this film should have been much bigger than it was in this country brilliant film.

Lets just say a certain class of people wouldn't find it that thrilling in this country or abroad. I'm glad it will stay an obscure gem. Some of the stuff we make contains far more depth and class, then what Hollywood produces.

I never got it there was a lot of decent gangster films out that time this was something else it was a serious film as opposed to Snatch which was more comedic.
      Sexy Beast was good to.

Such an underrated film, crazy how little people have seen it to this day, I remember my uncle coming home with it when I was a kid, this and Chopper. And to this day they still 2 of my favourites.

Amen ^^ chopper and sexy beast also.
Another classic is dead man's shoes. Not so "gangster" but gritty. A real 10/10 film.

Gangster was sick inside and thought gaining power would make him happy. Just like Freddie Maze was.
Problem is there is no cure for what gangster has. He was miserable. In the end he couldn't handle the fact that Freddie was so much better than him. Freddie was happy after getting out of prison, without the need to have power or gain revenge against gangster.
If Freddie had of wanted revenge or wanted a fortune from Gangster as compensation, Gangster wouldn't have had to deal with the truth that Freddie was better than him.
Gangster cracked in the end of the film realising this and that gangster could never get what he wanted.
Why was Freddie better than Gangster? Freddie had what Gangster could never have. Freddie was able to feel love, to be loved and most importantly towards the end, only needed a peaceful life with the woman he loved to be happy. He didn't need power, or to be feared or to be rich. Gangster could never possess that humanity.
What Gangster had inside him (the twisted, depraved sickness) could never be cured.

    • @piercebrosnan9528

The line when freddie says at the end. "Who wants to be Freddie Maze anyway? I'm just an old man in a crap suit, I like it that way." Really destroyed Gangster's image of himself and ego since he wanted to be Freddie and styled his whole life on him. Gangster didn't have an identity of his own, just like how he doesn't have a name in the film, he is a wandering entity, a shapeshifter, in the end his lack of self and the realisation of it drives him mad.

@@piercebrosnan9528 I think what I said explains why Gangster got so worked up at Freddy when he refused to take revenge or accept money. Though what you said also applies. Really, when Freddie was happy with a peaceful life, that was a part of Freddy that Gangster could never become

FIVE STAR - Best UK gangster flick next to Jamie Fox & Jagger in 'Performance', watched this tonight again, superbly cast, directed, edited, scored, the whole lot. On-point genre art direction, a masterwork by Paul McGuigan and equally well shot by Peter Sova . . don't know what film stock / lenses used but actually looked like it was (very well) shot in the late 60s

The gangster was mentally ill. That obsession with Freddie....I think he wanted to BE Freddie. Not just the success, the character. As the woman whats-her-name said, he had something very ugly and ravenous inside him and was trying to fill it with success. But its not enough. Success, power, fear these are things all men want. But not ONLY those things. There are other requirements too. And because of his mental illness he couldnt have them. Hell he couldnt even understand what they were. All he knew was the other guy had something he didnt and that tore him apart but he lacked the mental ability to understand what that extra part he was missing was. As far as monsters go, he looked rather pitiful and sad in the end. He reminds me a bit of Johann from Monster the anime, only more realistic.

I was really hoping after Gangsters admissions trying to provoke Freddy that Freddy shows him the wire tap and Gangster gets arrested by police squad storming the flat and they swap places once again with Freddy and Karen inheriting the flat and life which Gangster wanted for himself.

    • @joshuaoneill3118

I always assumed he's just trying to elicit a response from Freddy. He took over the organization when he went to jail and made it bigger and more powerful than Freddy did. In that sense he was a better leader than Freddy (Though a much worse human being). When he tries to show off to him, Freddy isn't really interested. He's moved on in his life. It pisses off the Gangster so he tries to poke him and get something out of him. He tells the truth about everything being his fault and even gives Freddy a gun, hoping he'll get a response, from the one guy he idolized yet tried to crush in the grand scheme of things. When Freddy walks away it shows how shallow and single note The Gangsters life has been. It feels kind of similar to the ending of There Will Be Blood. All the money and power in the world with no enemies left, but where does it leave you?
Thats my interpretation anyway...but I haven't seen this movie in years. So I could be totally off the mark!

He wanted to prove Freddie was no better than he was, by Freddie refusing to go along and kill him he proved he was the better man all along, which destroyed Gangster's ego.
