Paul Bettany Breaks Down His Most Iconic Characters | GQ
"It's hard to be that relentlessly charming the whole time." He says as he sits there, looking and talking like that.
Seriously..and Wimbledon is such an original owner take on that trope..it was refreshing to watch..I mean I was simultaneously angry and slightly turned on at the same time 😂 but great to watch tho
IKR
Man, Paul Bettany is such an underappreciated actor. I cannot think of anything he wasn't amazing in, and he's the total scene stealer every time for me.
True dat.
“We have to go”
*hands Mjölnir to Thor*
It's ok we all are supporting him
True. He is very precise, classy but simultaneously funny and absolutely badshit crazy. I would want to see him acting with Eddie Redmayne in something intense and dramatic
Just watched The DaVinci Code and he was amazing in it.
I just love how Paul sounds so earnest and real. He doesn't sound like some jaded actor who's only in it for the money, he sounds like he really cares and feels grateful for the opportunities he was given.
Exactly I felt that too
7:09 yea ok bud
@@tnemomhurb7679 he's making a joke dude
Nobody lasts long in the world of art if driven merely by money

His acting in Wandavision episode 5 was phenomenal
Edit: The season has ended. That was awesome
STOP LYING TO ME!
I adore him
FOR ONCE I CANT REMEMBER ANYTHING BEFORE WESTVIEW!
And Episode 2 was also very funny
@@furki_21 not rly
I’m glad he called out the whole “Heath Ledger committed suicide because of playing the Joker” nonsense. Sure that kind of stuff makes for cool campfire stories, but reducing real-life people to that level of fiction is just demeaning.
Especially since it goes against everything the people around him have said. People who were on the set of The Dark Knight said he just liked to talk about his kid and movies and what movies the other actors had been in.
Agreed
Its not the Dark Knight that kept the rumors going it’s the movie he was working on when he died. Overflowing with Masonic and Occult symbolism.. The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus..
He didn't commit suicide
@@ozziebrah Honestly, I think he just accidentally overdosed on drugs. Really that simple. It happens.
Paul Bettany 's career was kickstarted by a director's man crush
@harrison chidlow now it does
@@srilaxmi_donthineni not anymore
Ha
😂😂
@harrison chidlow Hello there
This guy could be a great villain for a bond movie
I'll get back to you on that one
Or a great bond!
Javier Rodriguez maybe
Afropalmen nooo a villain maybe bond not his type
Javier Rodriguez He basically did that in Solo. I would love to see that
Whoever told Paul Bettany his career was over is looking at Avengers, Solo and WandaVision swallowing his words. Last night’s episode of WandaVision besides that epic cameo my favorite scene was right before that when Wanda and Vision was arguing while floating and his acting abilities were definitely on display and it was awesome to see.
for real, if you contrast that episode to the age of Ultron, with Vision's birth, how calm and collected he was even when he flung himself towards Captain America. It really shows the capabilities of him as an actor, I was really taken aback by that argument scene. Very well done
4 episodes left, I think the best is yet to come for Wandavision.
@@Notaweebiswear Yeah, agreed.
Han Solo movie is super underrated
When everything seemed over.....a VISION was born
"I need the voice of a personalityless robot and I thought of you immediately".
Actually in the end Jarvis didn't sound personlityless. I always thought that he spoke in a slightly sarcastic or maybe condescending way to Tony Stark … which was great because that showed that Tony Stark actually made an AI device that was worth something.
@@Chris.starfleet 😆lol. But also in endgame we see the real Jarvis; the butler/driver of young Howard (and possibly tony) Stark.
@@Adronitis This is true, but Jarvis (the butler/driver) was first seen in Agent Carter.
*laughs in wandavision episode 5*
Like devoid of personality? JARVIS is the sassiest, most exasperated AI ever!
I still can't believe that he's 49, although he's 47 here, he basically doesn't age, it's amazing
I KNOW RIGHT
excuse!!
I thinks he ages, just very naturally into a very handsome and charming gentleman
He looks like he is 45 while he is 47 and he is 49 right now.
Unbelievable.
My heart hurt with his words for Ledger. There was something in his voice...
He could barely even speak about it 😢
WHO ELSE WAS CRYING
Twigryph I was holding back the tears
He sounded like he had been blindsided. Ten years later, those wounds are still fresh.
did anyone think it was a poor choice of words??
Paul Bettany steals every movie that he’s in. One of my top 5 favorite actors of all time.
Sharpe1502 except for marvel movies. Me and thousands other fans couldn't care less about his character and his death.
Yep, Knight’s Tale and Master and Commander solidify him as a very distracting co-star. You end up liking him the most.
100% agree. I will see movies just because he's in it.
100% agree
I will even happily watch both Priest and Legion simply because of him.
if they ever do a david bowie biopic, this guy has got to play him
Nerds in Shining Armour yes!!
Nerds in Shining Armour oh god yes! Even better, Paul’s wife is Jennifer Connelly who played Sarah in Labyrinth.
Oh My..... ;)
Nerds in Shining Armour oh my god. Absolutely he should. 👯♀️👯♀️ brilliant.
I would watch that, even if it does follow the late great David Bowie in his time as a singer/actor!!!🤩
That’s crazy how the MCU literally saved/rejuvenated his career, amazing talent
Seems to have done that for a lot of people
And rdj

"He wanted to see something of me in a movie where I wasn't playing a psychopath."

A high-functioning sociopath, mind you ;)
@@RosimInc7 oh, I love you so much right now
You mean like when he played Ted Kaczynski?
@@Callie_Castle that was my favourite performance of his, shame they didn't mention it
He might have a stylist or something, but he totally knows what looks good on him. Yellow lenses, gold jewelry, yellow top, beige/khaki jacket, tortoiseshell buttons. Gosh 😮😍
Caitlin Martinez his style is a bit like downey jr
The yellow lenses are for his dyslexia. : )
Yes, his warm complexion
William Guard they are more likely for Meares-Irlen syndrome which is when someone has a problem processing visual information whereas Dyslexia is difficulty processing language.
I died when I noticed the white on the edge of sleeve!! Frikkin fabulous ....was lost in his voice and I was too busy staring at his cutie pie face lol and how good his shades look on him hehheeh I want those glasses look so sleek
I just want someone to love me the way ron howard loves paul bettany.
Real facts!
He barely talks about his characters. He just gives compliments to the people he worked with and people he admires. Seems like a nice guy.
Nothing nice said about Russell Crowe despite being in 2 films with him 👀
@@charmax88 I've seen some pretty dodgy stuff online involving Russel Crowe, Paul and Jennifer 😳
@@alicemaisie8846 I've heard, and this could all just be over dramatics, but I did hear that Crowe tends to be very dismissive of any female in the films he's in IF they're not a main character.
They forgot about Legion. Very underrated in this one. He gave Michael such ferocity and compassion. A conflicted angel with a solid gold heart
That was him! That movie is something else
@@Deeeaah same thoughts. I was like 😲
Just watched it yesterday for probably the tenth time. Love hm in the movie ❤️ 😇
Legion and Priest 😤
I felt in love with him in that movie I remember his acting being SOOO good
He really gave us some gems of behind the scenes for these movies. Love movie history of how they are made
Thank you, Ron Howard, for always having Paul Bettany's back. He's always my favorite part in whatever he's in - and I don't actively seek it out. He's just THAT good.
Aww him talking about Heath is so heartbreaking
I’ve found him attractive for like 10 years now eryones finally getting on the same wavelength
I found him extremely attractive in A Knight's Tale.
he is a vision

Wooo. dat pasty white booty in Da Vinci Code was it for me
Yasss!
I want to kiss the guy who forced the producers to let him play Geoffrey Chaucer in a Knight's Tale. This character rocked my entire childhood haha
Helgeland was the director, so he's also responsible for the whole rest of the movie, so I'm doubly grateful to him!

"It's hard to be charming all the time."
Could've fooled me, Paul
Paul Bettany adds a uniqueness to any role he has. He always stands out and shines above even the main actors in a supporting role. His career should never be over.
What a beautiful career this guy has had, goes to show how important it is to have great connections.
its not what you know, its who you know
Old fashioned, those days are gone. It's what you know and who you know. You can't have one without the other.
"Great Connections" is just code for being Good with People.
So be nice and Smile More.
Also how you treat who you know.
Dude it's who you know 90% in the working world to get your foot in the door and skip ahead in a long line of others who also want the job. When it comes to actually doing the job obviously it's what you know 100% but the who is the one that gets you the opportunity to show the what.
People don’t talk about Dryden Vos enough. He was such a cool character in Solo and Paul played him beautifully.
one of those deliciously evil villains you just can't help but enjoy
Yep, Solo gets a bad rap because it's dragged down by The Last Jedi. I loved it and Paul Bettany was marvelous in it.
His monologues in a knights tale are brilliantly delivered
WE WALK IN THE VALLEY OF HIS TURBULENCEEE!!!
I really just clicked on this to make sure A Knight's Tale was featured heavily. I love almost everything about that movie but Chaucer might stand out the most.
I appreciate you for saying what I was thinking.
@@antourte1 @@antourte1 it's a close tie for me between Bettany and "Show us a dance of Gelderland"
The whole soundtrack for that movie is a meme and I love it dearly
I just adore Paul Bettany. Love how his awkward seemingly shy natural personality tends to come through even in his most confident of roles. He's so fun and his voice is magnetic, excellent choice for Jarvis.

Note taken:
- Be friends with Ron Howard
the way he talked about heath is heart breaking
"He was just so alive". The tense is very important there
Funny how Marvel cast Paul's wife to play Peter Parker's Suit AI voice
maybe one day we'll see her in a marvel movie
She is so beautiful
It was Paul that suggested it to Jennifer.
@@A.French yeah I suppose, but it's not up to the actor the decision.
@@FabioRaitz Of course, but I guess he had connections.
I didn’t even realize most of these characters were him
Yeah, all those earlier films -- I've seen them but I never put 2+2 together. He's great.
Mark of a great actor, you remember the character, not the actor playing him.
It gets really distracting in parts of Wandavision because he reminds me way too much of A Knight's Tale in certain parts.
yeah a knight's tale is probably the most important movie to me
and i never even realised
Same.
He’s so humble and self deprecating, he’s so incredibly grateful to the people who gave him chances but he should be proud because funnily enough it’s as an android that he’s had his most wide ranging role. He’s perfect as vision.
Most underrated actor, EVER!!!
Eidia Nabi he’s up there but I’d rate Toby Kebnell higher.
Like ever ever.
finally someone who understands!!!
Man... I've always loved him, I'm an OG fan. He's charming without even trying!
Him and Oded Fehr.
He is an underrated actor indeed. He's pretty good and now he got his own TVShow along with Lizzie Olsen. He seems really down to earth, as if he is aware he is an actor but not a celebrity. Love the way they gave an entire personality to Vision, lovely and funny.
Hope to see him in another projects beyond Marvel
You literally can still hear the grief in his voice when talking about Heath Ledger.
Imagine if we could have gotten one of these with Heath Ledger breaking down his most iconic characters... hearing him talk about the Joker would be amazing in particular!
When he said that "he was so alive" thing about Ledger I honestly get it. My grandma was the same way. I honestly cannot fathom how she is gone, and yet with my dad I understand his death. Some people just have so much life and love inside of them, it's so crazy to think that they could ever die.
Tim Burton / Johnny Depp
Christopher Nolan / Christian Bale/Michael Caine
Steven Spielberg / Tom Hanks
Wes Anderson / Jason Schwartzman/Bill Murray
Ron Howard / Paul Bettany
These are the example of finest director/ actor combi.
Deen Said Tarantino/ Sam Jackson
George Lucas / Harrison Ford…well back in the '70s and '80s
except that Howard sucks lol
R. Scott/ DiCaprio
Christopher Nolan / Tom Hardy
A Knight's Tale - one of my favorite movies. Bettany's role was hilarious.
Julie Harden ITS CALLED A LANCE. HELOOOOOO
Best line of the whole movie!
"You have been weighed. You have been measured. And you have absolutely been found wanting."
Agreed
Although I agree that he was fantastic in A Knights Tale, I believe that he was better in Master And Commander. The character was great, he delivered it perfectly and the chemistry between him and Crowe was awesome.
He seems/sounds/looks 'traumatized' by how many times he thought 'yep my career's over now'... He is a BRILLIANT actor and I love him in WandaVision
Listening to him speak about his roles makes me very happy. He is such an underrated actor and is great. He is a humble and true class act that should remind us all to be better people. His acting just continues to get better and better. In WandaVision his acting alongside Elizabeth Olsen has been incredible to watch so far. I am very interested in his future as an actor.

Paul Bettany is simply amazing. I've never watched a movie with him in it that I didn't love. His role as Chaucer in a Knight's Tale is still one of my favorites and is what makes that movie so easy to re-watch. Thanks for sharing your talent, Paul.
Paul Bettany: Maybe my career *is* over
Joss Whedon: WAIT JUST A SECOND
More like Jon Favreau
@@jacobmcmillan6787 oh I said Joss Whedon because he is the one who suggested Bettany to play Vision, not Favreau
Ironically, now Joss might be saying that. :\
Throughout Paul Bettany’s career, he took every opportunity, got to live his dream in a starwars movie and worked with legends then became one himself
Babyyyyyy his role in Wimbledon jump-started my puberty.
He was so hot in that movie
Oh word? Maybe I should check it out. I cannot tolerate Kirsten Dunst, but maybe he'll make it worthwhile.
@@ASparkleross I also can't tolerate her but he is worth it. Trust.
Brutally hot 🔥
I remember Paul standing out in A Knight's Tale. I'm glad to see his continued success.
Often he was the best part of his movies. But I cannot think about more iconic shot than Priest with his armour and archangel Michael in Legion.
dug tass ...you are a genre lover!!👍👍👍
I was wondering why it wasn't included. I loved this movie
Priest was actually the movie that made me notice Paul Bettany eventhough I've seen him before. Fun movie.
genre movies get pooped on ALL the time in the media and by critics...sadly even actors in these movies.
Actually Paul said in one of his interview that he enjoyed making them, doing action and stunts.
It would be great to see him more in those type of movies.
People often see him as John Constantine. I think it's a great idea.
"Hey Ron, have you ever spent long Wintery evenings wondering why you're not in the Star Wars franchise? Because have."

Enter Solo, which was a great movie that didn't get enough love considering Paul performance in that was amazing. Dude can act
@@surfingnerd621 Yeah it's obscene that idiots retaliated to TLJ by boycotting the first actual good Disney Star Wars film. It was freaking amazing damnit and now because it bombed at the box office we won't get more like it.
Zach Cooper rogue one was pretty good as well
A Knight’s Tale was the movie that introduced me to Paul Bettany the actor. He and Alan Tudyk were brilliant! They were two of the best parts of the movie.👍
Wimbledon was a lovely movie. Paul and James McAvoy were funny as brothers 😂
Sorry but your wrong Mark Addy is the best bit.
Let's be honest, everyone in A Knight's Tale was spot on, even the women. Perfect casting for what the movie was.
Paul Bettany's performance as Stephen in Master and Commander is one of the things that makes that film truly exceptional, hope this guy keeps working.
"It's not what you know, it's who you know: A short documentary"

They forgot Legion and Priest, both of his character there are so underrated. :(
Thank you, I was hoping Priest would be mentioned!
And unabomber
Very nice to see an actor who appreciates the opportunities he has been given (and continues to deliver stellar performances).
My first Paul Bettany film was his role as Dustfinger in "Inkheart". I loved the book, enjoyed the movie (despite not leaving room for a sequel), and his portrayal of the fire-eater was truly one of the highlights.
I love this man. He is so interesting and charming. Also hot
take it easy scarlet witch
All of these films are fantastic and, though I know it's not regarded as one of his most prominent roles, I will always love his portrayal of Dustfinger in the Inkheart film.
Thank You! I tried to remember another role of his that I like and that's Dustfinger. Man I love him in that movie
YASS I was looking for this comment, Ink Heart was my life in middle school
I also was scrolling though the comments hoping someone would mention Inkheart! One of my favourite book series and loved him in the movie! I also love that his wife in real like plays his wife Roxanne in the movie ❤️
I love his portrayal of Dustfinger! He was so perfect, exactly how I imagined him in the books!
Absolutely. He made that movie worth watching. He’s fabulous in everything he does. ❤️❤️❤️
Which surprises me when he said acting in Wimbledon was so exhausting having to be so charming all the time. I can’t imagine . . . he made it look so natural, like he wasn’t acting at all! I never would’ve guessed that was so hard for him! 😂
I just adore this man
“Margin Call” should have been on this list. His performance was stellar!
A very underrated performance, and a very underappreciated movie!
One of the best movies ever made and superbly acted.
His comments on Heath was very heart-warming and sad at the same time. Truely people are affected by this loss even to this day.
He was seriously the best character to watch on screen in Solo
Bettany is an incredible actor and one of the most underrated actors.
him explaining himself being a child watching star wars and wishing he could be a part of it and FORTY years later it becomes reality.. i cant. movies are magic.
Paul Bettany is great guy.
But his Knights Tale character was epic and his best
I love how he matches his outfit with his glasses

Vos is Snoke, just think about it
Triple G Yes
Yes! I felt pretty meh about Solo but he really stood out with a great performance that made him a credible threat.
He speaks with real love when he talks about Ledger. The emotions really spill into his words
Best line in WandaVision - "You don't get to make that decision FOR me, Wanda!" Purely due to delivery. Paul Bettany is the man.
I'm so glad Wimbledon is on this because he might find it awkward, but I loathe watching most rom coms and Wimbledon remains one of my favorite rewatches
Ninkira yes! it’s such a lovely movie.
I've watched it so many times and yet I still get excited about the end and will he win or not!! It's a great film :)
I find it funny that he says it was hard to be so relentlessly charming because that is indeed what makes that character a total panty-dropper
I love Paul so much, he’s the most pure cinnamon roll

I cried a little to his tribute for Heath
His acting in Wandavision is phenomenal
Really like his character in "Inkheart" and "Legion ".
I've never watched Vision, but man, Dustfinger really stole my heart when I was about 13
He was fantastic playing Ted Kaczynski in Manhunt:Unibomber
I was hoping to see him talk about it, because it's awesome miniseries
I was going to say the same

Interesting that Bettany has remained with some of the same directors/actors throughout his career like Ron Howard and Jon Favreau.
Paul Bettany is such a nice guy he sounds like a down to earth type of guy
Which Hollywood producer said his career was over?! I just want to talk...
Probably a vile pos ... maybe Harvey Weinstein?
Paul Bettany is a phenomenal actor! Keep it up. I will forever be your fan. I love how you portray The Vision, wise yet childlike innocence. He was only born recently yet has a strong sense of loyalty and morality. Keep it up!
If I see this guy one day I'm gonna yell "SIR UUULRIIICH VON LIECHTENSTEIIIIIIN"

He actually got himself a laryngitis because of that role.
He should have spent a year in Greece in silence instead to better understand the sound.... of a whisper

I adore Knights Tale !!! Miss Heath too!!
Easily one of the greatest actors working today... and definitely on the short list for most underrated. PUT THIS DUDE IN MORE MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He one of those actors who so encompasses the characters, you tend to forget how many great movies he's been in.
i like how he says it's hard to be relentlessly charming. He is basically charm personified.
Edit: I can't believe how many movies of his I've seen without realizing it was him.
One of the most underrated actors ever! Paul is fantastic in every movie and show he’s in :)
He's such a wonderful actor and person, he deserves all the love 💕
I love Paul Bettany! I actually wish Priest had done well enough for sequels because I loved him in that role too.
Right tho💯💯
The lack of the "Grant" name aside, Paul Bettany is charming, talented and yet so real. Wonder who that producer was, the one without (PUN ALERT) any vision.
"A knight's tale!" is one of those weird movies in which pretty much every character is so well done that a lot of the cast gets noticed, after watching it I realized I didn't knew half the cast and I learned their names and keep following their careers. It's a simple movie but its characters are iconic.
His voice is amazing.... he could read the tax papers aloud and it would be pleasant to listen to.
Legion is my favorite movie. He was perfect for the role of Michael.
What he says about in-person auditions is true for regular jobs, too: if I get an interview, I get the job because I can turn on the charm when I need to.
He's such a likeable, brilliant actor. Even as Jarvis he stood out
The man is so humble just like Randall Park. Only actors ever would be worth meeting.
‘and they gave me money which is always nice of people’😂😂😭
They gave me a bag of money, lol.
