He represents so many different kinds of evil. Violence, cruelty, callousness, manipulation and treachery with a smile on its face. But it's even scarier because he represents the banal, everyday evil that might be lurking just under the surface, waiting for a chance to come out.
Paul Bettany is perfect in this role. Terrifying even in the quiet moments when he's not torturing something to death. The boyish looks, smile and baby blue eyes are so cold and dead. It's not a perfect film, but he's perfect in it.
Notice *when* Karen finally does get nervous by the gangster. It's not when he's openly hostile. It's not when he's inches from her face, staring at her with his dead, sociopath eyes. It's when he backs down and apologizes. She can tell that she's won the battle, but that the gangster is determined to win the war.
This scene like so many in the movie where done so well only because of the way he carried off this character. Real scary men dont need to shout and be angry to scare you, In fact the scariest thing a real scary guy can say to you is "I'll see you later" with a wicked grin.
Boy that escalated quickly! I wish I could understand half of what they were saying without subtitles. Something about the accent and the particular slang/vernacular makes it hard for my Canadian english brain to process. Also, there's just something so hilariously british about the word, 'knickers.'
I'd type out a bit of dialogue for you but am not sure the bits you don't understand! I think understanding outside-North-American English is equivalent to doing Wordle. The more you listen to films outside the zone of familiarity, and the more.ire often you do Wordle, the more familiar it becomes. Over lockdown I watched a lot of American film noir and loved the 1950s style; also the channel Joseph's rare British crime drama. Some films plus excellent series & miniseries. No watching a lot of channel British B movies: brill. The accent in the British B films of 1940s & 1950s is upper class by way; and less jargon. Hope that helps
This depiction of Evil was so perfect. It was human and extra-ordinary. Covetous, capable, conscious, and directed. Highly intelligent in the worst of ways. The alpha of the worst of us. Absolutely terrifying in a real way. Jason Voohees is scary, but fiction. This man is real, and there are thousands of them out there.
The Guts of this hidden gem of this film is right there in this scene 1:37 where Saffron Burrows (The Bank Job) exposes Paul Bettany’s deep hatred in his eyes, which you switch after wiping his face and wishes her well before walking off. This level of hate in his eyes is present throughout his performance… I believe Paul Bettany was robbed of film scholarship/acknowledgment for this dark/evil film.
Alberto Mate this is late but he says “no he fucking didn’t, are you up the duff or something, can I hear the patter of tiny feet” both of those phrases mean “are you pregnant”.
Is that so? Then how come he said "I know something you don't know Freddie" in the car after interrogating Eddie, and then chopped Roland's head off so he wouldn't tell Freddie? You see, you are simply wrong.
@@True38 Maybe he was mulling it for awhile or changed his mind. Its clear he admired the man despite feeling supplanted by the new love interest. You are simply overconfident. (=
Paul bettany in this role...he is rising with power in the gangster world and Freddie is his boss. Paul bettany also wants her but she is with Freddie and they are having a baby together. Paul thinks Freddie is soft and wants to take over Freddie's life completely. He is basically a evil violent sociopath who wants the lot haha. Great film
The gangster (Bettany's character), see's love as a form of weakness and knows that Freddy getting married will mean the end of their violent escapades and threaten their rise to the top.
@@LEWISWATSONVLOGS1 Nope. Bettany's character wants Freddy, not Karen. He's insanely jealous of her getting Freddie's attention from the get go. Whether he wants Freddy sexually is debateable- he wants to be him, or is in love the idea of him, but it goes beyond simple criminal ambition.
I don't think he's gay, but he had a fixation on Freddie that's probably the closest he ever got to caring for another person. Of course, him being him, quickly turned into something vicious. But he kept being obsessed with Freddie for 30 years, there's that too.
Freddie and Karen truly loved each other. To the point where even after Freddie lost everything she still went to visit him and they're getting married after his 30 years sentence

True Paul. Very true

Yeah, it's like when Robert De Niro appeases Billy Batts and buys him a drink.
Yep, at 2:22. That's when she realizes that she's dealing with a special type of monster.

You have to wait till Hans Landa to find this kind of charm and menace in film.

She felt real good about herself until she realized she may have just spat in the face of Satan himself.

Good acting in this scene
He intended to warn Freddy and win back his admiration but Karen changed his mind for him. Way to go Karen!
man can i ask you to please tell me what the gangster says to her after she tells him about the engagement ? i cannot understand what he says.

Why did he get so angry as soon as she mentioned their engaged

Coppafiel' wasn't on the menu.
He's a repressed homosexual, hence all the... aggravation.

Tbh maybe. He even kept wearing the gold pin that Freddie gave him even 30 years later, the one with Freddie's initals.
