I had been glueing stuff and cable tying repairs for years. Only recently found out about bicarbonate of soda and super glue. Could've saved myself loads of money and headaches over the years if I had found this out sooner.
For more difficult plastics ( polyolefines type ) it is advisable to sandpaper the surroundings, of the crack to let the glue " bite " into the plastic. I also apply a plastics adhesion primer cethanes based. Paint thinner, depending on the type may leave an oily residue. Isopropyl alcohol is an exellent degreaser and on evaporation it will drag away any moisture. Well done in reinforcing the remaining hinge ! Thanks !!!
This trick worked for me to repair the trunk and fuel tank lid lever plastic that was broken right at the stress point and boy oh boy does it hold! Instant gratis folks, it does work!

Did some flat plastic superglue last evening. Without the excellent prep step. I was setting the stage for a layer of fiberglass underneath. Hope it holds enough for the glassing! Great video!!
Great tip SPC! Glad you showed using multiple applications of Super Glue. Too many folks think just a couple of drops are sufficient to make a repair and they try to use the part way too soon. Multiple light applications and some patience does the job, and don't forget the baking soda for added strength! .....Patiently waiting for "thorough Thursday"!!!!
That's also an old guitar repair technique. When the strings buzz because the nut (the part with grooves that space the strings out) is worn, just fill the grooves like this and refile.

I have seen this trick before with the baking soda. I am going to have to ask the chemist what the reason that baking soda works. We use a two part glue system that you pour micro fine plastic beads into the glue and it fuses anything! Thanks for another great video my friend.

On something like that hinge, I would first use something to reinforce the plastic hinge. You could use something like a thin wire mesh and melt it into the plastic on both pieces and then you can use the baking soda and superglue for the final part of the repair. Makes for a much stronger part.
I finally had the opportunity to try this. Someone tried to steal my side marker (it's a nice side marker) and just broke it instead. I tried the superglue and paper on the outside of the bend but that didn't hold. Then I did the baking soda and glue on the inside and that sucker is STRONG. I popped it back in and no one will ever know the difference. Thanks.

Didn't know this would work on a area like that, which has a lot of stress on it. Did know of the trick of using baking soda, and making layers though. Also, some guys swear corn starch is denser and makes it even stronger, ever hear or try that? I originally heard the baking soda reacts a certain way, so only have used that. Have a great weekend too, and the only thing I've heard that I would try, is a guy said he had a block of some fibrous material that came off in strands when peeled w/a knife, and he added that, and that I think I would try, but as I said, have heard the bakingsoda chemically reacts, so think the cornstarch thing is just somebody trying to get noticed on a automotive blog..and it wasn't me who suggested it there I swear! lol.
My side mirror glass nearly fell off the dried up backplate on my drive home. Used loctite waterproof silicone sealant i had lying around to reglue it. So far so good.

Ever do a similar repair to the armrest in a late 90’s ford ranger? The internal plastic on the lid on mine is broke. The hinges & latches are fine. It’s just the flat part where you rest your arm that’s broke and I wonder if something like this would work.

My wife has a very bad case of rheumatoid arthritis and is unable to turn a key in the keyhole. Not sure if this is an easy project that I might be capable of doing. I've seen a few videos where guitar repair guys used baking soda and glue (or sometimes bone dust and glue) to fill in the slots on a guitar nut so they could be re-filed. Nice to know it works on a lot of plastic parts too. Boy, if I had a nickel for every plastic connector I've broken off door panels over the years....
Hi, will this hack work on a car that will get super hot inside (Florida)? I fixed my cracked console area with super glue and it fell apart in the heat. But I only used super glue, not your nifty fix. So will it help keep the repair in a hot vehicle?

A lot of your videos mention to use Laquer Thinner for cleaning and paint prep. I already have some Xylene on hand. Would that be suitable instead or would that cause problems?

I have door panel with the vinyl coming "unglued" or separating from the hard underside of it. There is probably disintegrated foam in there just like what happens to headliners. I was thinking I had to remove it from the backing and getting rid of all the foam and re-gluing it. This is a c5 corvette and it seems to happen to all of them where the armrest horizontal surface goes up to the verticle surface of the panel. I once covered plastic with real leather using plain old rubber cement like it was contact cement. The question is, what is the best possible longest lasting way of regluing it. What glue? I know I will lose the foam in between, but the vinyl is specific to the car and is otherwise not ripped on torn.
andrew domenitz we have used these with great success amzn.to/2MAOOaO when using this you have to cut the vinyl so it will lay back down flat then use this amzn.to/2LYJVac to attach the armrest as I know exactly what you are describing, the only way to repair these other than using the armrest I sent you is to remove the door panel and pull the vinyl up and reglue with this amzn.to/2LYJVac hope this helps

Another cool video but, but, but... why? Why is the combo of baking soda (NaHCO3 - Sodium Bicarbonate) and super glue (ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate) so strong? I have seen this trick used repairing nuts and saddles on guitars.

I once was fixing something with super glue and i though why don't i glue it with a piece of paper (Sometimes with toilet paper with layers) cause the paper gonna absorb the glue and form a strong bond since then ive been using that type of trick (but never though to use soda) that's basically the same idea here
It's the inevitable result of mixing superglue with everything baking related. The flour and yeast didn't work so the baking soda was the last thing he tried ;P
I find melting a piece of steel mesh over broken and cracked plastics with a welding iron PLUS using a good glue makes the breaks impossible to reoccur...almost literally.
Sure can be used for that not sure how well you’ll be able to cover it up dashes are usually just replaced here because they are very hard to make perfect have a great weekend

That is amazing! I also use tissue paper with supper glue, it works like a fibre glass and is hard as rocks.

I just used Velcro it works.

A lot of your videos mention to use Laquer Thinner for cleaning and paint prep. I already have some Xylene on hand. Would that be suitable instead or would that cause problems?
In order for us to guarantee that our work and videos do the job we suggest only what we have found that works so with that being said I would stick with the lacquer thinner my friend have a great night and a great weekend

I have door panel with the vinyl coming "unglued" or separating from the hard underside of it. There is probably disintegrated foam in there just like what happens to headliners. I was thinking I had to remove it from the backing and getting rid of all the foam and re-gluing it. This is a c5 corvette and it seems to happen to all of them where the armrest horizontal surface goes up to the verticle surface of the panel.
I once covered plastic with real leather using plain old rubber cement like it was contact cement.
The question is, what is the best possible longest lasting way of regluing it. What glue? I know I will lose the foam in between, but the vinyl is specific to the car and is otherwise not ripped on torn.
andrew domenitz we have used these with great success amzn.to/2MAOOaO when using this you have to cut the vinyl so it will lay back down flat then use this amzn.to/2LYJVac to attach the armrest as I know exactly what you are describing, the only way to repair these other than using the armrest I sent you is to remove the door panel and pull the vinyl up and reglue with this amzn.to/2LYJVac hope this helps

Another cool video but, but, but... why? Why is the combo of baking soda (NaHCO3 - Sodium Bicarbonate) and super glue (ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate) so strong? I have seen this trick used repairing nuts and saddles on guitars.

I once was fixing something with super glue and i though why don't i glue it with a piece of paper (Sometimes with toilet paper with layers) cause the paper gonna absorb the glue and form a strong bond since then ive been using that type of trick (but never though to use soda) that's basically the same idea here
Drunkedpsycho It is basically in the same room as using paper but far far easier from what we have found anyhow thank you for sharing my friend
It's the inevitable result of mixing superglue with everything baking related. The flour and yeast didn't work so the baking soda was the last thing he tried ;P

I find melting a piece of steel mesh over broken and cracked plastics with a welding iron PLUS using a good glue makes the breaks impossible to reoccur...almost literally.

I purchased this super glue years ago and it came with a little bottle of white powder. I now realize that it's baking soda!
