A new chicken lady here. Never done this before. I took my great nieces and nephews to pick out a chicken. Ages 2-16. They were excited. We bought a 10x10 shed and putting that up now. So we went for 6 chicks, one a piece. Came home with 10! I am really hoping there's no rooster. So I thought I'd share my new adventure. I too am putting curtains up and decorating. inside. Wish me luck i'll take any advice you want to give.

Hello! Chicken owner of 2 years here :) I reccomend for you and the kids to spend time with the chicks because they become more tame, and are very unlikely to become mean. For the same reason, incase there is a roo, they will be less agressive. I have a roo and he is a total sweetheart :)

    New. Chicken lady here.
My son bought me 10 chicks to care for now that i am disabled.
To help with my rehab, dort of. 😉
My lungs have been damaged. So i usually have about 4 - 5 good hours in each day.
I wish i had found this video before we moved the chickens outside to their run. I would have waited a few things done more like this.
    Beautiful coop & run!

Love it… I mirrored my run and barn after you! Thanks for sharing your experience with us! I just introduced my flock to a “fenced tree covered run” and they LOVE it and I love that it’s safer for them too… although, I still am outside with them when they’re out.

My husband built our co-op based off of Ana whites greenhouse plans (made it smaller like a square vs a rectangle) and he had 2x4s up at the top not thinking the birds would roost up there and sure enough it’s their favorite spot. We made these really fun branches for roots and they preferred the 2x4s. I always tell people they will tell you what they like haha. It’s also really funny how different chicken flocks can be. Our originals OGs were so much cleaner and chill compared to our new chicks on the block 😆 I just got some first Saturday lime. We have sandy soil so it works out great that we never had to haul anything in but I’m eager to see if this helps even more. I usually keep straw at the bottom and then use all that for my garden over time. Will look into the hemp more. Thanks for sharing. It was a great visual to see how I can use more of my spaces.

On our poop shelf I use PDZ Horse Stall Refresher. I use it much like kitty litter. Use a kitty scoop from the Dollar Tree to remove the poop. And PDZ is compostable. You might wish to try it. Best wishes.

I love what you are doing! I would recommend relocating the Elderberry. According to PoultryDVM: Caution - Potential Toxicity: Elderberry leaves, stems, roots and immature fruit are capable of producing large amounts of cyanide (a deadly toxin). Also, chickens should not be given large quantities of the berries to snack on either-as even when mature, S. I would look more into it of course but just something to consider. Thank you so much for sharing!

Your chicken coop tour has honestly been on of the best videos I’ve seen so far!!
Question for you, why not put sand inside the shed under the roosting area? You can still use a shovel to pick up the chicken poop. Do you avoid the sand because the sand might produce a lot of dust? Thanks for any insight! 👍🏼👍🏼

I really appreciate this tour, as I am in the middle of building my own 8x8 coop. I follow you on IG as well and have learned so much - it makes me feel better as we prepare to get our chicks this September. I think I would like to add a shelf under the roosting bar as well. If you have two roosting bars, and recommend the back one be at least 16 inches from the wall, how far apart should you space the front one from the back one - another 16 inches? I am just trying to figure out how deep I should make the shelf.
