I was so lucky to be in my teens and twenties during this time.
I'm 69 now and went to national speedway on long island ny almost every weekend and loved ever second.
Never would of thought how lucky I was to have grown up at that time.
I remember in the 70's and earlier, they had match races at various tracks. In '72, I seen grumpy Jenkins and Ronnie Sox race at Pittsburgh raceway. Awesome show they put on
That is pure automotive pornography. Hard to believe that NHRA races were once exciting like that. Real cars that people could actually identify with tearing up the 1/4 mile. Great video, thanks!
You hit the nail right on the head !
Lame today. After Glidden and Warren Johnson, not much is interesting anymore.
Yep yes they are faster now but they all look the same just stickers no wild paint jobs anymore the 70s was the best time for drag racing.
You nailed it. These were still doorslammers, the cars we all dreamed our muscle cars would grow up to be. Why couldn't things just have stayed 1970s?
MOPAR FOREVER !
i was 15 and it was the time of my life it just aint the same anymore
The first car I fell in love with was the 1971 Challenger; lived in North Hollywood CA. just off Lankershim Blvd. and they were filming "The Mod Squad" just down the street from my house, it was a convertible in "Plum Crazy" purple 💜. It had the chrome luggage rack on the trunk lid and Clarence Williams III showed me around the car. It was I believe the second show of the second season, They had blown up the Woody they had in the first season, I got all three of their autographs (Peggy Lipton, Michael Cole and Clarence Williams III) and still have them. I now have a 2009 Challenger R/T Classic in silver with black R/T stripes and most all options.
I was there for many of the Mopar at E-town events, including this one. I was just a spectator for 1988, but I ran my 70 Duster at the 1989 show, and my 72 Demon at the 1991 show. I sure do miss those cars & those days too.
Loved the old days, great racing.
Ohh yes.. this is how cars are suppost to sound like.. it is also THE BEST DRAG RACING EVER!! none of this turbo powered NOS set-ups this is awesome! thanks for posting!
MOPAR OR NO CAR!
I used to watch these guys race back in the 60's and 70's all the time. sure miss those's days.
In 1970 i raced the Sox & Martin car at Englishtown raceway park . A day i will never forget.
It wasn't about who won. it was about the nostalgia of the two old race cars being out on the track together.
The 'cuda and The Hemi's best advertisement
What MAGNIFICENT beasts!!! WOW! This is drag racing at its BEST!!!
nothing beats heads up racing, run what you brung,112 octane and mopar and 75 degre day =FUN,
Thanks! That IS a '71 Challenger though. I filmed that car at many a Mopar event. It's tough to see in the low-res video but if you look at the very, very end, you can see there are no backup lights between the taillights and that it is a '71 tail panel. Other shots I have clearly show the '71 grille and tail panel as well.
Could be a '70 with '71 front and back - that's what Sox & Martin raced in '71 - the 'Cuda was a '70 with the '71 grill. 🚗
You are correct ! I worked at Chrysler Centerline, Mi then and know the Missle's current owner Mark Williamson such great cars of a great era ! #hemidartjoe
It's great to see old videos of Don Carlton. A very accomplished driver in his own right. Sadly taken away from us too soon.
Absolutely love old school!! It doesn't get any better!
Awesome Footage! I love the old match races. Nothing can touch the old Mopars.
Yeeeeeeeessssss!
Ronnie sox...favorite pro stock racer of all time ~]
Why he called the BOSS.....
AMEN ~!
He was called "the boss" because he could shift faster than anyone, or at least anticipate when to shift.
Ronnie Sox could make a 4 spd sing. He was the fastest at gear jammin in the quarter mile that I witnessed.
Sox could dayum shore shift that thing!
Them were definitely the days. Thanks for stopping by and watching!
Ah yes. The good old drag racing. Those days were awesome.
Bullet Bob Reed was the driver of the Missile. He restored the drive train for the owner at the time in Florida.
Love 'em both to death but esp the S&M Cuda, one of the most winning race cars in the history of motorsports!
they said that Ronnie was the best stick man..shifting like no one else...man..i miss these days too..
Sorry That nickname went to Butch Leal. "Mr 4 speed",
Don Carlton!! What a nice guy!!
I would really like to get in Ronnie's 68 there and GIVE IT those 2 cars would have Ben a lot of fun back then... True race cars right there
Thanks for letting me re-live a great memory!
Hey, I'm glad you enjoyed the videos! Thanks for sharing the memories of your old '67 Cuda!
Ronnie Sox RULES...... Period!
Now THAT is what I call I call a drag race between heavyweights. Looks like Ronnie caught him sleeping though.
I think Ronnie pulled a red light. THe last amber is still illuminated.
In 1980 I witnessed ronnie shift gears while wheel standing awesome ! great control.
That would be cool to see, I was alittle younger then but my brother remembers them well
I love classic dragracing
Ronnie Sox aka Mr 4 speed RIP
RIP Ronnie!!!!
couldnt agree more. You should look into Nostalic super stock class. My uncle has a 65 hemi belvedere. Thats what class he runs in.
loved it back then, no four link suspension, no fuel injections, etc, just motor, lol
This brings back memories thanks for uploading this ,I have been to Englishtown many times and saw Sox and Martin run there and Dick Landy , The Fords and Chevys, there was a Gto there that was powered by a 454 that was a terror and a plymouth cuda 340 that was beating the Hemis
340's are known for beating every companies big blocks, 396/396 an accasional 454 and 440 mag. Pontiac tri powers, Ram airs and so on.
I was wrenching and racing back then ( not with the big boys) but they would occasionally come over to give advice, a hand working on something.or just talking if they had time. Not all of course but alot. Im 53, still racing a 9.0 SECOND FLAT 440 6 bbl Road
Runner and when i want to rest it or i dont run it certain weekends my 70 RT/SE 440 CHARGER MAKES AN APPEARANCE. ITS MY SPRING, SUMMER AND FALL CHICAGO CAR.
I DRIVE IT DAILY AND ALOT! I HAVE A COUPLE OLD, 250, 000 MILE MOPARS TO HANDLE THE WINTERS AS WELL
ALL THAT SAID I BELIEVE I SAW 3 340 CARS BEAT A HEMI. 2 TIMES......
THE THINK SPUN SO MUCH DOWN THE TRACK I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO TEAR UP THE TRACK THEY BROKE LOOSE SO QUICK AND FAST THOSE HEMIS.
I've seen Ronnie run the car at Darlington dragway. The good ol days.
Next to Stock And Super Stock it's my favorite eliminator, it at least has some cars, gasser's, altered's, front motor digger's still showing us the way it used to be!
Sure brings back the memories, don't ir?
Damn does this bring back memories....LIONS DRAG STRIP ...OCIR...IRWINDALE.. SOUTHERN CALI STAND UP!!!!!!
if you will note the Sox and Martin car the rear end ONLY goes up when launching. which means the rear tire is going DOWN making more traction.
14 years ago? This video was uploaded 14 years ago and makes its rounds via RUclips's algorithms TODAY??? COOL!!!
I love the Motown Missle 71 Challenger!!
That's really cool to hear stuff like that. Thanks for sharing!
Wow that's as cool as it gets
nobody did it as good as Mopar nobody they wanted to win there will never ever be a time like that again just saying that makes me remember how it was the Chrysler Corporation what a company it was and to all the people who raced there cars and sometimes even trucks
Very well said! Thanks for checking out the video!
Mom's grocery getter! Love it!
Great vid John..keep em coming!!
The "deal" is that OneBad does this for a living, so what your seeing is his income.
Trust me, it's a '71 grille, it's just hard to see in the low-res video. I've got several other shots of the car in the pits that weekend and it is definitely a '71 grille in the car.
>>>solid video!
I always wanted to go to an event like this...never had the chance to...so its nice to scope these videos online
thanks
You missed an Awesome time buddy but atleast you have lots of film to live and re live it
First time I saw a '68 Hemi Barracuda was the 1982 Winston World Finals at OCIR, the DeFrank and Coen car driven by Ron Houser. That car was running high 9's in Super Stock trim...in 1982!! No wonder Ronnie Sox loved the '68 Hemi Barracuda, it was/is a BEAST. Most over the top, in yer face piece of automotive pornography ever created by the folks at Chrysler Corporation..
Yea... It was THAT GOOD!!!
These trailblazers kept the car companies interested in developing more pure horsepower cars that we are seeing now. Hats off to ground bounders. They created the SRT program /Ford Motorsports /Goodwrench
Wow... looks like Sox left on him big time
Yup, the Chrysler Proving Grounds in Chelsea, Michigan is about 45 minutes east of downtown Detroit. It is not open to the public though. They used to have some Mopar events there back in the early to mid-1980's but I think all's they have now is an occasional open house for Chrysler employees.
They would have a grear event for mopars during the HUGE AND AWESOME MOPAR NATIONALS.
YOU COULD DRIVE YOUR MUSCLE AROUND THE PROVING GROUNDS TRACKS.
WHAT A FREAKING THRILL THAT WAS.
Mr Shifter!!!!
I was there was a member of moparformce one of the clubs sponcering the event oh those were the days
listening to Ronnie Sox power shit that hemi car is sweet music to my ears. never got to see him go up against Butch Leal. Anybody out there ever see them run headsup?
sox left on him like it was nap time R I P ronnie
Thanks! I really appreciate the compliment! I have more planned so stay tuned!
I remember seeing them!
I know everybody love the Sox and Martin but Motown missile won that one
Oh I'm very aware of the N S/S class(es). There's nothing better on the drag strips right now, Im a mopar fan, but I love all and everything under say around 72'. Dang super gas is boring, dang bore/stock is boreing, etc, etc, I'm fed up with the pro classes including funny cars that look like a UFO,when Stock and super stock finishes I go to the pits and look at the same and spend my time chating those REAL HEROES of drag racing without them where would the sport be right now.
@OneBadSuperbird you did say versus though. they are sweet though. id like the challenger
I don't mind who wins this race. I am a MOPAR FAN!!!!!
lol sorry, i posted the wrong reply on the wrong video..meant to go to those arguing on that chally/lambo vid..anyways, Sox and Martin rule forever as does the Missile, seeing the S&M car at the nats i was inspired by the scoop enough to put one on my challenger. great stuff
💥 No Better Sound ✅ Then 426 Hemi💥
Really such a shame Don Carlton was taken from us all so early on. Probably the leading light to that point to meet his maker in Pro Stock. Until Lee Shepard's.. death.
Sweet rides
Sox & Martin killed Motown on the lights!
Good questions! It was well publicized that Ronnie was there that weekend but I have no recollection of who was piloting the Missile or who owns it now. Anyone out there have any input?
The sox car got a holeshot...i love my 1970 SE challenger but it had a weight disadvantage..against chevys...im sure that couple hundred pounds was part of the great ride on the highway...put a big block in it an a stock challenger shoots up to 4050 pounds...i eventually gave up on making real road race cars out of them...they were great looking cars an i really liked the size they were.....i miss how good they were on the highway 125 glued in a lane didnt even need to hold the steering wheel...now that auto drive is all a rage...its more fun when ur steering it...very cool glimpse of history....in 70 the big cuda an challenger debut as the funny cars making their first appearence at 240mph....with nitro methane.....the snake ...RIP... ronnie sox RIP too...thanks for sharing...i got my 70 SE to ADCO in jersey just playing i got a .475 light on a 400 tree first time with a boat/truck 318 and a 70 AAR cuda auto trans about had the front wheels up..the previous owner had the tortion bars on the bushing Ronnie would have been impressed....he was a holeshot master i heard....the time would have been decent but a worn distrubutor an point killed it after beating the opponent by 4 cars to the 60 foot mark mid track it fell right on its face...i had it a little tricked out boy was that AAR cuda Auto trans absolutely awsum factory 2500 stall converter was perfect street race converter..with a stock 340 i would have lifted the wheels...thats pretty impressive..for BFG radial street TAs..255 50 15s...
We all need to let NHRA know our feelings to our division directors, maybe that will help, I realize that all the fans out there are not from the era that we like and enjoyed in those glory days, however the sport has gotten totally away from the roots that put it where it's at today.......nuff said
Wow 35-36 seconds was amaisning
Chris Garcia Don did beat sox at a small track in nc and they hired him to drive for them i have a pic of the sox car with Don Carlton over the drivers door.
Thanks! Be sure and check out some of the other videos we have posted here on RUclips.
looks like sox n martin but i agree with the uploader too
Hey, I think he's got a point there!
Not a lot of thinking went into the wheelie bar set-up.....wow
What a holeshot!
man i think i was standing right next to you
Love the video..
COOL
Barracuda....
What about Comp Eliminator??? Gotta love the variety!
00:34 great scene
MISTER RONNIE SOX!!!!
SSSSSUNDAY!!!!! RRRRRACEWAY PARK ENGLISHTOWN NEW JERSEY BE THERE !!!! 👀
Gave me wood.
I've got several other Sox & Martin videos posted. Click on some of the rest of my videos and check em out. Thanks for stopping by!
That they were too fast to compete...
uh obviously I meant to say power shift not shit. sorry bout that.
I totally hear what you're saying...
Bet Don Carlton was driving the Mopar Missile.
its great to see someone argue a brand new $100,000+whatever car versus a cars thats over 30 years old technology wise, yet the new car if faster is really not alot faster. its all apples and oranges anyways, what was being made 30 years ago by the euros that were mass produced with the kinda of HP numbers the muscle has? even today, sports cars like that are so rare anywhere..whats it matter?
You have no clue what kind of HP numbers these cars are pushing, do you?
They'd practically have to neuter the engines in those cars to bring them down to 314 HP.
