A little trick we learned a while ago is when a grocery item is on sale 30% buy 3 months worth because that is generally how long till they put it on sale again.
Once all the kids move out, you'll still need to keep a stock of food. They come home. With their better half, and all your grandchildren. Then you go from just the two of you most of the time, to feeding an instant mob. But I love it. :)
@@LittleMountainRanch isn’t being a grandparent the most incredible blessing?! I became a grandma for the first time this April and I’ve been over the moon watching her grow and change every few weeks I visit and miss her so much in between stays. She’s just over six months old now and I can’t wait for her to call me grandma. Lol! Because anything she requests after that the answer will most certainly be “yes, as long as mommy & daddy say it’s okay.” 🥰
I love it! I run our pantry the same way. I haven’t been to the store in 3-4 weeks now. I only run for perishables.everything else is purchased in bulk during an annual/ semiannual stock up run. One trick that might be helpful for your viewers that helped me hone in on my usages is that I started dating on the bottle when I opened it. Especially condiments and seasonings and cooking oils. I can see clearly this way exactly how long it took us to consume a full jar of avocado oil or peanut butter……. It helps you know that if you typically use a bottle of avocado oil every 3 weeks, you can run the numbers and purchase a year’s supply that is usually quite close to what your actual consumption is. I think it is fabulous that you are encouraging others to get a nice little pantry stash going. Provides a little insurance in uncertain times. We buy health, home, auto insurance I believe it is wise to have food and resource insurance as well. Call it a rainy day fund, and, to be honest, this investment is paying higher gains right now than 401k’s and traditional investments are 😉❤️ plus, I can’t feed my family with my investment portfolio paperwork if the markets tank, or should I say are tanking…… diversify by increasing your pantry investment. Who knows, in 2 years that honey could be as valuable as an ounce of gold.
I grew up in a family of eight. Later on, when my older sibs came with their families we cooked for an army! Now, I only have myself to cook for. It may be a lot of work, but, enjoy these days. Time flies by so fast!
I live in a suburb of Dallas Texas and literally across the street from a grocery store. Growing up in Colorado, my parents kept a large freezer full and lots of canning in the summer so we would be prepared for winter snow storms or whatever life happened. After I was newly married, I didn't think about it much and didn't have a well stocked pantry. One Christmas in Colorado, there was one of the biggest snow storms on record and my husband and I got stuck in our tiny condo for several days. We had a steak and chicken gizzards and rice for Christmas dinner since we planned to go to our parents for Christmas and were unprepared. It was funny and we had enough but since then I keep a larger amount of food around because that grocery store across the street doesn't help a bit if there is a power outage, ice storm, tornado, pandemic, job loss or I get sick and can't go. < All of these things have happened since I've lived in Texas and I'm mostly ready. I'm looking forward to your pantry tour and micro-green set up. I currently grow sprouts in a mason jar but never micro greens. Thanks for sharing!
I just purchased an attachment for my KitchenAid stand mixer that appears to do the same thing as your tomato machine but on a smaller scale and at a fraction of the price. The perfect machine for someone who’s processing much smaller amounts. Mine also grinds meat which I’m going to try in a few days. So glad for both of us!
Back in the 60's & 70's many of our parents shopped this way , on 3-4 kids to shop for , it worked most of the time ! Today in America very large grocery stores even in smaller towns to shop ! My day used to rent a freezer/ locker for 4-5 dollars a month , about the size of a medium suitcase , now days freezers are very available ! Large family seemed to be happy , worked together ! Product available today not always available ! Stay safe , enjoy & best of luck with the family !
Thank you for sharing your information. The more I watch your videos the more curious I become about your family. What a blessing your children must be. They certainly look well behaved.
I DO A BIG STOCK UP TWICE A YEAR - ONE BEFORE SUMMER SO I DO NOT HAVE TO SHOP IN THE HEAT AND ONE BEFORE WINTER SO I AM NOT OUT IN THE EXTREME COLD, RAIN, SNOW
For me, it's so much easier to shop for a month, than to go every week. You usually spend more shopping every week. I have been loving your videos, especially when you're canning and you take us step by step on how to do it. Thank you for that. I hope you and your family have a great weekend 😊😊
Hi Chelsea, I’m interested in how your daughter Claire got the starter, started in her sourdough mix please, and of course how it’s going. Thank you both. 😉❣️
If you’re setting up the grow room for micro greens, check out “Kratky method” (hydroponics without pumps) for growing greens. I am developing a routine to get some fresh greens from our basement this winter using this method. I also took a couple tomato clippings before they were wiped out by frost and stuck them in 5 gallon pails but you could start a seed or two. Imagine fresh cherry tomatoes in 90 days! I’ve grown a head of romaine lettuce in 30 days in a coffee canister last winter. So now it’s about fine tuning so we have a rotation. Also I want to figure out our own nutrients so I’m not having to purchase them. - not that you don’t already have enough to do lol I just wanted to offer an alternative ❤
I don’t have a large family but I keep a lot of bulk food on hand . I only buy what we can use up in a reasonable time so none of it spoils if I see we are not going through it fast enough I find recipes to use it in so I use it up or I freeze it or can it up so it doesn’t go to waste . Food is getting so expensive that ppl will be needing to learn how to be frugal if they haven’t been in the past .. I’ve always been frugal so I’m glad about that ! I’m sure your channel along with other channels that show you how to be frugal will become very popular out of the necessity of ppl needing to learn how to budget their groceries out . The good news is you can still have very tasty meals even when cooking frugally.
How wonderful to discover you on You Tube. You need the design of our kitchen here in Grande Prairie, Alberta. It is amazing and it would work so well for you and your family.
I think second last video when you were talking about that we do need to buy things no matter what, I actually wondered if you had a Costco near by and almost asked! Oh my gosh that warm fresh milk in the mug with cinnamon and brown sugar! I would be getting all my chores done to. Love it. I loved the tomato syrup bloop made me giggle out loud. I love their pure vanilla best value for sure. So enjoyed seeing your haul and that popcorn mix is also a huge hit at our house. I also love the savings on big bulk things like toilet paper and paper towel etc etc makes so much more sense. Have done it for years. And now yes very more important in our present unknowing time. hugs as always.
We’ve started buying our TP from a hotel distributor, not the nicest paper but cheapest we can find. We buy it in 48 roll boxes and keep enough in hand to be able to go a good long while.❤️
we raised our 5 grandchildren and I understand the bulk buying I tried not to buy anything I could make from scratch. it can get expensive buying for a large family I commend you for all that you do, I look forward to watching your videos
Really enjoyed this video thanks Chelsea, I found it very helpful … I also buy a lot of stuff in bulk but I haven’t yet got it down to the fine art that you have, sometimes When I check dates I have to scramble to use it up as it’s about to go out of date, but it all gets used, I waste very little. I grew up this way though , my mum was a child in WW2 in the UK & knew what it was like to go without. As an adult she kept ( and still keeps) a well stocked pantry so I do too. During the lockdown here in the UK I was able to supply all my family with rice, pasta, toilet paper & all the other items that disappeared off the supermarket shelves. Also, with prices as they are at the mo, I heard someone say, if you can afford to do it, why would you not choose to have next years meals at this years ( or this months!) prices? Makes perfect sense to me!
Look up Japanese Milk Bread. It's a super easy technique/recipe that when you add raisins and cinnamon and do the raisin bread swirl roll, tastes better than any store bought raisin bread! I'm sure the kids would really like it for the times when you run out of that store bought raisin bread.
the memory of an Irish woman whose palm coaxed butter lovingly all the way around a fragile shell, hoping to preserve it for as long as she could. That might seem counterintuitive. Why waste butter on the outside of an egg? But clever Irish farmers had hit on buttering eggs as a way to preserve them during winters, when hens produce less. Taking freshly-laid, still-warm eggs, farm families rolled them in their buttery palms. The butter helped solidify the hot, brittle shells, sealing off the yolky contents from the outside air. Buttered eggs take on a shiny gleam. And, as an added bonus, the taste of butter permeates the egg, making it even richer when cracked opened and cooked. Eggs preserved this way keep for up to six months in a cool place and I have had them last even longer . If you keep chickens or know someone local who does , then you can
So great your thinking ahead. I really want to be more conscious of what I buy, spend, organic if I can. Your my inspiration but now its only 3 left in my household so its hard to buy huge quantities except for stuff that is shelf stable. xo
Loved seeing your haul always interesting to see what other people get. It is just my daughter and I and one week of the month my brother I try and grow what I can in Calgary and buy in bulk when I have a little extra money. Being disabled and on aish it is very important and less stressful knowing I can go three months without having to worry if something should happen. The three of us would love to have some land to grow our own food not sure it will happen but watching your chanel and others like yours gives me more hope and insperation. The other day I got two 45 pound cases of peaches for 16 dollars each so I went to your video's to see what to do with them all I made your peach salsa and canned that up so thank you for all your hard work on your videos.

If we want to go to Costco it is 3 hrs round trip not including traffic. Or we can go to the other one witch is 3 hrs one way not including traffic. So I've never been to Costco before.
Hey Chelsea. I’m like you. I don’t like shopping either. Wish I could only go to town twice a year….but we go every two months. I just said to James last time in PG how crazy the traffic is now. I thought maybe I was just bushed but I don’t think so. Thank you for sharing….not sure why we all enjoy grocery hauls so much….but we do. 🤣. Take care 💕🐄
Hi Chelsea when I saw you in the kitchen with your toque on- I could totally relate-but were are your slippers? Love your channel just recently discovered it. Nice to see a fellow Canadian homestead channel.
Teach kids to make raisin bread. Or get a dough kneaded/kitchen center. Soooo worth it. My husband made pie crusts for me cuz I hyped up how well he did it. Altho I taught him - he bought it lol No more pie crust for me YAY My son could knead 6 loaves wholegrain bread. He made alot of it lol Brioche is wonderful for special breads. Rly not that hard.
You are looking so much healthier and happier then you had in some of your previous videos over a year ago. Congratulations on taking care of yourself because the old adage is true if we don’t care for ourselves first we can’t care for others. 🥰🇨🇦❤️

@@LittleMountainRanch oh thank the Lord that they were able to find the problem and help you!! I’m so sorry you had to go through that! I think it’s easy to see it in others when we have health issues ourselves. Im sure all you’ve been through has been an unreal challenge but thank goodness you are on the road to wellness and are taking care, isn’t a rest such an incredible thing and like you say just one hour out of our day can make all the difference in the way the rest of our day progresses. I used to be one that continually tried to push myself until I quite literally ran out of steam and at 57 Yrs young I can say I’ve stopped trying to do it all and be all to all people now it’s about myself and my family and rest is a key component!! I guess that’s one thing that the pandemic showed me. Happy to see your cheerful smiling face and love that you are also a fellow Canadian! Hope you are reaping the benefits of RUclips $$. 🥰❤️🇨🇦
Can’t thank you enough for your links …wow. Considering the prices I have paid for many of those products I thought Christmas came early or I won a lottery! My little mind now is consumed with medicinal remedies I can make for far less then I was. Thank you again!
I'm the oddball who loves shopping for groceries 😂. I actually have done "Instacart", but not really as I just shopped directly for a personal friend. She wanted bulk shopping, but hated going. For me as far as pantry needs, I prefer to stock well first, then as I get low, slowly restock. For example - mayo. We use it a lot for loads of condiments, as well as on sandwiches. So I typically buy 4-6 of the big jars. That used to last us until the next round of sales. (Threeish month sales cycle.) Well, 2020 messed that up. 😂🤦♀️So I kept an eye out for a deal on mayo and got a bunch on super good sale at Aldi. Problem? It was a MUCH smaller container. So we blew thru all the jars. Next time the big containers went on sale I grabbed double the number of jars. That is just an example. I'm also very blessed to live close to multiple club type stores, ethnic grocery stores and within a reasonable distance of Amish communities with their bulk stores.
Do you freeze the tortillas? I only have 3 kiddos (been trying for #4 for over a year and a half) but I love this idea of shopping for most of what we'd need for the whole year. I HATE shopping. Your video just auto played after another video I was watching and I am so tickled that I've stumbled across your RUclips. I plan on watching all your videos. Lol. We live on a military base in the middle of a city. I miss country living and mostly miss my chickens and ability to have a garden.
Good morning! I am loving your channel! I so appreciate the fact that you reply anytime I have posted a question. Thank you! I swear I saw some videos yesterday on the Medicine Preps that you keep on hand on the Ranch? I can’t seem to locate them today. I hope they haven’t been removed :)
What is a butter curry? Is it similar or same as butter chicken? That’s one of our favorites to serve with naan and the other is pizza, as well. Such a good shortcut for lunch time!
We are only 5 adults and have to buy in bulk because certain things are cheaper! 🤗💞🤗 PS Dan is like my husband, snicking things when I am not watching 🤣
@@LittleMountainRanch 😂 that's good! That's what makes hard work fun! Did you go to the Costco in Kelowna? I been there in 1993 ....1994? My cousin lives an hour from there.
Good haul! A very effective way of saving money and ensuring the pantry is stocked. I am surprised they got 6 mini's on the trailer - just weight wise. I assume they are not full...but still, impressive. Good job on the video.
I used to live an hour drive TO the nearest Walmart. Another 20min to an Aldi’s. Opp direction and another 15min to a Mennonite store to get bulk grains n beans. Where I am now, NO bulk food or a Mennonite store anywhere (I called a local fellowship, they think I’m nuts to ask); no Aldi’s in entire state. Or HEB. Or Lidl. Or Winco or Grocery Outlet. Shipping on bulk food is horrific. It’s discouraging.
My family used to do this and the way we sped up comparing prices was to make a spreadsheet with each item in one column and a column for each store, then wed just put in the unit price of each item from every store and at the end go through and highlight the price of the item we wanted so you could go down the store column and mark of each highlighted item store by store. Seems like it would take a long time but it actually sped things up instead of comparing prices and creating individual lists.
Great system. We're not quite there yet. Q: how do you budget for your haul? Do you have a line item exp in your budget for 6 months then do you shop in the 7th month or when you accumulate the$ for the haul?
We use our credit card and pay it off over the next few months. We have a low interest/cash back credit card so we always make a few hundred dollars back with these large shops.
I’ve obviously watched too many US large grocery hauls, because I found it strange not to see giant bags of stuff - 25# oats/sugar/flour etc. Can you buy large sizes like that in Canada? It’s not a “thing” here in my country.
We have trip to Costco tomorrow. We have never went before. We live 1 1/2 hours away. How do u keep your frozen food from thawing? The organic frozen food is a big reason I wanna go.
Hey friends, if you'd like to skip the VLOG and head straight to the Costco haul click here 8:25

I’m so glad you confirmed he was called Albus as that’s what I was sure I was hearing but then getting confused by people in comments writing Elvis 😂
If we want to go to Costco it is 3 hrs round trip not including traffic. Or we can go to the other one witch is 3 hrs one way not including traffic. So I've never been to Costco before.
Always enjoy your videos. Blessings
I thought the same. Seriously being in Costco was intense with all the people.
Hi Chelsea when I saw you in the kitchen with your toque on- I could totally relate-but were are your slippers? Love your channel
just recently discovered it. Nice to see a fellow Canadian homestead channel.
I don’t know how you do it. Just two left at home now and we spend 1600 at Costco last week and another 500 at BJs today.
We grow a ton of our own food. We don’t buy meat, eggs, milk, root veggies or canned food which keeps the grocery bill down a a lot.
I love the beautiful country you get on your trips. I am from flat Sask country.
Teach kids to make raisin bread. Or get a dough kneaded/kitchen center.
Soooo worth it.
My husband made pie crusts for me cuz I hyped up how well he did it. Altho I taught him - he bought it lol No more pie crust for me YAY
My son could knead 6 loaves wholegrain bread. He made alot of it lol
Brioche is wonderful for special breads. Rly not that hard.
Great informative video. Thank you, Chelsea!! Can't wait for the pantry video ❤️
those are good choices for "Sneaks" !!!!
Have you made any videos of “meal making out of the pantry”? If you could direct me to one (them), I’d love to see
You are looking so much healthier and happier then you had in some of your previous videos over a year ago. Congratulations on taking care of yourself because the old adage is true if we don’t care for ourselves first we can’t care for others. 🥰🇨🇦❤️
I feel sooooooo much better since my surgery in January. I had no idea how sick I was!
@@LittleMountainRanch can I ask what u were sick with?
Sure, I had severe fibroids and uterine cysts. My iron levels were at 4 so it was a wonder I could still stand upright. I had a hysterectomy in January which literally changed my life.
@@LittleMountainRanch oh thank the Lord that they were able to find the problem and help you!! I’m so sorry you had to go through that! I pray for you and your beautiful family everyday I know how you take care of so many children and have an enormous heart. I knew you were struggling physically but I had no idea what the issue was. 🥰❤️🇨🇦
I loved seeing you milk the cow!
I like those sweet potato crackers and humus. Can’t wait to see all that food squirreled away for winter. Poor cow. 😟
Great video thanks for sharing:) have a wonderful weekend
Can’t thank you enough for your links …wow. Considering the prices I have paid for many of those products I thought Christmas came early or I won a lottery! My little mind now is consumed with medicinal remedies I can make for far less then I was. Thank you again!
That makes me so happy! Awesome!
Beautiful family
Absolutely loved this! I've always had to buy bulk, but monthly.❤❤🙏🙏xxoo
Hello from Louisiana 😃 new to your channel.
Welcome!!
That is great thinking there. Job well done doing the things. Be Blessed
Great video!
I really liked this video. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
I been looking at organic matters for some bulk grains to get
I'm also want to start doing sprouts we love sprouts
Wow thank you!
Just curious as to what you use so much honey for? Baking? If so I would love to see some recipes. I feel I never go through mine very fast.
Tea, and lots of baking. I use it where you would normally add sugar. I'll talk more about that soon. :)
When you're literally "feeding the 5000" buying in bulk makes much more sense and saves so much money/time.
Sure does!
Love Costco usually have very good prices. Great video!! For some reason I’m not getting notifications when new videos come out.
I only feed 2 people and I too buy in bulk to save money. If I stay out of the stores I don't over spend.
I do! They freeze wonderfully. I'm so glad you found me. 😊
Very interesting! Are you in Canada? If so, are you able to shop in USA? Looking forward to your postings! From Va., USA!
We are, yes.
Great video
Good morning!
I am loving your channel!
I so appreciate the fact that you reply anytime I have posted a question. Thank you!
I swear I saw some videos yesterday on the Medicine Preps that you keep on hand on the Ranch? I can’t seem to locate them today. I hope they haven’t been removed :)
I think I mentioned them in a few videos but haven't done a specific video on them yet. I will try to do one soon.
What is a butter curry? Is it similar or same as butter chicken? That’s one of our favorites to serve with naan and the other is pizza, as well. Such a good shortcut for lunch time!
Yes, sorry, I had meant to say butter chicken.
We are only 5 adults and have to buy in bulk because certain things are cheaper! 🤗💞🤗 PS Dan is like my husband, snicking things when I am not watching 🤣
Dans such a stinker! Makes me laugh all the time.
@@LittleMountainRanch 😂 that's good! That's what makes hard work fun! Did you go to the Costco in Kelowna? I been there in 1993 ....1994? My cousin lives an hour from there.
I bulk shop when I have a lot of money,, only get to sams about 4=5 times a year,, can only get to walmart 1 time a month
Good haul! A very effective way of saving money and ensuring the pantry is stocked. I am surprised they got 6 mini's on the trailer - just weight wise. I assume they are not full...but still, impressive. Good job on the video.
We were too! Pretty full but not all the way.
I am realizing how fortunate I am to have Costco less than 20 minutes away! Did your Costco trip seriously take all day? Drive included?
Including the drive and the grain pickup, yes.
Great idea!
Also join Sam’s groceries, buy in bulk, cheaper,. Just a thought. I shop at Sam’s 2 times a year,
Great system.
@@LittleMountainRanch Another great idea!
Great videos💥
Could you please share your three week menu that you based your shopping from? Big thanks
Sure! I’ll do that in an upcoming video.
Will you be doing a pantry challenge in January? I am going to try my first pantry challenge ever this January! Yikes!😊
I’m not sure - I’m thinking about it.
@@LittleMountainRanch actually you wouldn’t have to since you do go through all your canned and stores anyway! Great job!
I’ve obviously watched too many US large grocery hauls, because I found it strange not to see giant bags of stuff - 25# oats/sugar/flour etc. Can you buy large sizes like that in Canada? It’s not a “thing” here in my country.
We buy all those bulk ingredients in 25-50lb bags. I’ll show you when we do our pantry tour.
I'm ordering corn to make my own corn tortillas I been waiting 3 years to order an I willl put my or in the nexted few weeks
I'm a family of 4, and I bulk preserve and bulk buy...I detest shopping, lol.
Wow and thanks
Have you tried blue azure? Three Rivers Homestead order from there it's a house of 10
We don’t have Azure in Canada, sadly.
We have trip to Costco tomorrow. We have never went before. We live 1 1/2 hours away. How do u keep your frozen food from thawing? The organic frozen food is a big reason I wanna go.
We use insulated freezer bags and they work great!
@@LittleMountainRanch do you have to use ice packs?
Nope!
@@LittleMountainRanch ok thanks
