegetable oil???
When he returned he got into a scuffle with his dad and left again . Is friend walked after him but was about 30 seconds behind him and when he was outside he couldn’t find him.
That’s when the events happened. Just long enough to walk to that area and the victims had their garage converted to a living type area and kept garage door opened to see and talk to people and were well known and liked. Their neighbor was the guy who initially heard the woman’s scream and was a good friend who went to see what was wrong.
He heard growling and grunting and tried to help the women but he took his knife and stabbed him in the neck and back which surprised him as he’s a good strong guy and saw this frail skinny kid so figured he’d be a no problem but he ran away through their garage door to the back inside door them across the street to his house locked the door and called police.
He was lucky to be alive. By time cops came the wife was dead and the husband was already being eaten. His strength was so strong he just stretched his cheek out so far he could eat the inside of it.
The cops were just astonished at first and as already explained he wasn’t fazed at all by any and all attempts to stop him, until the third time the dog attacked his arm and as he was tearing his arm away the male officer timed kicking him in the face just right that he fell over but still attempted to go back to eating him but he had gotten one cuff in his arm and two other officers helped hold him down to get other cuff on him.
There’s a video of the officer playing out the scene that day and you can see clearly how chaotic it was and he re-enacts his attempts to kick him without success.
I’m one podcast I watched it said he was screaming KILL ME IM EATING HUNANS, as he clearly couldn’t stop what was happening.
I’ve watched I think every podcast I could find on this case as I truly found it unbelievable initially, I’m sure I’m not the only one either. I felt no way this is all it seems as nobody could be capable of such powers and not be drug related and/or exaggerated right?
Well WRONG! It is so disturbing knowing the family locked they’re doors at night after he was convinced there were demons after them and literally moved his bed into the garage to protect the family.
He would open their doors to ensure they were safe from the demons, that’s one aspect of Dr. Grande’s mocking if him that upset me when he referenced the dog must’ve been a demon deflector as he obviously did not do his due diligence in researching the fact that it wasn’t a joke, it wasn’t a funny ha ha moment he truly thought demons were trying to kill his family!
They ignored this deranged thinking and just prevented their sleep from being disturbed! Like that’s just the solution!🤬

I think he was working at the front desk doing admin work. He had no dental hygienist training. But his dad owned the office as a dentist -so you can hire family to do tasks or be a ghost employee or both for that matter.

I appreciate your analysis. With the dog comment, in a situation like this, it's so isolating that you are desperate for some solace. I was committed with such thoughts, and my dog was such a support, like I was fading into this world and there was no way out. I felt he understood and just held space for me, and I did feel protected by him. All I knew was just this faint memory with this otherworld upon it, and I didn't want to be apart of it. It's so frightening and there's no escape. I remember psychologists and psychiatrists couldn't give me solace, as all they could say was demons don't exist, and the devil is not real, but that was not enough, they couldn't see or hear what you do. The world was such a dark place then. It's extremely isolating and you feel trapped. I am grateful for psychological intervention, as I am a different person now. My heart goes out to this man, and the victims. Such a terrifying experience.
As someone who had a roomate who manifested similar symptoms to this person , many many years ago ( necessitating police intervention to have them involuntarily committed to a mental health facilty )

I recently met someone who described the symptom of "go, go, go" and that frightened me, but I had not heard that before him. That combined with insomnia and some paranoia, I advised him to get some help and told him I couldn't be around them until they did. After hearing of this case, I'm glad.

Wow, thank you for doing this case, Dr. G! I find this interesting b/c I had a friend in university that had a psychotic break - I believe she was diagnosed bipolar w psychotic break - at age 19 or 20. This was in the dorms. Unfortunately, no one caught on for a while b/c we attended a religious university, and so when she started talking about Jesus all the time, I think people just wrote it off as being super spiritual. It wasn't until she was awake for several days that she was hospitalized. With meds and family support, she has gone on to live a normal life.

My son has had schizophrenia since 2013 and has been in denial up to know.

My son was diagnosed at 19yrs old and will be 30 in 2 weeks,he is an outcast,Family,siblings,friends every one stays away,he lives alone but he does have me.
After all these years of watching my son suffer,being unable to care for his self,being on and off the medications has caused his mind to decline even more,he has a rap sheet pretty long,nothing no where this serious but serious enough to put him in jail severe times.
His rap sheet has cause him many troubles,I am his guardian now and since I've became his guardian I've needed to admit him into long term care severe times but due to his record non of the places will accept him.
Jail has became the new mental asylum.
Jail is the worse place for Schizophrenic patients,they don't get the right care or meds, they become an open door for severe abuse.
These people need help not Jail.

An Individual with true psychosis due to schizophrenia is responsible because it was there body and hands that done the damage but there mind is not there on with this horrific and dehilbrating disease.
My son attacked me during his first break by putting feces in his mouth and grabbing me to put feces in my mouth,I got away and ran into a neighbor house whose door was unlocked,during the attack I looked into his eyes, he was not even there.
When my son is not OK I can tell by his eyes til this day.

This case really freaks me out. With tragedy, it's always best to have simple black and white answers, but this is as gray as it comes. This was a really good assessment, and goes well with the video on Austin Harrouff from That Chapter. Love the work you are doing Dr. Grande!

That’s a very unusual case. Unfortunately the tragedy was on all ends- the victims, the perpetrator and their respective families. Your assessment and your final words on immediate intervention are spot on, if only he could have been seen by a clinician a few days prior...😕

I was a teenager when my brother started showing mental health symptoms. It was such a scary chaotic time. I eventually had to move out of my family home into my older brothers apartment during my senior year. Thankfully he's no longer violent but he's still very paranoid. He lives in my Mom's garage and garden shed. He's able to work day labor jobs now and has bought a car. But still most of his time is spent alone or with his dog. His drug abuse is mostly gone (meth and PCP) now but still smokes marijuana but that seems to keep him calm and help him go to sleep.
Your brother sounds a lot like my brother. He did a lot of meth, LSD and PCP. He had a master's degree in engineering but could not keep a job because he could not get along with people. He is extremely paranoid.
His successful parents used the DENIAL psychology...we aren't seeing the Elephant in this room...and you aren't either.

I agree with all points you make in the video. 💚 The fact that mentally ill persons can experience genuine symptoms while at the same time pretending to have others that they don't actually experience (just like everybody else can do this) always adds some extra complexity to the field of mental health, that professionals in this field have to deal with constantly. My own confusion at this extremely warm weekend however unfolds around the question how our doctor can wear long sleeves and show no signs of sweating at all.... 🙂

Yikes! So I'm not clear on what was up with the cannibalism? Was that addressed in the mental health review? It's scary how sneaky mental health disorders can be! We had a family friend who had a very similar set of experiences and beat his father to death with a table leg. He was declared insane. It was shocking on every level and totally un expected! Sad case all around. Thanks Dr. G 💜
I know of this case and I have 1 question. Why do they try these people later on after they are treated and on medication to control their mental illness? Both the defense and the court appointed psychiatrist agreed he was not legally sane at the time of the crime. So why do they ever try them later on? That seems so wrong. Additionally, I was very saddened by the victim's family not understanding this type of mental break. They just want him punished but mental illness is a punishment already. I know they are furious about the murders but it does not mean that mental illness does not exist in this case and he demonstrated it in a big way. They didn't believe it but the evidence is, in this case, overwhelming. Before anyone asks me if I could be understanding, I could. I know mental illness's realities for various reasons.
