    Hi dear Becky ! When you post a video, I brew a mug of tea or coffee and sit on my favourite armchair and just immerse myself in your drawing ! I wish I live close enough to you so we may become friends and go on sketching trips together and maybe I become more brave with drawing in public ! Thank you ever so much for these little intimate moments watching you paint while you explain as you go along ! An experience I treasure every time ! Wishing you a very Happy Easter and hope to see you soon ! Warmest regards... Lorraine 🐰🐣🎨🌷

    I like the way you jump right in, but I also like the floating breakfast; coffee and cake in front of the scene. I think it’s your invention.

    Wonderful lesson on perspective and keeping loose! I am also right-handed, and "starting from the left" is such incredibly useful advice to me. I have taken many drawing lessons in my life, from some very talented artists, but so many of them were left-handed and had a very difficult time explaining their process to their right-handed students. I also love the fact that you point out the importance of taking the time to visualize the placement of the finished image before putting pen to paper. I used to do calligraphy, and I reached a point where I was very good at visualizing where to start each line of text and where it would end, but I'm still working on translating that ability to drawing. Learning to see things as shapes without attaching names -- car, house, tree, etc. -- to them is SO vital. Thank you once again for sharing your talents, both as an artist and a teacher, with us!

    Thanks so much for this. I realise that I’ve not been “summarising “ what I see. I will now, as I was making this very difficult when it might be easier!

    It’s insane how relaxed, confident and quickly you draw the rooftops 👏🤩 I get dizzy only looking at them 🥴 😂 Sketching this rooftops at my pace would mean sketching for at least 3 hours 😀 Pencil miles is what we need, right?☺️ Thank you for sharing and happy easter 🐣

      Thank you so much, Nadja! 😀 I just look at their exterior outlines, not the inner details, so I don't get dizzy 😄 I always focus on the largest shapes and "cheat" with the details by using quick lines to summarize the textures.

    Love watching your free drawing of all the scenes of every day life. Your videos have helped me to relax this past week, when I was in hospital after a sudden illness and now at home, recovering. I like the fact that your are putting out videos practically every day and I always look forward to them. Thank you!

    I would love to have a sketch book from you that included various stages of a few drawings, starting with the lines, then lines covering the page, then colors, etc. Bear in mind that I am a self-learning beginner! I know it sounds silly to artists, but it would be helpful (and fun) for someone like me.
    An eBook (PDF) of this would be excellent. I can print it at home. No need to get it printed.

    Thanks Becky for your time and work.
    We are mid Autumn now in Sydney. Cooler weather, lots of rain.
    My favourite time of year is Hanami, in Spring, and I also like to go to our hilly areas, the Blue Mountains are very blue from the oil of the distant Eucalyptus leaves, and for the leaves turning the Autumn colours....

    I love your work, Becky! It is always inspiring to watch your sketching and colouring. Recently I noticed in my own work, that I find it difficult to paint white parts of a scene. Normally I would try to paint them with a very light hint of greyish or bluish tone as groundlayer, because just leaving them white looks so unfinished. But most of the time I can't reach the right balance and the highlights are dissepearing. Maybe there is a tipp against this, you could give?

    • @BeckyCao
      @BeckyCao  2 года назад

      Thank you so much, Britta! Your technique is good for oil or acrylic paintings; but for watercolors, because the medium is so transparent, you can see through the layers that you paint, it may not be a good idea to make the ground layer grey or blue. For me, I often lay a yellowish tone for the ground layer to establish warm daylight or indoor lighting. When I lay this tone, I’m also leaving areas white that suggest highlight. So overall, it’s always a better idea to start layering lightly with a warm tone first, and leave areas of paper white. Then add the mid tones, and shade colors.

      @@BeckyCao 🥰 Thank you for that answer! This is very interesting. I am watching tutorials with oil and acrylic too. Maybe I am mixing too much knowledge for too different mediums in my head without realising it?

    Are you using the same water brush for all colors?

    • @BeckyCao
      @BeckyCao  2 года назад +1

      I have two water brushes, one with a larger tip, the other smaller one for finer details. Every time I switch color, I clean the tip on the towel before grabbing a new color, so I don't need many brushes.

    You mention 'pink purple' often. What colour is that?

    • @BeckyCao
      @BeckyCao  2 года назад

      Well, it's very much "royal purple" as named by brands such as Daniel Smith and Winsor& Newton. You can use any color that's similar to it.
