The Swan Silvertones - Saviour Pass Me Not

- An electrifying version of the hymn Pass Me Not, Oh Gentle Saviour. I think that it was recorded about 1960. The lead singer, West Virginia's Claude Jeter, was surely an influence on Al Green.
This record featured on the movie The Big Easy, which was strange because the rest of the soundtrack was by Louisiana artists. Good choice all the same.
THAT'S MY DADDY THE LATE WAY SPIKES PLAYING THE GUITAR AND SINGING BASS! HE WENT TO HEAVEN 10/17/2008 BORN 07/14/1914

just heard interview with paul simon and he said bridge over troubled water was influenced by your dads group Quite a compliment!!
Wonderful, simply wonderful
@@mjsmcd Was it the Dick Cavett interview? That's what led me here.
Since I was 14 years old in 1955 I have enjoyed the Swan Silvertones (THE BEST) along with The Soul Stirrers, Five Blind Boys, The Harmonizing Four, The Dixie Hummingbirds, and many, many others. I am an North Carolina old white boy who loves to be stirred in my soul. Thanks Jeter and all the old groups, Robert Boggs - Marion, NC
I'm a little boy sitting in my Granddaddy house with the Potbellied stove in St.Matthews South Carolina back in the 60's man what memories
The Big Easy brought me here. Such powerful, deeply resonating music.
I heard this the first time from the Big Easy movie soundtrack. It blew me away then and 30 years later still my favourite gospel song from my favourite gospel group.
Want this played at my funeral even though I no longer a believer.
What a group and what a song
As a young man I listened to this music in Memphis, TN during the 1950s and 1960s. It still has the same dynamic impact now as then. And is the reason I don't care for today's contemporaty commercial gospel quartets.
There are 83 people out there that don't know GOD'S GRACE AND MERCY. PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR LOST BROTHERS!
sounds like a good idea, but I am not there. I pray god wins sooner than later. Not up to me, up to god. I do love your heart though xox
Prince led me to this group. they were one of his last records he brought on record store day. ..thank you Prince r.I.p. 4-21-16
sunflower power you’re everywhere Sunflower 🌻 it’s me ☘️🌹👍✝️🙏🏻
Wish it had been one of his first!
I love this rendition of one of my favorite hymns. If You listen closely, although it sounds a lot like Rev. Jeter, it is actually Louis Johnson on the verse. Then Rev. Jeter comes in on the chorus. The Swans were unique in that they had three great leads who could all sound alike. But when all three would lead on songs such as "Mary, Don't You Weep" and "I Gave My Heart To Jesus", they would just bring down the house. That's what made this group so great. A golden classic.
herschelzboy bless your house 🙏🏻
@@matthewfranklin1827 Amen!

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! Still Listening
The devil came over my house to drink and cuss, as we so often do, and heard this song over the radio and got up and left.
That's all it takes sometimes!
TELL THE TRUTH AND SHAME ALL THE DEVILS!!!!!
Pure Refined voice and messaging! Thank you for posting this treasure.
This is something I have never found a measure to reason with. Puts me in a trance.
The group that helped Paul Simon get out of stuckness writing Bridge over troubled water.
he actually said on national television that he “stole bridge over deep water“ to come up with the title for his greatest song.
I’m glad they didn’t sue him. It’s getting to the point where people can’t hardly do anything without somebody’s relative suing them for it
Simon's song was a drug song! He smirks & snickers that he fooled so many, especially Gospel singers, choirs & quartets.
I never heard it this way.Nice.
This will be sung at my funeral....I have always LOVED this song!!~
I heard this song seeing the 1980s film, "The Big Easy" -- so good.
I Just wanna Thank You Jesus for these wonder songs that we can hear in these times.
What a fine heritage. Thank you Father God, on this 59th anniversary of my humble birth. "It is marvelous in our eyes."-Psalms 118:23
I am here because of Prince. God bless him!
I'm here because of Paul Simon. Glad to be here.
music from my youth some I thought I would never here again thank you you Tube
When I was 10 years old, my parents took me to my first real Gospel concert. It was a match of the Spirit of Memphis Quartet and the Swan Silvertones. Even though that was was more than 65 years ago, I remember it as if it were yesterday. I call it a "match" because groups would compete, and as good as the Spirit of Memphis was, Claude Jeter and The Swan Silvertones turned the church out. I recall when Claude Jeter came into the song with his falsetto on the song, "Send My Child Back Home to Me," and the wife of my cousin sitting in front of me jumped out of her seat and just fainted! She was stiff as a board! From that moment on I was hooked on Gospel. I saw some of the greats like Sam Cook and The Soul Stirrers, The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Swanee Quintet, The Pilgrim Travelers, The Five Blinds Boys of Mississippi and Five Blind Boys of Alabama battling each other, Julius Cheeks and The Sensational Nightingales, and many more. I also saw all the female groups including Albertina Walker and The Caravans when James Cleveland was their pianist; The Davis Sisters, Clara Ward and The Ward Singers, Sally Martin Singers, and Gospel singles including Mahalia Jackson. They all came to Charleston, SC during the fifties. Our kids have a love for classical Gospel and contemporary Gospel, and even got to meet Ira Tucker and the Dixie Hummingbirds when James Walker was still alive.
DAMN I AM SO JEALOUS OF YOU RIGHT NOW ! YOU SAW SAM WITH THE SOUL STIRRERS AW MAN AWMAN!!!!!!YOU ARE SURELY BLESSED.
Carol Lawrence Carol you saw some of the all time greats. In your opinion, between Ira Tucker,Archie Brownlee,JuneCheeks,Louis Johnson and other hard leads that you remember, which one did the most Damage ,tearing the church up?My idol ws Sam Cooke.I wasnt born when he was singing Gospel, but describe his style live.
WoW.. My grandmother told me about all these groups coming down to the Manhattan Theater in St. Petersburg, Fl , Even about James Cleveland playing piano.. And my 1st Concert was Gospel Explosion early 80s.. that's when I fell in love with Gospel Music Especially my All time Favorite Jackson Southernaires.. Granny Said women fainted and cried all the time. But when GROWN MEN Cried!!! You got some singing Spirit filled.. HUEY still get me teared Up today... got to see soo many great myself.. Robert Blair RIP in ATL
Spirit of Memphis
thank you. this is wonderful. i was just talking to somebody who has two words to say to people who say religion never made anything good. 1.) gospel 2.)music. oh yeah.
my grandpa sings in this group
i have to listen to this regularly to get that feeling of pure amazement - no words describe the depth and passion and beauty of this song as sung by the Swan Silvertones - never fails to just kill me with joy
This rare LP was recorded in one day at Vee-Jay Records’ studio in Chicago...back in '62.
Yes. One of those rare perfect days. The group showed prepared. For immortality, though they probably just felt they were prepared to do something good. This song belong on one of those rockets sent into outer space to connect with intelligent life!!!!
Now this is real singing
Thank you Claude Jeter. However don't forget Louis Johnson and his preaching singing style that was a contrast to Claude's falsetto. God bless the Swan Silvertones and that sweet harmony.
Good singing Ol school For Real PLJ
No intro .needed 4 this legendary group!
vocal arrangements are awesome
Go head Swan Silvertones! I Love That Harminzing Sounds Great! 12/20/13.
words, can't express how beautiful this song is, as sung by the Swans
"SAVIOR do not pass me by "
That was powerful. I love it.
I am here bc of Prince! thanks again purple friend!
Me too! God Bless our Prince Rogers Nelson!!
In Buffalo, N.Y. I sang with a gospel group called the Gospel Prayerwheels. We modeled ourselves after the Swan Silvertones and I was the lead singer who was a Claude Jeter clone. Our guiar player and their guitar player practiced together whenever they came through Buffalo. We sang at one of their concerts and did the Swan Silvertones version of Mary Don't You Weep. We also did Savior Pass Me Not in acapella.
Is your group on video any place Shedrick? Would love to hear your group. Thank you for sharing, bless you!
Rev. Claude Jeter was the best Gospel singer I ever heard , His voice range was unsurpassed by no one. Can anyone go beyond falsetto? well he did.
Wow. Just.......*wow* .
This is That Deep Down Home Gospel Reminds Me Of My Great Grand Parents RIP! 7/25/13.
Got here because I just read Prince purchased the Inspirational Gospel Classics by Swan Silvertones CD, with some other music, days prior to his death.
Me too! He knew good music! Really sad to think this is some of the last music he purchased...making me cry now :(
kona1967 same here. 💜
Yes Lord!
This recording is so terrific. I heard it in the 1986 film The Big Easy.
Always come back to it.
I first heard this song in the movie "The Big Easy". It's the kind of music my dad loves.
If you love gospel music, I highly recommend an amazing documentary out right now (In Denver, anyway), called 'Rejoice and Shout'. It's like an audio encyclopedia on the roots of black gospel and its influence on all American music. Loved it!! First I heard of Claude Jeter, but am now a huge fan.
Great recording. I first heard it from the movie, The Big Easy. It is beautiful.
Much respect to the guitarist. It's a fine skill to be playing like that, while not competing with such great singers.
Thank you for posting this. A treat.
absolutely gorgeous, tears in my eyes
Brother Claude Jeter . . . what a voice! There was none like him! H had a gift from God! I could listen to him all day and never tire. A once in a lifetime talent.
Sometimes we have to go into the enemy's camp and take back what he stole from us. The Swan Silvertones are not playing any games especially on this album!! They are about their Father's business.!!
Cotha Patterson Amen brother !!
Thank you for representing Love, brother.
REAL SPIT!!!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
R. H. Harris was using falsetto extensively as quartet lead for the Soul Stirrers on record years before Jeter first recorded. Harris's influence marked the shift from Jubilee (i. e. the Golden Gate Quartet) to the modern gospel quartet sound. Harris was the revolutionary...Jeter was influenced by Harris and carved a niche for his own, more refined style.
Beautiful.
Claude Jeter was mt godfather,i was watching the big easy and this song started playing i jumped and said whats going on here,i called Pop ,i call him pop,so i said Pop they're playing your song on a movie called the big easy, and that slow Alabama voice he sais i know son,i said did you get paid he said yea i got a little something.thats a true story.
I came to RUclips to find this song because I was watching The Big Easy.
larry gray sr brilliant Laurence 👍☘️🌹🎵🎶✝️🙏🏻
My favorite Gospel Quartets: Swan Silvertones, Highway QC's, and the Soul Stirrers. I purchased this song on an album from a store named Goldblatt's, in Chicago, IL. I purchased it many years before it was heard on the Big Easy. I was utterly surprised to hear it while watching the Big Easy movie. I immediately call my mother who was born in New Orleans.
Now This Is That Old Down Home Harmonizing Gospel! Holy Spirit!
I found a n album by The Swan Silver-toned in my daddy's record box at ten years old and it made me see Jesus, clearly.
I grew up back in the days with these guys old quartet singing
I first heard this in the sound track to the movie "The Big Easy" great sound track, but this is one of the best songs on it, and a gift to all those who, like me, would never have otherwise learned of this fantastic group. Man oh man...good stuff!
I second that...awesome!!!
Just a guitar with this group? WOW! They are powerful.
Thank you for posting. Ifirst heard this magnificent hymn in the film The Big Easy and have been a fan of theirs for many years.
Just love Claude Jeter and the Swan Silvertones! Thanks for posting.

Michael Bonner I agree.
Respect to these guys,fantastic acapelo,thanks for the post..enjoyed ..
I was brought here...... Eventually
Is this the greatest arrangement and quartet singing ever put on record, gospel or otherwise?
Give The Larks song Shadrack a listen
It is truly stunning stuff!!
this is the most awesome gospel song EVER!
More beautful work by this group. I would hope young harmony singers will still try to learn these early styles. We should add to musical styles rather than see them replaced, sort of like we do with children. You don't have one to replace another, but add them to a growing family. Keep it alive!
Walt1124 thank you
@DaStr8Truth I remember listening to music like this late at night over a radio station, WLAC I think, out of Nashville, but they would only play a little as an advertisement for the record store that sponsored the show. I am blessed to now find the songs in their entirety here. Thanks poachedeyes for the post.
Awesome
What a beauty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have heard R.H. Harris and the Soul Stirrers and I stand by my premise that Rev. Jeter revolutionized that voice key by exceeding R.H. Harris's range and definition. Sure, R.H. Harris may have used that voice in his singing but Rev. Jeter surpassed everything he ever did the same way Jimi Hendrix did to everyone who ever played a guitar before him, to me that makes him revolutionary in the falsetto. Someone please post a copy of "Singing in my Soul" on here and let's invite other comments.
Rev.JETER is the FATHER of FALSETTO, HE was out b4 RH HARRIS, JETER was WRECKING churches In 1937 West VIRGINIA...he was 94 WHEN HE PASSED IN NYC NURSING HOME.
Beautiful
I remember hearing music like this back in the 50s and 60s over a radio station, WLAC I think, from Nashville late at night. But they would only play small portions of the record in order to entice listeners to buy the records from a store that sponsored the show. Anyway, I am blessed to now find these songs in their entirety. Thanks for posting this poached eyes.
I have thought they are the greatest gospel group of all times

The devil will not take this away from humanity, and it will be here until the last day of these times.
God brought me here.
I had the luck to find this in a mislabeled lp, the record store owner just gave it to me, as he couldn't sell this kind of music.
@blessed1967 -- yeah , and there was also that frequently played commercial for white rose petroleum jelly. I wish there was a radio station like that now.
love it truly devine god presence is all over ther music
one of gospels all times greats #1
AMEN Just Listen
I REMEMBER AS A CHILD I SEEN THEM AND MANY OTHERS IN CHICAGO ON A GOSPEL PROGRAM CALLED JUBILEE SHOWCASE SPONSORED BY AL ABRAMS PONTIAC LONG LONG TIME AGO.
I'm not christian or anything, but I LOVE this song.
@ritelook I wasn't aware that Rev. Claude Jeter passed! Thinks for posting this information!
I remember seeing them along with the Sensational Nightinggales, Dixie Humming birds, the Mighty Clouds of Joy, the Soulstirrers, and many others. But the ones I mentioned are my favorites
Paul Simon said he was listening to these guys when he wrote Bridge Over Troubled Water
Rev, Claude Jeter revolutionized quartet singing by injecting the falsetto into his singing which he mastered and trust me on this, nobody has delivered his range the way he did it. The most glaring example of his falsetto voice is featured in his song with the group entitled "Singing in my Soul". In this song he goes over the top of the falsetto voice and gives us an octave higher. I have never heard such precise voice control that he displayed in that recording. Someone please find and post it
Great is group My God every put breath in
Hey poachedeyes, do you have this whole album to upload? It's one of America's little known treasures.
