I remember when I was at Hunter in 92 after coming back from gulf war one and Germany. I was actually living in 1/75 barracks. As an aviation type and made the mistake of going down to the Ranger chow hall one weekend morning, as both the Ranger and aviation brigade took turns on which one would be open on the weekend. All these young privates with white startched dining facility uniforms had Gold stars over there jump wings. I was unshaved and had flip-flops on, which would’ve been fine at the aviation chow hall on a Sunday morning. Not in the Ranger chow hall. Oh no….. I thought about protesting until some first Sgt walked up and volunteered to rearrange my thinking If I didn’t like the way, he ran his chow hall. Went out got my car and went to IHOP. Good times.
@6:12 he's taking about Doc Donovan. Broke my ankle in 94 on Hazard DZ. Doc got me back up and going again so I didn't have to get DXed. Legendary Ranger who did it all! Everyone loved Doc!
Doc Donovan gave me his personal coin once at Kevin Barrys in Savannah at the Grenada reunion. I dont collect coins but I won't lose that one. Served with dad in 1/75, which is where I eventually went too.
Aco 1/75 . Doc fixed me up when I broke my ankle on Hazard DZ in 94. Personally kept me from getting DXed until I could get back 100%. Everyone who knew him had a cool Doc Donovan story. 🇺🇲
My brother said the very thing in 77, they sent him & a couple others out of the 1st Ranger Battalion in Hinesville GA to the DMZ in Korea, where he was met by his last 1sgt they did the very thing to, he told Top he was not interested, went back to the turtle farm accepting a motor pool Sgt position in 2nd D, when he left Korea he was commissioned as an armor officer spending his next 14 years until retirement as a Bradley Unit Commander..

Also I believe it's a Saints name which is very common in Latino/Catholic culture. People are often named based on their Saint's day or at least it was common.

Idk, DMZ duty doesnt sound so bad for a conventional Army infantryman, especially back then. Besides the 173rd, the DMZ sounds like the best place to be stationed (when you get liberty or whatever you Army guys call it) while also having a decent chance to get into something (due to the close proximity with North Korea).
DMZ duty is super boring and very cold. And Infantrymen are stationed so far from the civilian areas so during time off there's nothing to see or do. Nobody in the Infantry wants to be pulling 14 mnths of guard duty at camp casey.
@SoldierDrew I get you, but at the same time, look at the second Korean War. You had Army grunts that got CIBs on the DMZ in the 60's getting called out when they got home for earning them somewhere other than Vietnam. Idk, im on the outside looking in but it seems like at least in peacetime it's not a bad gig compared to being at Polk.
